SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
How quickly we forget our old routines when new ones take their place. I am now on a different mental schedule now that I no longer have anyone in school. To me it’s been summer for several weeks as most of my peers have children in college and they have been home for more than a month. Some mornings I see the school bus go by and it strikes me that the public schools are still in session for a few more weeks. I still sometimes operate around the school day as I plan out 4-H projects. On those days I have to be ready for kids at 2:45. However at this time of year, when planning projects I am often scheduling around baseball and softball games and not school. Right now if I need to catch up with 4-H leaders, parents, and kids Quimby Field is the place to be on a nice afternoon.

Sandwich Farmer’s Market Monty Carlson has sent in a piece about the Sandwich Farmer’s Market which is now underway for the summer and fall. She writes: Jennifer's hens are polishing the eggs. The radishes are swelling up and getting redder. The lettuce, arugula and spinach are making sure they drink all the morning dew so they'll be very tender and sweet. All for you, this Saturday (and each Saturday during the summer and fall) from 9 a.m. to noon under the pines at the library in Center Sandwich.
Eating locally takes thought and purpose. All of our loyal buyers and shoppers last year helped every local grower buy groceries, pay the taxes, real sustaining of our families. And you talked to us about what vegetables you like, the cilantro and basil you must have, the blue hubbard you dream of. We've planted them for you this spring. And we've enriched the soil, encouraged a whole cosmos of nutrients, microorganisms, worms and creepy crawlies to aerate Sandwich lumps into rich chocolatey soil. We're sustaining Sandwich lands, with your help.
Best of all, the market might sustain you, filling your veins with the incredible and nutritious and delicious wonders of spinach picked Saturday at dawn. Come and sustain yourself. One bite of a French breakfast radish might set you up for a week. Sunday's omelet needs locally grown cage-free eggs! See you there.
Sandwich Gallery Walk Friday, June 19 from 5-7 p.m. is the day of the first Gallery Walk in Center Sandwich. Join the Galleries and the Corner House Inn for an evening stroll through the town looking at the best in art and craft. Finish with a delicious dinner at the Corner House Inn! A visit to all three galleries will earn you a discount on your dinner.
Several years ago Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery, the Sandwich Industries, and Surroundings Gallery joined with the Corner House Inn to initiate Gallery Walks in Center Sandwich. Though not a new idea (First Friday’s exist in many cities) , the charm of Sandwich and the fact that there are three galleries in this very small center seemed a natural combination for an evening of culture and cuisine. Visitors to the evenings have been very enthusiastic about the Gallery Walks so bring your family and friends and come to Sandwich on June 19!
Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery shows contemporary art in all media. The gallery has revolving shows during the summer months. The current exhibit is “Limited Editions”, an exhibit of monotypes, and other work in small edition. www.patricialaddcarega.com
The Sandwich Home Industries exhibits crafts at their best. Set just behind the village green, visitors to the industries will find glass, wood, jewelry, fiber and clay among the crafts on view. 284 6831
Surroundings Gallery specializes in New Hampshire landscapes. On exhibit are a wide range of paintings in oil and watercolor by artists painting in our state. Also the wonderful pigs of David McPhail are a delight to young and old alike. www.surroundingsart.com.
The Corner House Inn is the mainstay of fine dining not only in Sandwich but also in the Lakes Region. Both locals and visitors enjoy delectable dishes created in the kitchen of the CHI. Whether you are in the pub or the dining rooms downstairs, an evening at the Corner House combines great atmosphere with great food. www.cornerhouseinn.com.
Let’s Cut the Baloney! Let’s scoop the Jell-O and hoist some macaroni and cheese too. But let’s do it with metal utensils rather than plastic! The Sandwich Central School’s Green Team wants to switch the school’s cafeteria cutlery from the daily throw-away plastic now being used to the more environmentally sound stainless steel variety that can be found in most of our kitchens. The students are seeking donations of stainless steel spoons, knives and forks. Any number of extra pieces that you no longer use or are willing to spare will be very gratefully collected at these locations: 1. The dump (please let Marilyn know that they are for the school); 2. Mocha Rizing; 3. At the front office of the school. The Green Team thanks you!

American Lung Association Fundraiser Rachel Booty Bartlett writes: You may have seen my son Parker and I riding through the Lakes Region on our tandem (2 person) bike during the past two months. We are training to ride 180 miles across the state of Maine in support of the American Lung Association. Our training is going great but we have 10 days till our ride and still have not yet met the minimum fundraising goal to ride ($500 each).
We are looking for sponsors to support our ride for clean air and healthy lungs. If you can make a small donation to our ride we have a donation jar at Mocha Rizing or you can donate online at www.mrsnv.com/evt/e01/pldg/search.jsp?id=2078. Just enter in our names: Rachel Bartlett or Parker Caswell. Thank you for your support!!
Wednesday Night Recitals Don Sutton. owner of Surroundings Gallery, is once again going to host Wednesday Night Recitals during July and August. The intent of these events is to showcase some of the wonderful musical talent we have in the area in a small, intimate setting. These are not professional "gigs", but rather non professionals who enjoy sharing their gift with the community or emerging professionals who need a little exposure. Or in the case of some emerging professionals, it is an opportunity to gain some exposure to the community.
Don writes: “Last year we had the opportunity to hear several pianists (Nixon Bicknell, Nick Nichols, Noelle Beaudin, Tom Robinson, Mary Fleishman), jazz combos (Tom Robinson, Trish Holland), and performances by students from the New Hampshire Independent School of Music. A real delight was when Jerry Butters said he would fill in for Nick Nichols and stunned the audience with his keyboard skills on the piano. He had never played in public, but was wonderful.”
Shepley Metcalf, Mary Fleishman, and Trish Holland are already on the schedule and once again he will have performances by students from the New Hampshire Independent School of Music. But he is still looking for others who may be interested. Please contact Don at 284-6888 if you are interested. The evenings are relaxed and fun and a great way to gain confidence in performing in public. But more importantly, it is an opportunity for the community to witness and celebrate the tremendous performing arts capability that surrounds us.

Results of the Master Plan Update First Public Forum A total of 86 people attended the Sandwich Master Plan update first public forum on May 2, 2009. The attendees split into seven small groups to discuss what they saw as Sandwich’s strengths and challenges. Combining the groups’ results, the five top-ranked strengths were: natural/water resources and the environment; the active, caring community; the small town, rural character; demographic diversity; and cultural identity -- sense of history/historic preservation. The five top-ranked concerns were: the need for more jobs/retail/services; the challenge of maintaining municipal services without raising taxes; retaining high levels of social connectivity/volunteerism; embracing sustainability and energy conservation; and protecting natural resources and open spaces.
The second public forum will be held at the Sandwich Central School on Wednesday evening, July 29, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This forum will focus on the strengths/concerns voiced at the first public forum, attempting to clarify or expand on the major themes. For example, what is it specifically that makes up the rural character or cultural diversity that we want to preserve. Also, we will begin to discuss potential strategies for preserving the current strengths and solving the challenges.
The Master Plan Update Committee is also working on a written survey that will be mailed to each property owner and/or voter, and we encourage each recipient to take the time to complete and return it.
We are trying very hard to make sure that every segment of the Sandwich community participates in this process and has a voice in developing a vision for the Town’s future. Please make a special effort to attend the next forum. We also welcome attendance at the Master Plan Update Committee’s regular meetings on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 5:00 at the Sandwich Town Hall.
