ACT Winter Film Series Arts Council of Tamworth is presenting a three-week three-film series. The films will be shown on Monday evenings at 7:00 at the Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth, and on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 at the Moultonborough Library. Completing the series on February 9 and 11, Brideshead Revisited—inspired by the best-selling Evelyn Waugh novel of the same name—is a riveting drama of love, power and betrayal, featuring stunning performances by Academy Award winner Emma Thompson (Best Actress, Howard’s End, 1992) and Matthew Goode (The Lookout). When the charming aristocrat Sebastian invites Charles Ryder to his family's estate, Charles becomes seduced by the opulent lifestyle of the Marchmain family and by Julia, Sebastian's sister. As Charles and Julia’s romance deepens, repercussions follow, and Charles discovers that at Brideshead, love, money and power come at a price. Brideshead Revisited, 133 minutes long, is rated PG-13. It's a spellbinding story you'll want to revisit again and again.
No set admission is charged; instead ACT suggests a donation of $3-4 per person, which helps the non-profit organization continue to offer eclectic and innovative films for public viewing. SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
I have noticed the days getting longer again. Perhaps, the spring-like temperatures combined with a full moon have helped contribute to this feeling of brighter days. Whatever the cause, I am glad to feel that we are coming out of winter and spring is on it’s way. Somehow all the doom and gloom in the economic news has made this winter seem like a time to more or less hibernate, get through day by day, and hope that spring will bring good things.
Sometime this week, I will make a trip to the greenhouses (Spider Web) where I work in the spring. I hear that they have a greenhouse full of daffodils and bulbs in bud and bloom. I will enjoy a walk in a lush warm sunny spring garden and I pick up a few choice pots to have for sale at Surroundings Gallery this weekend for Valentine’s Day.
As you know, Saturday, February 14 is Valentine’s Day. Some Sandwich businesses and crafters are working together to make the 13th and 14th special with things like couples massage, partner yoga, special menus, and thoughtful gifts made especially for Valentines.

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
The thawing and re-freezing activity of the last week or so have caused me to think of some of the unusual conversations we have in these parts. The network morning shows and many talk shows feature fashion segments and women who are giddy and excited about beautiful stilettos and fancy shoes and boots. These types of shoes are usually quite impracticable in these parts and women I know talk about things like smart wool socks, rubberized boots that keep your feet dry and warm, ice grippers and the merits of the ones with the wrapped wires versus those with steel teeth that can bite into shear ice.
For me a pair of mid-calf high neoprene boots, covered and sealed with rubber and then painted with flowers, have been great for tromping through several inch deep icy cold melt water. They even have handles that help them to get them on easily. Add a pair of thick smart wool socks and ice grippers with teeth that are lined up in many directions and I stay warm, dry and upright in almost any weather that comes this time of year. Last week as I made my way through puddles with ease, I could hear people comment on my footwear and how practical it is—I take it as a compliment.
When you go to the Sled Dog Races you too may want to have practical boots to keep your feet toasty as you enjoy the races and festivities. A pair of snow shoes might even be something good to add to your outfit. Stay warm!
FLOW For Love of Water A program titled: “ FLOW for the Love of Water “ will take place on Thursday February 19 at 7:00 p.m. Mocha Rizing ($5 suggested donation). With water drying up around the world, the film urges a call to arms before more of our most precious natural resource evaporates. 1 hr. 24 minutes. Please join the discussion following the movie; info.on Barnstead NH's Warrant Article 31 banning corporate water withdrawals. Questions/suggestions call Patty 284-6808.

Sandwich Sled Dog Race Bring the whole family to the Sandwich Sled Dog Race to be held in North Sandwich on Saturday, February 21.Come see this decades old tradition as mushers from all over New England race their teams around a 20 and 45 mile course through the scenic Sandwich and Wonalancet winter trail system. The start and finish area on Bennett Street in North Sandwich offers the perfect spot to view the entire race and see all the teams in their pre-race preparations. Witness also, the increasingly popular “skijorers” (cross country skier with dogs) as they race along side the other teams. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers are invited to bring their equipment and sample a portion of the local trail system.
The race is sponsored by the Sandwich Sidehillers Winter Trails Club, in conjunction with the Ossipee Valley Snowmobile Club, North Country Mushers, Yankee Siberian Husky Club and numerous local businesses.
Festivities begin with a family-style (and priced) pasta dinner sponsored by the Sandwich PTO at the Sandwich Central School on Friday, February 20 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Many of the mushers will be at the spaghetti supper, and a short meeting will be held afterwards for them to draw bib numbers and get information about the race course.
The 45-mile teams will start first at 9:00 a.m. and head northeast to Wonalancet, making a large portion of the run and passing through the checkpoint located in the scenic Wonalancet Intervale. The trail skirts along a large hayfield right along Rte. 113A and makes a perfect spot to view the teams in action from your car, with the Wonalancet Chapel and Sandwich Range of the White Mountains as a backdrop. There are also road crossings on Rte. 113A in North Sandwich, and the 45-mile teams make a loop into Sandwich and will turn back for the finish line on Mt. Israel Road in Center Sandwich. Road crossings are manned by volunteers to help the teams if necessary and to watch for traffic.
The 20-mile teams and skijorers will start around 10 am and will go to the Wonalancet Intervale checkpoint, which is approximately halfway for them, and then return to the finish line.
Food and drinks will be available at the ”Bennett St Café” located at the start and finish area. The menu will include coffee, hot chocolate and donuts for the early attendees and then burgers, hot dogs, warm chili or stew, snacks and drinks for lunch.
Programs will be available at the race and will include the names, hometowns and bib numbers of the mushers as well as a map of the race course. SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
The end of February brings a slower pace to Sandwich. The Sandwich Winter Carnival and Sled Dog Races took place earlier in the month. Both required a lot of planning and coordination to come off smoothly. School vacation week is here and families are either traveling to someplace nice or relaxing and enjoying each other up here. Even the roads cause us to slow a bit as frost heaves are popping up all over the place and we must anticipate them. Life is a bit like that at this time of year as we deal with snow as it comes, work on spring cleaning when we can, and finish up winter chores, projects, and books in anticipation of longer warmer days, green grass and gardens.
Sandwich Home Industries Annual Meeting The keynote presenter at the Sandwich Home Industries Annual Meeting on Thursday, February 26 will be Terry Moore, a renowned builder and designer of commission furniture. The meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Benz Center on Heard Road.

The gallery, in the center of Sandwich, will be opened in mid May and remain so seven days a week through mid October. The theme for the SHI this year is "getting back to basics"...the council is going to put its Education effort on steroids..with most of the board participating in one way or another. Maggie Porter may be heading up that effort if she has the time...and Linda Danielovich, Peg Ridgely, Blair Newcomb and Sue Davies all said they would pitch in, along with Robin Dustin and Peter Van Winkle doing press releases (how about that!!!)
Segments of the education program will include a full blown children's program in collaboration with the Sandwich Children's Center, and Adult program, also a major event on the green during Old Home Week...(I need to get to Nancy Morton to find out what we can and cannot do!!) and finally a whole new look at our basement and what it would take to completely renovate it so that it draws artists, craftspeople and students of all ages...
So, you can see big things are going on at the SHI...and I hope you'll come and find out more Thursday the 26th...at the Benz center.
