What is your name and the name of your business?

How did you get to Sandwich, NH?
Katrine writes: I made a decision to move to New Hampshire as an attempt to start fresh in my life and live in more accordance with my values of caring for nature and exploring my own creativity. I was looking for a place where I could spend more time in nature and on my creative pursuits such as photography, writing, and painting.
I came to NH in the fall of 2019 and started work as the pharmacy manager in Meredith at the Hannaford supermarket. Once I was settled into the job and into a tiny little apartment, I began to search for my dream home. I told my agent that I wanted a big house so that I could accommodate my friends and family for visits and I wanted to be right in the midst of nature so I didn’t have to travel to spend time doing what I love.
After a year of searching and having two other houses under contract, the property at 711 Mount Israel popped up on my real estate search. It was higher than I could afford but by this time, Richard had uprooted his life from VT and I wasn’t doing life alone anymore. I felt that with his support, we would be able to afford the property together.
When Richard and I came to visit the property, we felt like we had come home. The aura of peace and serenity was palpable. I felt different here and I immediately told my agent that I was going to make an offer. If I had waited one more day, we may not have ended up here. We are so grateful to be here in Sandwich and very excited to start hosting guests this summer!
What got you started in this job?
RIchard and I have both traveled extensively and we enjoy meeting people. We've both also been looking for a home for a long time. When we saw this opportunity to have a home where we could meet people from all over the world without leaving, we couldn't pass it up. We were looking for a place to call home and what we found instead was a B&B business to run!
Tell us about your business.
We offer respite from the madness of the outside world. The B&B is set on over 5 acres of beautiful land, directly across from the White Mountain National Forest, and down the street from Chapman Sanctuary. We offer comfortable accommodations, hot breakfast, and the chance to experience peace listening to the ever-present wildlife surrounding the property.
How did your business get started?
This house was built in 1787. It has served many purposes over the years such as a rooming house, a tavern, and was connected to the underground railroad. More recently, John and Susan Davies bought the property and developed The Jonathan Beede House B&B as a business. They ran it successfully for about 20 years and graciously passed it along to us with the purchase of the house in the fall of 2020.
What is the most fun/satisfying aspect of your job?
Currently the most fun part of the job is the excitement surrounding who we will meet as we begin accepting guests. We both love community and connection and it will be really great for us to be able to meet new and interesting people from all over the world while staying in one place.
What is the hardest?
The hardest part about the job was buying it right in the middle of a pandemic. Luckily we are not in a situation where we are reliant on funds from the business to survive. We both have other useful skills and we have continued to learn more about patience as we await our food licensing and first guests.
What has happened to your business in this last Covid year?
We decided that we would not try to open and accommodate guests during the pandemic. We needed time to get settled, acquire furniture, and get the property ready for opening.
What are your goals and hopes for the future?
We are offering a beautiful sanctuary for travelers and continuing to develop the property in ways that are beautiful and sustainable. We are creating a special place that can give people a relaxing and unique experience. We are looking forward to hosting workshops with a healing focus.
What else can you tell us about yourself and your business?
I love photography, hiking, art, and spending as much time in connection with nature as possible. I came to NH because I wanted a place to heal and grow into myself as a creative person. I was hoping to spend my days off from work hiking, taking photos, and trying my hand at new creative endeavors. I am now taking on the B&B as an extension of those creative endeavors. I hope to see it flourish into something even more beautiful and unique than it already is.
Richard has been extensively involved in the upkeep and maintenance of the house and land since we moved in. He cares deeply about stewarding the property and he loves to interact with new people. He loves music and playing his saxophone and looks forward to forming a band in the area. He is excited to be a part of the community and is enjoying his time working in the woods of Sandwich.
