SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN
BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
The holidays are behind us and Sandwich is settling into the routine of winter. Those of us who do not have warmer places to which to travel learn to make the most of our home town and often learn something new in the process. There is always a lot to do here and winter can be such a bright and beautiful time. Many of activities encourage us to be out and enjoying the snow, ice, and nature. Many other activities encourage us to gather inside, enjoy some warm food and drink, relax, visit, and learn a bit more about our neighbors and community.
I always enjoy seeing the cross-country skiers on the Sandwich Fairgrounds. It often looks much like an animated Christmas card as people of all ages are out there enjoying the snow. In the morning, the skiers are more traditional and are often meeting up with each other and visiting. After school the skiers are younger and ski skating in their colorful spandex gear. The Inter-Lakes X-C Ski team often practices and races on the grounds.
If you go out on the fairgrounds, please remember to respect the groomed trails and not let dogs run on them and not to snowshoe on them as it ruins the tracks. There is plenty of room on the fairgrounds for everyone. As always clean up after your dog and keep them under control (leashed).
The Leonard Boyd Chapman Wild Bird Sanctuary welcomes you to ski and snowshoe on their property on Mount Israel Road. Dogs are welcome; but they should be leashed so they do not disturb the wildlife. Motorized vehicles are not allowed. The trails are open from dawn to dusk and trail maps are available.
The Sandwich Sidehillers maintain several miles of X-C ski and snowmobile trails throughout town. The North Sandwich Store has some maps and information.
Friends of the Library Social Fight cabin fever before it starts…come to the Friends of the Library Adult* Social, the perfect cure for those post-holiday feelings of isolation. We'll provide some great refreshments, a display of books on the theme: "Living Frugally, Living Green" that just might start a conversation or two, and free childcare downstairs with kid-friendly activities and snacks. So come and enjoy conversation with old friends, and perhaps meet some new ones. It's at the Samuel Wentworth Library, Sunday, January 11 from 5:30-7 p.m.. All Sandwich residents invited.*Only adults over 21 permitted upstairs as wine will be served.
Ladies Night Out All area women are invited to a Ladies Night Out at the Corner House Inn on Monday, January 12 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The cost will be $8 for a light buffet of flatbread pizza or soup, veggies and dip, beverage, and chocolate with tax and gratuity included will be served in the pub. Drop-ins are welcome; but Don Brown needs to know about how many people will be coming so please call Diane at 284-7168 by 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 11 if you plan to attend.
For the last couple of years, the Sandwich Woman’s Club has been planning to do a Sandwich welcome packet. At the ladies night out, ideas for such a packet will be discussed and some information will be gathered and a preliminary packet of information put together. Anyone who would like to give input is welcome to stop by.
Instructions and materials for making clown dolls for Sandwich newborns will also be available at the gathering on the 12th. Women who wish to help with the sewing may pick out a kit.
The Sandwich Woman’s Club is a civic organization that exists to do good in the community. The ladies meet four times per year at a local restaurant for lunch and a program. They also meet another four or five times for an informal ladies night out (second Monday evenings of January, February, April and November; and maybe a picnic in the summer). Funds are raised during an Old Home Week Raffle and Snack Bar. This money is used to give book and supply money to Sandwich Undergraduates (in 2008 15 students each received $150). It is also used to sponsor the Community Christmas Party (in 2008 more than 100 Sandwich children from birth through grade 3 received a gift bag from Santa).
Spaghetti Dinner The community is invited to a Spaghetti supper sponsored by members of the Club Sandwich 4-H Sewing Club. This dinner will be held on Saturday, January, 17 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sandwich Fire Station. Dinner will be spaghetti with meat or vegetarian sauce, salad, garlic rolls, beverage and brownies for dessert. The cost is $7 per person. Children 5 and under are $2.50. This is a fund-raiser for the sewing group to help them cover the cost of materials for field trips and community service projects.

The reviews begin at noon and run pretty much every other Monday for four sessions January 19, and February 2, 16, and March 2. Exhibit of Works of Henrieke I. Strecker German born artist and new Sandwich resident, Henrieke I. Strecker, brings her artistic vision to Holderness School’s Edwards Art Gallery January 8th for her first solo exhibition in the USA. While in Germany, she exhibited her photography extensively throughout Europe, and maintained an active artistic presence on the Internet. Ms. Strecker arrived in the USA in March of 2008 and has been settling into her studio and home in Center Sandwich ever since. Ms. Strecker has already become active in the arts community here, having been invited to exhibit her work in group shows at Chi Lin Gallery in Meredith, Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, and twice at Holderness School and Plymouth State University in Plymouth.
Ms. Strecker’s artistic range touches on, and embraces, many media, from printmaking and poetry, to painting, bookmaking, photography, and video. And she often crosses boundaries to joyfully use them in combination. At the core of her work is Strecker’s quest for both visual and graphic simplicity rooted in her natural surroundings. Her continuing black on white “snow poem series” stylistically reminds one of the terse minimalism and calligraphic form of sumi brushwork, or perhaps “visual haiku.”
And even when her paint application in her mixed media pieces is exuberant and expressive, the storied content of Strecker’s work remains quietly suggestive. Her evocative symbolism draws viewers closer, urging them to interpret and complete each narrative with their own life experiences, making the work more inter-active than most you encounter. Henrieke Strecker’s content is thus richly poetic, created with a sparseness of gesture.
Henrieke I. Strecker’s exhibition in the Edwards Art Gallery at Holderness School will begin on Thursday, January 8 with an opening reception for the artist from 6:30-8pm. The show will continue through March 3rd. For more details and directions, call Franz Nicolay at 603.779.5387. Gallery Hours are: M, T, Th, F, 9am - 5pm; W, Sa 9am - 12pm. Closed Sundays. Also closed February 15-17.

Sandwich Fire and Rescue Department
The Sandwich Fire Rescue Department wishes you all an exuberant and safe New Year! We have an excellent department of trained volunteers ready to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no matter what your emergency. Remember to dial 9-1-1 for all emergencies, big or small. Here is our Incident Report for the last month of the year.
The Sandwich Fire/Rescue Department responded to 7 Medical Emergencies, 1 Smoke in Building, 1 Carbon Monoxide poisoning, 1 Fire alarm Activation, 3 Motor Vehicle Accidents and 1 Tree on the wires - during the month of December, 2008. In addition, personnel also participated in Portable Pump Training and EMS Training for Patient Assessment.
All 3 Motor Vehicle Accidents occurred due to poor road conditions, so it is imperative that you drive according to the road conditions by taking a little extra time getting to your destination. So far this winter, we've had our fair share of icy conditions which makes for hazardous driving! Our roadways may be fine one minute, but then suddenly "freeze over" another minute, so be careful!!

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN
BY DIANE JOHNSON
Sunday night as I was writing this column, I took a break about midnight with my rough coat collie, Duke-at his request. The moon was quite full and the light was absolutely magical! Everyone should go out on a quiet winter night when the moon is bright and just stand in awe and appreciation. With Sunday’s fresh powdery snow still clinging to the trees, the silhouettes and shadows were dramatic in the moonlight. The snow just sparkled! Mesmerized by the beauty and peace, I wanted to share it. I almost woke my husband up to encourage him to go for a snowshoe. Then I came back to my senses and I realized that he (or any friend I could think to call) wouldn’t wake from a warm sound sleep and see the magic in the same way I did. We have much winter still ahead of us and many quiet sparkly nights to come. Take a little time to enjoy them!

In 2009, the Sandwich Business Group has set a number of membership goals that will help Sandwich businesses and the community. The SBG will continue to provide members with business collaboration, networking, and shared advertising opportunities. The Discover Sandwich brochure is being updated and 25,000 brochures will be produced and distributed via local businesses, direct mail to Sandwich, Moultonborough, Tamworth and Holderness homes, and by a media distribution company which stocks NH rest areas and brochure racks.
Educational workshops to help businesses with things like website design, blogging, marketing….are being planned to meet the needs of local business people. Relevant topics will be discussed at monthly meetings and workshops scheduled and designed to help small groups learn a new skill.
In addition to the brochure, the Sandwich Business Group maintains two websites. One site, www.sandwichbusinessgroup.com is member to member information such as meeting minutes, special projects, advertising opportunities, etc. The other site, www.discoversandwich.com, provides information about Sandwich businesses, organizations, and events. This website is linked to several other chambers and the state and is readily accessed by the public. Membership in the business group includes a mention on the website. The site also has a copy of the annual brochure which has business contact information, a map, and a small amount of information about each business. Members may opt to have additional information, photos, links, and a page about their business added if they wish.
Group advertisement in the annual Sandwich Fair Brochure and SBG membership in the Lakes Region Association, Squam Lakes Chamber of Commerce and the Ossipee Area Chamber of Commerce provide member business with a lot of public exposure. Collaborative advertising opportunities in newspapers, magazines and other media are available to member businesses. People living and vacationing in the area can easily learn about the shops, food, attractions, services, B&B’s, craftspeople, professionals, contractors, and people who own and operate businesses in and from Sandwich. All this helps keep Sandwich economy alive and helps the public buy local. When you think about friends and neighbors in Sandwich, nearly every family is either operating a small business from their home; or, at least one person in the family is working for or depends daily on a Sandwich business.
The Sandwich Business Group is taking an active role in providing some sponsorship for local events as community goodwill (and smart business). The sleigh rides during Christmas in the Village were sponsored by the SBG and local craftsmen. The Sandwich Sled Dog Races on February 21 are sponsored in part by SBG and individual member businesses. Prizes for fundraisers by local non-profits very often come from member businesses.
Quite often businesses will team up and enhance or even create an event. The gingerbread house contest in December came out of the Sandwich Business Group. In early February, businesses will work with Sandwich Recreation to enhance the Winter Carnival on February 7. Around Valentine’s Day an opportunity to shop locally and get specially made local gifts is being planned.
All Sandwich business owners of any size are encouraged to learn more about and to join the Sandwich Business Group. More than 100 businesses have been identified in Sandwich and more than 60 of them can be found in the 2008 Discover Sandwich Brochure and on the group’s website. Two gym instructors, Linda Litsky (Frances McDormand) and Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt) find a disc containing the memoirs of ex-CIA agent Osbourne Cox (John Malkovich) and mayhem ensues. Burn After Reading is rated R and is 96 minutes long.
Next up, on February 2 and 4, The Duchess is a costume drama as extravagant as the title character. Based on the life of Princess Diana's celebrated and scandalous ancestor Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire, in late 18th-century England, the film traces doomed affairs, love triangles, political intrigue and more. The film, rated PG-13, run 109 minutes.
Completing the series on February 9 and 11, Brideshead Revisited—inspired by the best-selling Evelyn Waugh novel of the same name—is a riveting drama of love, power and betrayal, featuring stunning performances by Academy Award winner Emma Thompson (Best Actress, Howard’s End, 1992) and Matthew Goode (The Lookout). When the charming aristocrat Sebastian invites Charles Ryder to his family's estate, Charles becomes seduced by the opulent lifestyle of the Marchmain family and by Julia, Sebastian's sister. As Charles and Julia’s romance deepens, repercussions follow, and Charles discovers that at Brideshead, love, money and power come at a price. Brideshead Revisited, 133 minutes long, is rated PG-13. It's a spellbinding story you'll want to revisit again and again.
No set admission is charged; instead ACT suggests a donation of $3-4 per person, which helps the non-profit organization continue to offer eclectic and innovative films for public viewing. Over the Hill Hikers Lib Bates writes: The Over the Hill Hikers of Sandwich gathered at Grille 25 last Thursday, January 22, for their annual banquet. After a delicious dinner, the varied program was introduced by Jim Twaddle, the master of ceremony.
Nan Russell, co-leader of the Hikers, recognized the various hikers who have completed mountain lists this year. Katie Burns and Henry Metzger were saluted with verses of the famous Over the Hill Hiker’s song: Crazy Hikers”, written especially for them by Nan. The Hiker Singers were accompanied by Nan on the guitar. Katie and Henry had completed the AMC list of 50 mountains in NH that are over 4000 feet. Other hikers with other accomplishments were saluted in various verses.
Remarks were made by Mary Cullen, membership; Mark Tuckerman, website and communication; and Lib Bates, historian. Lib also led in a moment of remembrance for Alan Nichols. Nick had been a Friday Walker.
The entertainment was provided by Walter Johnson and Sue Speers, each with hilarious readings. The printed program closed with closing remarks by Jim Twaddle.
