Children’s Christmas Party Success

Trecia McEvoy, 2025 Program Committee Chair of the Woman’s Club Children’s Christmas Party, writes: While the snow caught many of us off guard this morning, we still had a small but mighty crowd of 25 children with their parents and grandparents come to Town Hall for gifts, cookies, apples, oranges, mittens, gloves, hats, socks, a story and music by Papa Joe and most importantly a visit with Santa!
The Sandwich Woman’s Club has been hosting this party in one form or another for nearly 90 years! Thank you to all that made this happen for the families of this town. If you missed it this year, keep an eye out for the announcement for next year. We’ll be there and we hope you will too!
And what do you do when unexpected snow threatens Santa’s safe arrival? Well you head outside to shovel the path yourself and see our very own Officer Fogarty has beat you to it! Where else but Sandwich are you going to receive such personal service?

Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods
We hope you will spend some time in the forest with us at the sanctuary this weekend.  Get your cross-country skis ready and glide through the beautiful wintry landscape at CSVW.  If you like to snow shoe, you will enjoy exclusive “snow-shoe only” access on the River Trails all the way down to the icy Cold River.  Bundle up your family and get outside at Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods located at 740 Mt. Israel Road in lovely Sandwich, New Hampshire .CSVW Spend the whole day or just a couple of hours at CSVW. Trails are open every day from dawn until dusk free of charge with plenty of parking. Please sign in at the VISITOR’S KIOSK where you will find trail maps and other information. Enjoy!
A Look Back

Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Below is one excerpt. Relax in your favorite reading spot and enjoy reading a few minutes of Sandwich history. Visit sandwichhistorical.org and click on miscellany and mystery to read more.
December 18,1919:
~The trustees of the Alfred Quimby Fund have this week sent for the use of all Sandwich schools, three victrolas with twenty-three high class records and three organs. Mr. Arthur Heard of Manchester, one of the trustees, said, “We believe these instruments in the schools will not only give great pleasure to the boys and girls, but will be instructive and educational. Doubtless the deportment and attendance of the schools will help in the placing of these machines. It is therefore an incentive for good and trust the pupils will derive much pleasure and profit from this gift.”
~If you wish the union Christmas trees to be held in the town hall on Christmas Eve to be a success, do your part by bringing gifts to be placed on the tree. In the past few years the tendency has been to have family trees and not to help the town tree. These trees are free to everyone and everyone is urged in this way to make it a success.

Sandwich Singers Holiday Concerts

Another Christmas tradition arising from the talented Sandwich folk – the Sandwich Singers Holiday Concerts, with three dates and locations:
December 10, Melvin Village Community Church, Melvin Village
December 14, Methodist Meeting House, Center Sandwich
January 2, St. Andrew's-in-the-Valley, Tamworth

TREATY

Local Actor Rebecca Cole writes: If you have seen the posters for TREATY around town and wonder what it was…here goes. TREATY is a Play. A play about real people. People who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 for creating and help to ratify the TPNW—Treaty on the Prohibition Nuclear Weapons…
This wonderful, funny, provocative, true play is traveling the world, and it is landing in our town for the Solstice. December 19, 20, 21st. 2 actors from NYC, 1 from Rhode Island (via Africa) and Me. This is truly a labor of love and an inspiring call to action for real Peace on Earth.
I have loved working on this play. It weaves a fascinating true story through a maize of international obstacles and diplomacy. Each time the play is performed it pivots and weaves local issues with thoughtful worldwide challenges. It tells the story of a new nuclear weapons treaty – one that’s trying to give the power to eliminate nuclear weapons to the states, and people, who don’t possess them. I’ve never done or seen a show like it. I promise you a wonderful night or afternoon. It is appropriate for 16-year-olds and 96-year-olds and everyone in between. It will give your family inspiring and hopeful things to talk about over the holidays, for sure! The Foothills is offering a Dinner Theater Package on Friday and Saturday Night as well as our usual Brunch before the Sunday Matinee.

Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.
