A Look Back

Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Below is one excerpt. Relax in your favorite reading spot and enjoy reading a few minutes of Sandwich history. Visit sandwichhistorical.org and click on miscellany and mystery to read more.
December 26, 1901:
~Five or six inches of snow the first of the week makes good sleighing again.
~There was a Christmas tree at the chapel at East Sandwich on Tuesday evening, also at the Chick schoolhouse. The usual Christmas tree and exercises at the town hall Wednesday evening were thoroughly enjoyed by a crowed of little folks for whom they were designed.
~Our shortest days for this season have again been reached and everyone will watch eagerly to notice the lengthening of the days.
~The death of Caleb M. Quimby on Dec. 19, was a shock to his friends although not unexpected, nor under the circumstances to be deplored. His extreme suffering of late made death seem as naught but a sweet release.  Mr. Quimby was born in Sandwich on Nov. 3, 1827. When a boy he served his apprenticeship as a blacksmith in the shop of the late Jesse Ambrose, at a time when learning that trade meant much more than at present. Every nail, horse-shoe, hinge as well as the tools with which to handle the work had to be wrought by the very muscle of the workman. Labor saving inventions there were none. After learning the trade, he went into business for himself at the Lower Corner.  He will be greatly missed for his genial ways and kindly greeting. Mr. Quimby was a man of ready wit and marked originality making him well known to all.

Selectmen's Update - December 16, 2025

The Board spent the work session discussing employment contracts with the Fire Chief and Police Sergeant. The Board previously had several department heads under contract. Based upon legal feedback and review of contract conditions, the Board agreed to forgo use of contracts for most positions. The Town will continue to implement employment contracts with the Fire Chief, Police Chief, and Police Sergeant.
In the regular meeting, the Board discussed a Town Hall Facility Use Request. The Board reviewed/approved several items:
  • Revaluation and General Assessing Contracts for town assessing services.
  • Correspondence with a property owner regarding permitting needs.
  • An employee memo regarding previously approved policy updates, effective January 1st.
The Board discussed updates regarding several budget topics:
  • Police Building – the Budget Committee and Selectboard are considering use of a bond to bridge the gap between current savings and the total projected cost for replacement of the building in 2026. Preliminary figures are available for interest rates as the Committee works with our contractor to finalize building specifications and related budget figures.
  • Basket Street Bridge – the Town has been in discussions regarding cost estimates and engineering needs for future completion of Basket Street Bridge. We anticipate completion in the 2027 budget cycle; 2026 efforts will be focused on bidding and cost estimating to prepare for completion.
  • Town Bridge assessments – the 2026 budget will include engineering fees associated with assessment of most town bridges and a culvert on Millbridge Road. Assessment will support the Town’s capital planning for the near future.
  • Fire Department consultant – the 2026 budget includes funds for a consultant to assist the town in strategic planning specific to the Fire Department. The Board is discussing the scope of work for a consultant, deliverables sought, and related budget.
  • Department head communication – the Board is exploring ways to streamline and improve department head reporting and communication.
In other business, the Board discussed the following:
  • dissolution of the Broadband Advisory Committee. The Board will revisit the topic in their next regular meeting.
  • Zoning Compliance concerns – the Board will invite a property owner to an upcoming Selectboard meeting to discuss noncompliance with the Zoning Ordinance.
  • Commissioner vacancies on the Lakes Region Planning Commission – the Board seeks interested members of the public to serve on behalf of the town. More information can be found at LRPC’s website.
The Board concluded the meeting discussing Selectmen’s reports. The Board uses a liaison model for all committee/boards and department heads. Selectmen’s reports allow for board-wide updates regarding activities that occur in meetings, department head conversations, and discussions with residents.
As a reminder, Town Offices will be closed Thursday, December 25th. We wish everyone safe and happy holidays!

Master Plan Writers Wanted

From the Sandwich Master Plan Committee:
Sandwich stepped up in a big way for the Master Plan survey. We received 695 responses, an exceptional level of participation for a town our size. This gives us a strong foundation of community input. Now we move into the next phase: turning that input into well-organized sections of the updated Master Plan.
The Master Plan Committee is looking for volunteer writers and contributors to help develop these chapters. This is, at its core, a writing project — but you do not need to be a professional writer to participate. We welcome residents from all backgrounds who can help summarize information, organize ideas, and clearly communicate what the community has said.
What Volunteers Will Do
·       Draft one section or chapter of the Master Plan (topics assigned with your input).
·       Use the relevant SurveyMonkey results provided.
·       Identify additional data your section may need; the Committee will help locate it.
·       Follow a shared structure and schedule so sections are consistent.
·       Collaborate with our editor for guidance and refinement.
Helpful Qualifications
·       Ability to write clearly and concisely.
·       Comfort organizing information or working from data summaries.
·       Good follow-through on timelines.
·       Interest in local issues, even if you’re not an expert.
·       Willingness to revise your draft based on editor and Committee feedback.
·       A collaborative spirit and appreciation for Sandwich’s long-term planning needs.
What You Don’t Need
·       Professional writing or planning experience.
·       Technical expertise in your topic area.
·       Prior knowledge of the full Master Plan structure — it will evolve.
If you’re interested or have questions, please email [email protected]  with a brief note about your background and topic areas you might feel comfortable exploring.

Tax Bills Due

Sandwich property tax bills for 2025 were mailed on November 20 to Sandwich property owners, to the address on file with the town. The taxes are due on or before Tuesday, December 23, 2025. If your mail is being forwarded or you believe you may have a delay in receiving your mail, you may access the Tax Kiosk on the town website, sandwichnh.org, to find your amount due; you may search by Owner, Parcel ID or Address. You can then view and/or print your bill, however you cannot pay your bill online.
Note: Parcel IDs (Map/Lots) were changed in 2024 due to GIS remapping. Search by Owner or Address for best results or reach out to the tax office at 603-284-7113 to confirm the amount due.
You may make your payment in person, via mail, Bill Pay (from your bank account) or our secure Drop Box (located at the back entrance to Town Hall; top of the ramp). Kindly include a self-addressed stamped envelope along with your receipt stub if you would like your receipt mailed to you.
If your taxes are paid out of an escrow account, please do not remit payment to the town as this will be handled by your financial institution.
For questions related to your tax assessment, please contact the Selectmen’s Office at (603) 284-7701.
For questions related to your tax bills, please contact the Tax Collector’s Office at (603) 284-7113.
The Tax office is closed Holidays and Election Tuesdays. Forms of payment accepted at the Tax Collector's Office are cash and checks only (no credit or debit cards). Checks include ‘BILL PAY’ from your bank to the Town of Sandwich (Acct # should reference your Parcel ID or Street Address).
As a reminder, the total tax rate of $9.25 is comprised of four categories:
  • Municipal rate – the town’s budgetary decisions only influence this rate. 2025 municipal rate: $2.83. (note: there are only about 20 other towns out of 119 with lower municipal rates)
  • Local education – the Interlakes School District’s budgetary decisions determine this rate. 2025 local education rate: $4.57.
  • State education – state legislation impacts this calculation. 2025 state education rate: $1.13.
  • County: this is influenced by the decisions made at the Carroll County government level. 2025 county tax rate: $0.72

Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.
