Chartered in 1763, Sandwich was named in honor of John Montagu, fourth earl of Sandwich. The land was considered so inaccessible that the grant was enlarged, making Sandwich one of the largest towns in the province of New Hampshire.
The first settlers arrived in 1767. By 1830, Sandwich was a bustling town with farms, mills, stores, traders, schools and churches, small local industries, carpenters, artisans, blacksmiths, wheelwrights - and a population of over 2700 people.
Though many later moved west and to the cities, by the end of the 19th century Sandwich’s rural beauty was attracting artists, visitors and summer folk, an attraction which continues to this day. A visit to Sandwich is a visit to the best of the past reflected in the best of the present.
