Sandwich Craftsmen’s Christmas in the Village Festival The 32nd annual Sandwich Craftsmen’s Christmas in the Village Festival is this weekend, December 5 and 6. At the Sandwich Central School, Sandwich Fire Station, Sandwich Historical Society, and many other locations around Sandwich, crafters and business people have been busy and you will be able to buy all sorts of locally made Christmas, holiday and household items for everyone on your list. The “official” festival locations will be open Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.- special events and other locations may be open some different hours (read on for details). This is a great weekend to visit with various craftspeople in town, many of them in their workshops; and it’s also a fun way to visit with friends, have a stroll around town, have lunch, visit with Santa… Detailed maps will be available at each location and all around town. Each one of the “official” Sandwich Craftsmen’s locations will be marked by a giant red Christmas stocking with a number on it.
John Knight and his team of Percheron horses of True Farm in Holderness has been hired by the crafters and businessmen in town to escort you in old fashioned style from location to location in Center Sandwich Village during the day on Saturday from 10-3. They might also be around town on Sunday. He and his team will have some designated pick-up and drop off locations which will be detailed in a brochure at each stop.
In addition to the crafts locations, you can enjoy some special events like: A gingerbread house contest with a theme of “Christmas Around the World” at Mocha Rizing; Breakfast with Santa at the Corner House Inn Saturday 12/5 from 8:30 until 10:00 a.m.; Soup and Chowder Lunch and crafts with the Ladies Aid at the Federated Church Saturday; Tour the Christmas exhibit at the Sandwich Historical Society Saturday and Sunday; Horse-drawn carriage rides on Saturday; Tree lighting & caroling on the Green at 4:30 pm. Saturday.
Sunday morning at 10 attend church in the Methodist Meeting of the Federated Church of Sandwich and be inspired by the Advent message given by Rev. David Morgan. Shop for a bit, have brunch at the Corner House or a light lunch at the school or firehouse, have a cup of coffee and listen to music at Mocha Rizing, shop again. Movies and games with the Sandwich Recreation Department will be Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 12noon in the Rec Building so that parents can shop independently—please call Nancy Morton at 284-6473 by noon Saturday for information and to sign-up. Come out and join in the fun; do some holiday shopping and support your local craftsmen & women!
The Sandwich Central School will be the largest festival location where more than a dozen craftspeople and community organizations will be selling items. Around mid-day Saturday, Santa will make a visit to read a book, give out candy canes, and listen to lists. The Sandwich PTO will be selling new and used books, gifts, school items and baked goods, soups, and more. Club Sandwich 4-H members will be selling crafts they have made. Charleen O’Coin and Greg Hausch will be at the school with their beautiful stained glass and pressed flowers in glass. Pam Urda has been busy making dried wreaths, kissing balls, and center pieces from natural materials. Ellen Lemburg, owner of Starlight Gems, handcrafts delightful stone (precious and semi-precious) and pearl jewelry. Tom and Lisa Merriman of the Sandwich Creamery will be selling cheese and taking orders for gift boxes to be shipped. JoAnna Scofield will have her High Fire Wheel Thrown Pottery and stoneware for sale. Janet Reidy, owner of Danet Creations, has delightful dress scarves, and beaded hats. She has also designed some Sandwich Scene T-shirts that depict the Potholes and Bearcamp Pond; this year she has the shirts in long sleeve and a few colors.
Other people at the school include: Gina Lund who makes and sells handmade chocolates. Valerie Veld is a Longaberger Basket dealer; she sells these high quality hand-made baskets and makes special gift arrangements. Barbara Kohls has been making her Grandma’s Best Peanut Brittle as fast as she can. She festively packages it in ½ and ¼ pound containers; it goes quickly so get yours on Saturday. Fresh Honduran Salsa is a specialty of Cecelia Lawton; she’ll have plenty for your holiday table and gift giving
New at the school this year is Ben Adriance, a cabinet maker from North Sandwich. Many know him for his fine wood-working and his Adrilly Gates. This year in addtion to small wood items, he is making clothes drying racks from an Old English pattern and patented hardware. The racks hang from the ceiling and can be raised and lowered as needed.
Robin Cornwell, an art teacher in Wolfeboro, will be selling embellishments at the school. She has been an artist from an early age, often taking inspiration from the patterns and forms in nature. Printing her on stencils on fabric back in the 80's has evolved into work with recycled fabrics, hand-dyed fabrics and more work with printmaking. A chance invite to a wool dyeing workshop has recently hooked her on wool. Nature, recycling, pattern and color have become the basics of her work. Her wall hangings combine fun fabrics, great color and embellishments of felted wool, beads and vintage linens. Wool vests and mittens carry on the colorful theme with tie-dyed wools intermixed with solid color pieces.
Surroundings Art Gallery and Willow Pond Antiques on Main Street will be open and is listed as the second stop on the Sandwich Christmas in the Village Map. Surroundings sells traditional New Hampshire Landscapes, still lifes, florals, barrel staves, painted boxes, carved figures, and much more. Jane Brown at Willow Pond sells a whimsical and eclectic variety of antiques, accessories and local crafts. Don Sutton has made arrangements with some of the artists at Surroundings Art Gallery to offering their older but still high quality paintings at greatly reduced prices (30-50% off) between now and Christmas. Between these and their current paintings, you may just find the perfect gift for yourself or somebody else for Christmas. Come check them out or call the Gallery at 284-6888 for more information. Surroundings is open on Saturday (10-5) and Sunday (12-5) or by appointment on other days between now and Christmas. Both shops will have hours through Christmas.
The Sandwich Historical Society is stop number 3. The Museum is festively decorated and the shop open during Christmas in the Village. Vendors will set up in the exhibit room and they include: the Bearcamp Valley Garden Club (BCVGC), Amaryllis (top size bulbs growing for 6 weeks and ready to bloom with 4 buds), paper whites (also potted 6 weeks ago in decorative containers), loose bulbs, and tickets for the BCVGC Holiday House Tour, December 13; Anne-Marie Selinger, Blue Ribbon Swedish Apple Pies; Gil Rodgers, wood carvings; Karen Benoit, handmade baskets and wool from her sheep.
Mocha Rizing and the Sandwich Artisan’s Guild are stop number four on the map. Nancy Papp sells fair trade gifts, teas, coffees, chocolates, gifts and goods. She is having a special sale of gifts from around the world during the month of December; the more you spend the more you save. The Sandwich Artisans Guild, located behind and underneath Mocha Rizing, is new this year and has the work of several local artists: John Ducsai, B&W photography; Angie Moore, local and wedding photography; Susan Lirakis, B&W photography and polar fleece hats; Maggie Porter, colorful knitting, weaving, and cashmere fibers; Peggy Merritt, handmade paper and prints; Jennifer Elliott, Lupine Blossoms knit hats and yarns; Jay Rancourt, hand-painted scarves and natural gourds; Jennifer Allen, botanical Lampshades; Sally Cornwell, pottery; Jonathan Walpole and Sally Cornwell, handmade chocolates.
In the window of Mocha Rizing you will be able to view the second annual gingerbread contest. This year’s theme is “Christmas Around the World”. A number of houses are on display. Don’t miss them. Judging and the awarding of prizes will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 6. Prior to the judging, enjoy live acoustic music from 11-1 at Mocha Rizing.
The Sandwich Central Fire Station is stop number 5 on the map and it is one of the major locations for crafters and a place to have a snack or light lunch. Cloudy Quinn will be making and serving hot soups and baked goods from the firehouse kitchen so delightful aromas should fill the air and cold hands and empty stomachs will find relief and sustenance. Sue Rowan, a Sandwich weaver, will have woven placemats and other hand-woven items. Linda Spear, of Madison, who has been teaching many in town to hook rugs will be doing a hooking demonstration and selling-rug hooking kits, supplies, and ornaments. Cathy Fife of Canterbury will be selling New Hampshire framed photos and cards; you may remember her from the Sandwich Farmer’s Market this summer. Lisa Remington and her husband will have sequenced, beaded and wood ornaments. Caroline Nesbitt Book, former Artistic Director of Advice to the Players, will be signing her new book. Bev Carpenter who has an alpaca farm in Holderness will be bringing hand-dyed and natural alpaca yarn and roving from her alpacas. She also makes alpaca teddy bears, hand knit and felted hats, mittens and socks, and sells colorful finger puppets for the kids. FYI, alpaca is hypoallergenic, extremely soft and twice as warm as wool because each fiber is semi hollow and therefore insulates.
Across from the firehouse is Soft Touch Farm and location number 6; this and the firehouse are one of the stops for the horse-drawn carriage. Diane Cook Johnson, owner of Soft Touch Farm (www.softtouchfarm.com), will be in her shop demonstrating the use of wool and natural fibers in needle-felting, a method of painting and sculpting with wool. Soft Touch Farm has a vast array of felting supplies and kits, books, gift certificates for classes, holiday plants, and other items. Soft Touch Farm is now selling the Janome 725 Felting Machine so stop for a demo. The shop is a small square building with a porch at 22 Wentworth Hill Road (Route 109 across from the Sandwich Fire Station). Until Christmas, the shop will be open when the Open flag is out, or by appointment (284-7168). For a real personal and fun gift, book a gift-making party, or give a gift of a class for friends and family before or after the holiday. Felting is a great winter blues reliever and a fun party activity. If the weather is nice, the angora rabbits will be out in front of the shop to visit with people who stop by.
Location number 7 on the map is Maplewood Farm which is at the corner of Little Pond and Vittum Hill Roads. It is the home of the Martels. Jennifer will have fresh eggs, and handmade items just right for Christmas giving. Valerie May who lives down the road a piece will have her Gourmet Dog Biscuits for sale. They are Sandwich dog approved.
Valerie also bakes sugar cookies for people and she whimsically decorates them for the season.
A bit further down Vittum Hill Road is location number 8 which is the home of Martha and Rudy Carlson –Range View Farm. They have local organic cranberries, balsam, partridge berry and boxwood wreaths, maple syrup, jams, jellies, and Christmas Trees.
Take a short jaunt on Route 25 and then Route 113 into North Sandwich. In North Sandwich Village you will find the Pease Gallery where Elizabeth Pease will have her workshop open and be selling her famous “Card Barn” screen printed cards, oil paintings, landscapes, and still lifes. This is stop number 11.
While in North Sandwich, make a stop in the North Sandwich Store and say hello to Mike Shattuck and Lois Carmody. They have lots of things like hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, and lots of convenience items. They also sell wine, local hard cider, Cabot cheese wheels, antiques and local crafts. They are open Monday through Saturday from 7-6 and Sundays from 8-5.
Make your way back into Center Sandwich Village and stop at the home of Patricia Carega on Route 113 just across from the Sandwich Police Station. This location number 9 on the map. During the summer, Patsy’s barn is set-up as the Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery. Though the barn gallery will be closed (it is not heated), Patricia Carega’s house will be filled with unique ideas for the holiday season and holiday budgets! As always painting, prints and etchings, sculpture, watercolors, collage, photography, jewelry, and objects and best of all…art to wear will be part of the weekend. Wholly Tara will be a special featured artist with fun, fabulous, fashions, skirts, pants, jackets, shirts, hats, and bags. Also for sale will be original and affordable “thoughts” for the season—as always eclectic and fun! For a sneak preview visit www.patricialaddcarega.com. Join Patricia at the gallery (284-7728) for Holiday Cheer from 9 to 4 on Saturday and 9 to 3 on Sunday. The gallery is located at 69 Maple Street (Route 113) in Center Sandwich.
Just before arriving at the Carega Galley, from North Sandwich, you will on the right have passed the Phelps home (#10 on the map). Heather and her family will have some crafts and family items as well as T-shirts, sweat shirts and fleece all embellished with resort areas you’ve all enjoyed or would like to. These are sales samples and are first quality and are very reasonably priced.
Above are the 11 “official” locations which will have stamps for door prizes. Visit 5, have your card stamped, and turn in your card with five stamps to one of the boxes at the official locations to be eligible for one of five door prizes offered by the Craftsmen and on display at the school. The boxes will be gathered and the drawing will be held on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in the Sandwich Central School; you do not need to be present to win. Each of the door prizes is valued at $25 or more.
All Craftsmen’s locations are marked with a Red Stocking in front and are on a special map. There are also lots of other places open; many are listed below; but there may be some pleasant surprises. Enjoy Sandwich’s friendly people and a festive weekend in Sandwich!
Anne Made and Hill Country Books AnneMade, Hill Country Books, & Friends at 25 Grove Street, Center Sandwich are not listed as an “official” location on the Craftsmen’s Map so they are not part of the door prize stamping. They are, however, one of the Saturday stops for the carriage rides and they are in the village so are an easy walk from the churches and the school. This will be their 26th annual Holiday Open House. They will be open Sat., Dec 5 from 10-5 & Sun, Dec. 6 from 10-5. .Sustainable Agriculture for Sandwich At the last SASS meeting, it was decided to go ahead and try to get a petition together for the upcoming town meeting to see if the town wants to establish an Agriculture Commission. Discussion weighed the pros and cons and came down heavily on the likely advantage such a commission might hold. When the petition is readied for signing the committee hopes you too will recognize its value and add your name to the list. Whatever it means to you, surely we all know like the folk songs say, "the times they are a-changing". Any questions or comments, please call Bob Wright 284-7708.
Food Bank and Baskets The Outreach Committee of the Sandwich Federated Church assembled and delivered Thanksgiving Baskets earlier this week. The boxes contained all the fixings for a Thanksgiving dinner. The need continues past Thanksgiving Day; people may donate non-perishable items or send checks (Federated Church of Sandwich, memo: Thanksgiving Baskets/Food Bank) to the church at PO Box 267, Center Sandwich, NH 03227. Money received is used to buy perishable items such as chickens, turkeys, and fresh vegetables. Donations may be left at either of the churches. A dedicated committee does frequent pickups and transports the food to the Community Food Bank in Tamworth at St. Andrews. So let's remember others when we do our grocery shopping.
For more information, please call Susan Davies at 284-7413 or Jennifer Wright at 998-9460. All donations, including coupons, are most appreciated. Donations can also be left with Jennifer Wright in the Sandwich Selectman’s Office.

Photovoltaics (Solar electric panels) How many watts or kilowatts do you have installed? 3. Solar hot water. Type and square footage of solar hot water panels. 4. Wind Generator. Rated output in watts. 5. Passive Solar Heating. What percentage(roughly) of your heating load is done by the sun? Your help would be much appreciated. Please sign your name if it isn't apparent from the email address
Community Woodshare Anyone that is in urgent need of assistance getting wood to heat their home should simply stop by the Town Hall and fill out a voucher. That person could then go to the stockpile and give the voucher to Marilyn, who would tell them where to get the wood from and how much to take. From experience, it seems that the most efficient and cost effective way to do Woodshare was simply to connect people in need of wood with those that had a little extra to spare. A third phone call to someone that had a way to transport it, sealed the deal. It was nice to have the option to utilize local businesses that deal in firewood. This was simply a phone call and a delivery address.
Incidentally, The Department of Energy and Planning in Concord recently called to ask about this program. Sandwich's example could possibly be used as a template for other towns in the state and with the help of GALA, our reach could go well beyond town borders.
If you would like to help continue this program by making a monetary donation, please send a check payable to GALA-WOODSHARE. If you would like to ensure that your donation goes to only Sandwich Residents please write "Sandwich" on the bottom of your check and the money will be put towards Sandwich townspeople only. Your Donation can be mailed to: Community Woodshare, P.O. Box 325, Sandwich, NH 03227
If you would like to be put on the list as a wood "recipient", "donor" or "transporter" please call 707-7316
If you have split wood and would like to donate it, please feel free to add to the stockpile at any time. If you have other questions about this program, please contact the Selectmen's Office at the Town Hall or call 707-7316. If you have new thoughts on how we can do better, (ie. energy audits, etc.) contact the Energy committee with those ideas. Thanks again, Sandwich.
Flu Vaccine Many people went to the Benz Center for the VNA Flu Clinic, only to find they ran short of vaccine. In the past, they've only done 40-45 people so all they were allotted was enough to inoculate 50 people. They started at 1:00 pm and before 1:30 pm they had run out. If you've been unable to get a flu shot and would like to be put on a waiting list, please call the VNA at 569-2729 and tell the receptionist. They will notify you when vaccine becomes available. This is for the seasonal flu vaccine and not H1N1 (Swine Flu.)
Community Food Center The CFC in Tamworth has been healthier than most Food Pantries in recent months, but the effects of the struggling economy are starting to hit home there, too. In addition to diced tomatoes, cake and frosting mixes, salsa, shampoo, toothpaste, and dishwasher detergent, we need the basics - canned fruit and vegetables, meat, and 'hearty' soups, among others.
