SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
This weekend is Independence weekend and all the Fourth of July festivities. At 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3, the Deacons of the Federated Church will hold their annual ice cream social in the Baptist Meetinghouse parking lot. Fireworks will be at dusk on the 3rd on the Sandwich Fairgrounds. Saturday evening, July 4 will be one of the Sandwich Fire and Rescue Department’s famous chicken Bar-B-ques. Hopefully all the rain, mist, and sticky weather will give way to sun and gentle breezes for summertime fun.
I’m not sure how many other people in town are having problems with their phone lines. On wet days, the land line at my house has been crackly and sometimes our dial-up Internet connects at remarkably slow speeds.. Because of this, I have set up a new e-mail account for the news so that I can go somewhere else and use the Internet. Please send news via e-mail to me at sandwichnews@hotmail.com You may still get news to me by leaving it in the gray/black box in the middle of my driveway at 22 Wentworth Hill Road, or by calling me at 284-7168. My news deadline is Sunday noon for publication Thursday.
Ice Cream Social At 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3 before the Town fireworks, come to the Baptist Meeting House parking lot for a good old fashioned ice cream social. Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry from the Sandwich Creamery await you. The hardest part will be choosing which sauce to add: a choice of Blueberry, Butterscotch, Chocolate, or Strawberry awaits you. Stop by and bring your family & friends!
Fireworks The Independence Day fireworks will be held Friday, July 3 at dusk (9:15ish) on the Sandwich Fairgrounds. The best viewing is from the Squam Lake Road Parking lot, the Sandwich Central School hill and playground, and Quimby Field. It is a professional show and there is plenty of parking and lots of great viewing places.
Chicken Bar-B-Q The Annual 4th of July barbecue sponsored by the Sandwich Fire Rescue Department will be held on Saturday, July 4th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Central Station located at 23 Wentworth Hill Rd.. Stop by for yummy chicken and all the fixin's! The food is terrific and the cause is great..
Goose Quilt Raffle At the Bar-B-Q you may also purchase raffle tickets for a quilt made by the Thursday Night Quilters. Each year the women who meet to sew at the firehouse on Thursday evenings make a special quilt for the Fire and Rescue Department to raffle as a fund-raiser. This year they have made a beautiful queen-sized flying geese quilt in tones of blue, brown , green and gray. The paper-pieced Canadian geese are quite striking. The drawing will take place at the end of the 2009 Sandwich Fair.
Holiday Hours The Sandwich Town Offices will be closed on Friday, July 3 for the Fourth of July holiday. The Transfer Station will be closed for the holiday on Saturday, July 4th. Fireworks will take place on the 3rd at dusk.
Both the North Sandwich and the Center Sandwich Post Office will close July 3 at noon and will reopen Monday morning as usual. Last pickup from the collection boxes (aka blue mailboxes) is also at noon. Carriers delivering mail to your mailbox will be on a "Saturday" schedule.
The North Sandwich office has the 2009-2010 Migratory Bird Stamps (Federal Waterfowl Stamp) available ($15 each).

Geese at Town Hall Pond Most of you know by now that we have two large groups of baby geese (gaggle?) with four adults that have decided to make their home at the Town Hall pond, for now. And while many of us have enjoyed watching these babies grow, the unfortunate side effect are all the droppings. Geese can make quite a mess of things, and their droppings are not healthy for the pond or for those animals or humans who want to enjoy the park.
The geese will leave voluntarily if their food source disappears. Please do not feed the geese. They are perfectly capable of finding their own food.
Archeological Investigation The Sandwich Historical Society is offering students an archaeology learning experience. John Perkins and the Historical Society hope you will join them in an archaeological investigation in Sandwich Notch, as a continuation of the August 2008 2 week Junior Historian Program. This activity is offered free to students just completing grades 4-5-6 as well as to those students who worked with them on the project last summer. Adults are welcome to take part. There is a limit on the number of participants. To learn about what was done last summer go to this link: http://www.sandwichhistorical.org/Additional-pages/Jr-Hist-2008-Arch-slideshow.htm
The 1-week field school, scheduled for July 13 to 17, will include hands-on field and laboratory experiences and opportunities to use scientific observation and techniques. The goals are to gather information about: the standing and former buildings, the evolution of the property, the former occupants, and their activities. The objectives will also be directed at trying to answer questions pertaining to differences reflected in the archaeological record due to economic status, ethnicity, consumerism, trash disposal and waste management.
Activities for this project include limited controlled subsurface archaeological testing of identified areas of archaeological sensitivity within the project area, surface collecting, and continued mapping of the exterior structural alignments, building interiors, the well structure, and other landscape modifications on the Colonel Lewis B. Smith site (27 -CA –161). The site is on Town property and was registered with the State of NH as an official archeological site.
They need kids with a variety of skills, so they hope that you will consider joining them for what promises to be a fun adventure! You can contact them by phone or email: SHS 284 – 6269; sandwichhistorical@earthlink.net

A Secret for Longevity Martha Carlson thinks that she has discovered on of the keys to the longevity of many Sandwich area people. She writes: Well, the evidence was pretty conclusive this past Saturday. How do people live to such old age, with grace, health and good spirits in Sandwich? Must be the Farmers' Market.
A number of 80 and 90-year-olds dropped in on the market last Saturday. Each was greeted by name, with hugs, handshakes and warm welcomes. Yes, people actually know your name, even when you're 85 or 93. And people are glad to see you and eagerly ask how the winter was and what you've been up to. Socializing must be part of the secret of long life even when the knees are creaky and that walk across the library parking lot is a day's adventure.
Deep greens are another part of it. Several nono-genarians were shopping for kale, chard or spinach. One friend, still driving, still keeping house for a family of children and grandchildren, wanted kale, the best of the dark greens. Every morning, she shreds up some greens, tosses them into a blender with OJ and other goodies and makes a green smoothie. "It's delicious," she said. Calcium, iron, micronutrients and antioxidants, all in a frostie smoothie of kale. I prefer mine steamed but when you're 90, who's to argue. The secret to health is in the leaves.
Flavor is another secret. "Last winter I suddenly lost my taste buds," said another senior friend. All the commercial jams, gifts from friends and grandchildren, tasted the same. "Try this," I offered. Fresh strawberry jam, low sugar, on some of Peg Loughran's Sunnyfield bread. "I can taste it," my friend cried. Fresh vegetables and fruit must have a way of stimulating even a 90-year-old taste bud.
Of course, the other element of Sandwich's longevity elixir is the good talk, chats that touch on politics, national and local, art, family, philosophy, nature, the eagle or bear in the backyard, the loon on Squam, and the wildflowers in the hayfield.
There were many small children at the market Saturday, beautiful children learning to taste jam, feed Val May's biscuits to Ellie, her new dog, or choose carefully which flavor of Creamery ice cream they would try. They are drinking in the market, building longevity molecules of Sandwich that will keep them young when they are 90.
You'd better join these people next Saturday to catch the secret. The Sandwich Farmer’s Market takes place ach Saturday morning from 9-12 under the pines behind the Samuel Wentworth Library.
Now, as July 4th brings flags out, it also brings out the first hearty feasts of summer—strawberries. Booty Farm will have some if they are still producing and not under water. Peg Loughran's incredible bread, Sunnyfield Bakery, will be there. And, Jennifer Martel's eggs are approaching summer's "magic bullet" status. The girls in the hen house have been pecking on Range View pak choi (very sophisticated for the girls) as well as radish tops and day-old lettuces. So the eggs are standing tall and getting bright, bright yellow. Maybe there’ll be some fresh broccoli and some super soft Angora bunnies to pet.
Announcing the New 5 Days of Sandwich Family Camp! Meet the Artists From July 1 through July 22 Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery will exhibit the two and three dimensional small format paintings of New York artist Lindsay Jessee and fine examples of wood turning by Sandwich artist, Robing Dustin. Dustin’s exhibit coincides with an exhibit of wood turning at the Currier entitled “Turning Wood into Art”. A reception to meet the artists will be held on Wednesday, July 8 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Jessee’s paintings explore various forms in space. As part sculpture the painting invites the viewer to examine the angles and the shadows of the work. As part painting the viewer is engaged by the color and composition of each piece. The double dimensionality of the work allows the viewer a “dual experience”
Dustin’s chargers, bowls and plates are on view at the gallery. Especially interesting are her stacked pieces made in various woods that create an intricate pattern and fit one inside the other. Also interesting are dyes and washes applied to her work. Dustin combines the vision and precision to turn a log or stump into a beautiful object.
Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery is located at 69 Maple Street (route 113) in Center Sandwich. Gallery hours are from 10 to 5 Monday through Saturday and 12 to 5 on Sunday. For more information please call 603 284 7728 or visit the website at www.patricialaddcarega.com.

Library Poetry Contest CHANGE. We heard this term repeated throughout President Obama's campaign. We've seen the recent postings on the Sandwich Board concerning the value of examining our loose change. We delight in the changing fall leaves.

The Friends of the Library will retain ownership of all poems entered (giving you full credit as the author) unless returned to the entrant, and reserve the right to make any necessary changes for the purpose of display or reproduction.

Master Plan Update The second public forum will be held at the Sandwich Central School on Wednesday evening, July 29, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This forum will focus on the strengths/concerns voiced at the first public forum, attempting to clarify or expand on the major themes. For example, what is it specifically that makes up the rural character or cultural diversity that we want to preserve. Also, we will begin to discuss potential strategies for preserving the current strengths and solving the challenges.
The Master Plan Update Committee is also working on a written survey that will be mailed to each property owner and/or voter, and we encourage each recipient to take the time to complete and return it.
The committee is trying very hard to make sure that every segment of the Sandwich community participates in this process and has a voice in developing a vision for the Town’s future. Please make a special effort to attend the next forum. We also welcome attendance at the Master Plan Update Committee’s regular meetings on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 5:00 at the Sandwich Town Hall.
Federated Church of Sandwich It’s a new season at the Federated Church! Pastor David Morgan leads morning worship each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the Baptist Meetinghouse. Dress is casual in line with the summer season. Child care is provided and refreshments are served after the service.

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
Wasn’t the sun a welcome sight over the weekend; I think we were all beginning to feel a bit moldy after so many dreary rainy days.. The ice cream social, fireworks, farmer’s market, baseball games, and chicken Bar-B-Q all pretty much managed to happen around the rain which is quite remarkable giving the number of sudden showers we had on Friday and Saturday. I know that we’ll have had some more rain by the time you read this column on Thursday; but the weather forecast sounds like we might be heading into a more “normal” pattern. All of us and our summer visitors need some nice comfortable sunny days to dry out and enjoy..
June Weather Data Rod Weinberg has collected and reported the data from his home weather station on Diamond Ledge Road. The average high temperature for the month of June was 73.2 degrees and the low was 53.2 deg. This is 0.8 degrees below normal. The warmest day(s) was 85 deg. on the 26,27,28 and the coolest 38 deg. on the 1st. Total precipitation for the month was 6.70" which is 2.57" above normal.
Wednesday Night Recitals Wednesday Night Recitals at Surroundings have started and will continue until August 26th. The schedule has been filled out and they are looking forward to some great musical entertainment during the summer. David Feurzeig will perform on July 15th. David is an assistant professor of music at the University of Vermont. He and his family spend some time during the summer in Sandwich. David will be playing the piano and you are in for a real treat. On July 22nd, Noelle Beaudin and Samuel Demers will be performing a piano/cello duet. These events couldn’t happen without having the beautifully reconstructed piano in the gallery provided by Lee Morton. So as the summer series begins, thanks go out to Lee and to all the local musicians who are going to perform. Check the surroundings website (www.surroundingsart.com) for the complete schedule.
A Photographic Journey of Sandwich The Sandwich Historical Society is sponsoring: "A Photographic Journey of Sandwich", The Collected Photographs of Joan Cook next week. The exhibit will be in the Craft Building on the Sandwich Fairgrounds. Sandwich Caregivers Summer rolls along and Sandwich Caregivers continues to provide services for home bound, non driving members of our community. Thanks to a large group of dedicated volunteers one of our neighbors is driven to Laconia for dialysis three mornings a week! Each driver does jut one run a month so truly “many hands make light work”. Tom Cullen organizes that schedule. With vacations etc he could do with one or two extra drivers. If you’d like to help call him at 284-7184. Remember never more than one run a month!
Meantime, Kay Greene, the volunteer coordinator, arranges rides for doctor visits, hospital trips, to the hairdresser, to pick up meds and on and on. If you or one of your neighbors needs assistance in this way please call Kay at 284-7004. Leave a message and she will get back to you.
Once again Sandwich Caregivers and all those it helps, greatly appreciates the willingness of the residents of Sandwich in assisting each other. Thank you.

This workshop is designed for high school students interested in American musical theatre but it is open to anyone older as well. The workshop can be viewed as a model for helping young singers learn to prepare for an audition. Covered will be elements of dress, preparation of music and selection of appropriate repertory.
The workshop will end between Noon and 1PM with the facilitators and participants presenting a small recital of musical theatre numbers. The entire workshop is open to the public for observation. $10 at the door for the general public. E-mail to above address for exactly location/directions.

Meet the Artists Through July 22 Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery will exhibit the two and three dimensional small format paintings of New York artist Lindsay Jessee and fine examples of wood turning by Sandwich artist, Robing Dustin. Dustin’s exhibit coincides with an exhibit of wood turning at the Currier entitled “Turning Wood into Art”.

A Few Notes from Sandwich Police Department Chief Rich Young writes: It's been a lousy summer so far with the all too frequent rainy days. Recently, however, we've enjoyed a couple of bright sunny ones. As stickers are not new and have been in effect for over twenty years, Carrie, Doug, and I have heard it all. The purchasing of a valid Sandwich beach sticker or guest pass is not nearly as difficult as some would have us believe. If you know any of us, you know that we are not power-hungry. Having a red sticker eliminates conversations in which we try to remind residents and their guests of this ordinance. If you have no sticker or an old blue one, we will talk with you and perhaps issue you a $50 fine. We get paid to enforce the rules; it's that simple. We speak to those who are not in accordance not to put a damper on their day, but because it is our job. Our reminders are meant to be friendly, but when faced with residents who excuse their non-compliance with reasons of "I forgot" or "I was not in town until now" or "I didn't know" our patience fades. Please stop with the excuses like "But I live here" or "I've been too busy" or "it'll only be a quick dip" or "You know me" etc etc. Simply get a sticker. The Town Hall is now open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. If these hours still do not fit into your schedule, the selectmen's office will mail you a sticker if you mail a copy of your registration and the correct fee of $6 ($5 for a guest pass). These availabilities make excuses like "I was not in town" tiring and obsolete. Furthermore, the boat launch to Squam Lake is for residents of Sandwich who have valid stickers only. The ordinance does not allow for a vehicle with only a guest pass to use the launch. There is a public launch to Squam Lake in Holderness, off of Rt 113. Also note the well posted parking signs in the village and comply with them. Many of you know that Jessie started Surroundings (with a little push from Will Lehman) back in 1980. She and her husband Steve, were residents and friends to many in Sandwich over the years. She died earlier this year in her home in New Jersey. After talking with Demi Ashton, her daughter, it was decided that the best way to help celebrate her life in Sandwich was to have an Open House much as she had each year over the 4th of July. Demi will be here for the Open House and surely stories of Steve and Jessie will fill the gallery. Jessie loved the gallery as well as the artists and their work. The gallery will be open for business during the Open House and 10% of any art sold will go to Jessie's favorite charity.

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
I have heard it said that it is hard to get people from Sandwich to volunteer. If that is true it is simply because people are busy volunteering. Do you know anyone in this community who doesn’t volunteer to do good in one way or another? I don’t.
I got to thinking about this last weekend when I stopped by the photographic exhibit of Sandwich put on by the Sandwich Historical Society. Joan Cook sure spent a good amount of time setting up the exhibit and just imagine how many days, weeks… went into collecting, cataloging, and putting it all together with the help of other volunteers. It sure is fun to see places and people you hear about and have seen and met years after those pictures were taken. Because of a great number of dedicated volunteers in Sandwich we have a lot of great things.
In the next few weeks we’ll have lots of chances to appreciate the efforts of volunteers as we head into August and Old Home Week. I’ll bet we’ll appreciate some of the work you are doing. Keep up the great work! And, by the way, Thank You!!!

Call for Volunteers, Sandwich Master Plan Update
In accomplishing the Sandwich Master Plan update, the committee’s preference is to use volunteer assistance wherever possible to hold down costs and increase community involvement. The tasks will vary depending on where we are in the estimated 18- month- long process. Currently, they need folks who can help with the written survey. Later, for example, they will need individuals who have an interest in being part of groups focused on developing plans and policies for particular areas, such as protecting natural resources, infrastructure, housing, recreation, etc.
With respect to the survey, they need volunteers who can help get it ready for mailing, for follow-up with recipients, and for organizing data in the returns. They hope to have the survey in the mail within the next few weeks. If you are willing to help out, please let them know as soon as possible, either by e-mail to cbewley@cyberpine.net or by phoning 603-284-6164. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
This week I am writing the column as a relatively liberated woman in that I no longer need to be tethered to a phone line or a constant stream of electricity. I am now wireless with a cell-phone and a laptop. This is a new concept for me as I tend to happily lag behind when it comes to technology and I just don’t do change well. It took a quite a bit of convincing and connecting on my husband’s part to bring me into this point. Having the phone in the house disconnected was a very big step for someone like me who is on the phone a lot with local people. It was a little like cutting the umbilical cord and trusting that life would continue at least as well as before.
If you tried to call me last Thursday, I apologize for the difficulty and odd messages. At the moment all my connections are working and I should be easier to reach than ever. I’m pretty sure that’s a good thing.
Most of the changes made sense as I needed to improve my technology to grow my business. As many of you have noticed, the phone lines in Sandwich have been full of static, interference, and crackling whenever it rains Our dial-up Internet connection has often very slow and this summer our Internet has been down more than it has been working. As I write most of the news from e-mails that people send me and I send the column to the newspapers via e-mail lack of reliable Internet has been a problem.
Contacting me to get news in the paper will require only a few changes on your behalf. My phone number is still 603 284 7168; it just “rings” or should I say it plays something that sounds like a wind chime on my new cell-phone. You may be as surprised as I was to learn that the phone number I’ve had in hard wired into my home for almost 20 years could be my cell-phone number. This was an important part of convincing me that I could go wireless. I am not yet a person who carries and/ or has a cell-phone turned on 24/7 and I will not answer the phone if I am driving or if it would be rude to someone with me in person. You can still leave a message just like in the past.
My e-mail will require a change. As Old Home Week news will be flowing in for next week and the week after, I have kept my metro2000 e-mail working until the end of August. However, please start sending news for the papers to me at sandwichnews@hotmail.com. I do still get the Sandwich Board on an old hotmail account and my business e-mail is still softtouchfarm03227@yahoo.com. The firstbridge e-mail has not worked for years. Please update your files.
Anyone who wishes to get news to me the old-fashioned way may still leave hand-written notes and photos in the black (now gray) box in the middle of the flower garden/tall weed patch at the fork in my driveway at 22 Wentworth Hill Road (Route 109 across from the Sandwich Central Fire Station. You can also just come to the back door ring the cow bell, knock, and/or holler

Call for Volunteers, Sandwich Master Plan Update In accomplishing the Sandwich Master Plan update, the committee’s preference is to use volunteer assistance wherever possible to hold down costs and increase community involvement.
