Winter is still not quite here yet, but you wouldn’t know it if you stopped through Sandwich. You might think you stepped into a glittery Christmas card or a famous Holiday song, with the chilly air, fluffy white snow blanketing every surface, and tiny diamonds floating down from the clouds. Here’s a few of the fun and interesting events coming up in the next couple weeks in and around Sandwich: (you can read more about them below!) December 12 – Remick Park Input Session December 13 – A Christmas Carol Reading December 13 – Brian Hastings at Cornerhouse December 14 – SHI Community Appreciation Day December 15 – Sandwich Singers Concert December 21 – Winter Solstice Spiral walk December 22 – Children’s Christmas Party Christmas in the Village Christmas in the Village was a great success! Sandwich Resident Nancy Starmer writes: A big thanks to Wendy Shambaugh and others who helped her organize and market this weekend! Thanks too to the crews that kept the roads and driveways and sidewalks open and safe; to all of the artists, crafters, cooks, bakers, musicians, etc. who worked so hard to prepare their wares and to share their talents with the rest of us; and to all of the town organizations and businesses that participated on Saturday and Sunday to make this such a wonderful and fun weekend in Sandwich! Not only did lots of townspeople come out, but I met people from all of the towns around us from Meredith to Wolfeboro to North Conway, and saw several summer people who were back in town for the event. Some of the older kids definitely wear adult socks and mittens. We will have boxes at the LIBRARY and TOWN HALL for you to drop off your contributions, by December 18th. Thank you all in advance and hope to see you Sunday, December 22nd at the Town Hall. A Look Back Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Below are some excerpts. Grab a warm drink, settle down in your favorite reading spot and enjoy! Check out www.sandwichhistorical.org/miscellany-and-mystery online for more. December 14, 1911: Burt Chase had a porker killed recently which dressed 400 lbs., and weighed, not estimated alone. A good many hogs are estimated only. ~The weather is unusually warm for the season. The snow in the roads is nearly gone. ~There have been quite a good many complaints of late of losing things ordered sent by mail. It costs only ten cents additional to register the package and that insures its safe carriage. A friend of the writers of late sent some six dollars to Jordan & Marsh, the well-known Boston firm. The package was lost and Jordan & Marsh Co. duplicated the order and sent it by express at their own expense. Not many mail order houses will do that, so register every package. ~Parties of late have been inspecting the Jose timberlands and some other properties. They report one large spruce scaling about 1800 feet. It was nine feet or more in circumference, and would go sixty feet or more to the first limb. Botanical Lampshades The Shade Shed at Botanical Lampshades is closed for the season. But for an appointment call or email Jennifer Allen, 603-284-7468. Upon review of the Town’s unexpended fund balance policy and after careful consideration, the Board of Selectmen have applied $100,000 of unexpended fund balance to reduce the overall tax rate to $9.05 per thousand dollars of assessed property value. Per RSA 75:8-a, the State of New Hampshire requires that each town conduct a town-wide reappraisal of property so that assessments are at full and true value at least every five years. 2024 was Sandwich’s 5-year town-wide revaluation. There are four components of the tax rate: Municipal, Local School (Inter-lakes School District), County, and State Education. The Selectmen’s decisions only impact the municipal portion of the tax rate. Tax bills have been mailed with a due date of 30 days from the date of mailing. The Town Clerk gladly accepts prepayments toward taxes if anyone wants to pay in advance! In response to a request to the Selectmen for information regarding the increase in property values, additional reports will be added to the website (Forms and Documents/Property Assessments – Final Values and Reports). The trustees had hoped to share better news; however, the steeple had to be taken down this fall due to extensive rot in the support timbers and in the base of the steeple just above the bell. It was deemed a serious safety issue and immediate removal was recommended. The base of the steeple has been capped and secured for winter/spring to protect it from further damage. The problem had developed over a long period of time with no visible evidence of any deterioration in the support timbers until we started our preservation and restoration project on that section of the steeple this past spring. It was a blessing our contractor, Tony Hibbard (New England Church Restorations) made the discovery before serious damage occurred. Rest assured; our steeple will be restored to its former grace next year. We will continue to keep you posted on our progress. At present, the trustees are developing a fundraising plan for this unexpected development in our ongoing Bell Tower Preservation and Restoration Project.
