SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
Spring is in full bloom with all the trees starting to blossom and push leaves and spring bulbs and flowers in full bloom. I just love having all this color appear.
Birds are singing joyful songs as they feast on black flies and earth worms and build nests and start families. The birds in my yard must have very soft nests as my angora rabbits have left plenty of tufts of hair scattered about.
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10. No special day goes uncelebrated in Sandwich. This weekend, the seasonal shops and galleries open for the spring/summer/fall and each one has special promotions. You can keep mom lovingly occupied this weekend without ever leaving town. Start off Saturday with coffee, a treat, and some shopping at Mocha Rizing and then check out the plant, bake and yard sale at the Library—many great plants, sweets, and deals are to be found.
Walk over to the Sandwich Home Industries and save 10% off your purchases of New Hampshire Art. Visit Willow Pond Antiques and Goods and Surroundings Gallery for gifts made and selected for moms. Have a meal at the Corner House and for a limited time enjoy some fiddle heads. Stop at Patsy Ladd Carega’s Gallery on Maple Street and see what new items she has for the season.
The North Sandwich Store will help you pack a lunch or a snack for an excursion and you can check out a few antiques while you wait. Take a walk or a hike on one of many trails around here. Go for a Kayak or boat ride. For dessert get a pint of ice cream or some cheese at the Sandwich Creamery and pet the cows. While you are out that way get a few more flowering plants from Wayside Farm or some vegetable starts at DeFilippe Greenhouses. You and Mom will have a great day.
There’s live music at the Corner House Pub on Friday evening, at Mocha Rizing Sunday mid-day and at surroundings Art Gallery on Sunday afternoon. Have fun this weekend! Happy Mother’s Day!
A Wedding? Well no, but there will still be: something old - (library furnishings yard sale); something new - (fresh baked delights to tame the most savage sweet tooth); something borrowed - (a book perhaps – it is the library after all); something blue--and red and green and yellow…--(Perennials! Annuals! Cut flowers!).
All the above goodies will all be at the 2nd annual "Bodacious Blossoms and Blissful Baked Goods Extravaganza" (that's right "extravaganza"!) on Saturday, May 9 from10-1 at the Samuel Wentworth library. This one-stop shopping is provided just in time for Mother's Day. All proceeds from the event will benefit youth services at the library.
P.S. - the Friends of the Library are still most gratefully accepting donations of baked goods until Friday, May 8th, 4-6 p.m., and Saturday, May 9th, 8-10 a.m. Thank you!
Bodacious Blossoms & Blissful Baked Goods Are Back! The Plant and Bake Sale is returning to the Samuel Wentworth Library for an encore performance on Saturday, May 9th. Once again, the Friends of the Samuel Wentworth Library will be offering a variety of perennials and annuals for your garden’s spring makeover. Cut flowers will also be for sale. While browsing the blooms you can indulge in a wide variety of delicious home baked items; everything from Aunt Ida’s “Knock Your Socks Off” chocolate chip cookies to coffee cakes, quick breads and more. (Donations of baked goods will still gratefully be accepted until Friday, May 8th, 4-6 p.m., and Saturday, May 9th, 8-10 a.m.) Proceeds from the event will support youth services at the library. Become a member of the Sandwich Historical Society! The membership drive in 2008 was very successful; Sandwich Historical Society increased its membership by over 100 people. This year, they are going to strengthen the Society by providing increased value to members. The first step in this process is to foster dialogue in this community of choice. The goal in 2009 is to engage the entire membership to promote an all-inclusive history of Sandwich. Your participation in this organization helps to find the stories that we all share and to celebrate them. One of the benefits of your membership is the option of adding your email address to the society’s database so that we can provide you with direct communication about current projects.
You can become a member by filling out a membership card which is available at the Society's website at www.sandwichhistorical.org, the Wentworth Library, and the Society's Marston House.
As the Society looks to the future, a more involved membership community is a prerequisite to a strong historical society. Become a member today and through shared efforts, you are inspired to participate in SHS programs, exhibits, and special projects. Although these are turbulent economic times, SHS endeavors to remain strong for you.
The History of the Sandwich Fairs The Sandwich Historical Society is looking for photos, artifacts, and documents for the 2009 exhibit. Israel Grange #158 as it relates to the Fairs; Fair Parade; Concord Coach; Buildings & Grounds; Grandstand and Grounds; Entertainment; Fairgoers; Dedicated Leaders: Past and Present; Operating Structure; Departments and Exhibitors; Fair Food; Commercial Vendors.
The SHS would love to see as many Sandwich faces in the exhibit as possible. So dig deep into those photo albums in the attic! They are also putting together a presentation of old Fair films and videos so let them know if you have any of those you wish to contribute. Contact Matt Powers at 284-6269 or email at sandwichhistory@earthlink.net

Sandwich Fairgrounds With the weather getting better and better everyone (almost) is out walking. Please remember that when walking on the fair grounds you dog must be on a leash. Other walkers with or without dogs may not want a dog running up to them that they do not know! Also, if your dog leaves anything on the grounds you should be prepared to pick it up and take it with you this includes inside the fenced in areas as well.
There should be no cars on the grounds. The fields are still "soft" and we do not want the expense of smoothing them out for parking or other functions. The road way is not a public way for vehicles to take a short cut, please stay to the regular roads. Thank you for your cooperation with these issues. The Sandwich Fair Office

SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED BY DIANE COOK JOHNSON
Last week I saw my first moose and bear of the season. I was coming back into Center Sandwich one mid-morning last week and a handsome but confused young male moose was checking the Reidy’s mailbox at the base of Wentworth Hill. He just stood there and looked at me for a few minutes before he walked back into the woods. The bear I saw was just off Route 109 near Suissevale in Moultonborough; it looked quite black, shiny, and fairly large.

Benz Center News Summertime is party time-- graduation parties, wedding receptions, family gatherings. Make your reservation soon as the dates are filling up. There are workshops and classes, too. Farmers' Market Plans for Summer 2009 Put June 6 on your calendar. The Sandwich Farmers' Market will open that Saturday, 9 to 12 under the pines behind the library. Sandwich growers met last week to plan the summer. Every greenhouse is burgeoning with beautiful green seedlings. And farmers are watching with joy as peas, lettuce, radishes, spinach and other early crops pop out of the ground.
If you can't wait for the first taste of spring, stop by Range View Farm, Vittum Hill Road, for some rhubarb. For home gardeners, Range View has early brassicas--cabbages, pak choi and broccoli sets to plant early while it's cool. They're open Saturday and Sunday, 10 to 4 p.m. Jennifer Martel, Maplewood Farm, on Vittum Hill, is welcoming a new flock of layers. And Val May is baking a slew of tasty dog yummies. Stop by Jen's cozy shop to buy fresh eggs, Val's dog treat and other goodies.
Sandwich’s Farmers are planting your favorites--cilantro for Latin friends, basil for pesto chefs. Ask your local grower about the foods you love. There is time now for growers to meet your needs and wants. So tell them what you savor.
Gardens and greenhouses are exquisite now. Call your nearest grower and ask if you can stop by just to look. You might get a taste of first spinach. You can buy Booty Farm lettuces at Heath's. Kirk and Nancy Read are growing their usual gorgeous goodies. And, in a year when growing locally is big news, even at the White House, talk to growers about how you might have a little garden in your backyard. Even a plot 8 by 8 feet can grow the herbs you use every day, tasty tomatoes and a special treat like your own cabbage. One pot with a hearty cherry tomato can add a delicious highlight to your patio.
Diane Johnson of Soft Touch Farm spent a good part of Mother’s Day weekend at the New Hampshire Sheep and Wool Festival selecting some great colors and textures of wool, some new books, kits and tools for needle-felting. Several local sheep owners are also sending some fleeces her way so there will be lots of Sandwich wool available this summer. And, of course an angora bunny or two will be at the Farmer’s Market to visit each week.
Golf Anyone? The 4th Annual Carroll County Law Enforcement Golf Tournament for Special Olympics of NH will be held on June 1st, at Ridgewood Golf Club, in Moultonboro. All are welcome. Don't be embarrassed if you don't play that often, or that well. It's a great time and for a super cause. Contact Rich Young at 284-7139 for details.

He, along with community groups are building wells so that children do not have to walk daily 1 to 3 miles to secure clean water for their families. Dr. Hoffman is the son of Silke and Bill Hoffman, who are and have been for several years, residents of Center Sandwich.
The evening will start at 5 p.m. ___________________ DATE???????? in the Benz Center with the Hoffman presentation, followed by a 6 p.m. light supper of a variety of salads, breads and dessert donated by women in the Federated Church. Christopher Hoffman served in Swaziland as a Peace Corps volunteer from 1992-1994. Since then he has gone to medical school, internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship. He is now at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and is doing operational and clinical research on HIV in South Africa.
His work in Swaziland is separate from his job as he has remained friends with community leaders since his stay as a member of the Peace Corps. They have started the African Education Fund in the US that partners with a Swaziland organization. Both partners are specially concerned about children being able to go to school, not overburdened with family responsibilities or too poor to afford school fees and uniforms and orphaned often because of AIDS, and often unable to have access to a medical clinic.

Outreach-Swaziland The Board of Outreach of the Federated Church has researched and is presenting for Sandwich and nearby communities a presentation with slides by Dr. Christopher Hoffman about his work with community leaders to initiate several projects in Swaziland.
The program will be at 5 p.m. on Sunday May 31 at the Benz Center, followed by a 6 PM light supper of salads, breads and dessert made by the women of the Federated Church. This event will raise funds to be divided between the Church Budget and Dr. Hoffman's projects in Swaziland. We ask a $6 donation for each adult and $4 for each child in return for the suppers.
Dr Hoffman's projects include:
(1) Scholarships for primary school children who are orphans (due to HIV). Often these children cannot pay for school uniforms and supplies and may need to ride on public transportation to the school
(2)Building water wells and water catchments. Children procure water for their families and sometimes have to walk several miles for safe drinking water, that takes time away from the school day
(3)Providing micro-loans and business guidance to community groups involved in small enterprise (mostly to women's groups with activities such as sewing, chicken raising and soap making)
(4)Supporting youth activities
(5)Providing micro-loans and organizational support to HIV support groups
(6) Community wide HIV care education
(7)Community primary care clinic days
(8)Building a primary care clinic and HIV care clinic (to incorporated into the Ministry of Health)
