A Look Back Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Grab your favorite beverage, sit back and enjoy! Here is an excerpt; you can find more on the website at www.sandwichhistorical.org. October 26, 1926: (From a longer article covering the whole Fair) “What might be said of the Midway would fill this whole issue of the Sandwich Reporter and that would be unfair. On the midway one deals with fakirs, but by no means does that mean fakes. As a rule, they play the game square (as square as one expects) and stand ever ready to aid one of his kind who may have met with hard luck. The wrestlers, blanket men, corn and ring games, hot dogs, fortune tellers all were there and while we hear it intimated that they carry away our money we know they leave a part for rent of the grounds, for nearly a fourth part of the Fair receipts come from them. The livelier the midway, the livelier the fair. The best result of the fair is that nothing was stolen, and no one was injured as far as the fair officials learned. The nearest loss of human life was when a trained monkey escaped from its owner and attempted to cross the street was run over by a passing auto.” Willow Pond Antiques and Goods Located at 12 main Street, Center Sandwich, Willow Pond features unique whimsical antiques and goods. Coffee will be ready at 11:30! Woodshare Project The Sandwich Woodshare project is entering its 15th year of dispensing firewood to 'those who would otherwise be cold'. Thank you for supporting this program. As we get ready to fire up our woodstoves for the coming season, here are a couple of reminders about Woodshare protocols: You must have a voucher to take firewood from our storage depot at the transfer station. We lost a lot of our inventory last season to folks who took wood without documentation. Although Woodshare clients aren't means-tested, the program is primarily designed to fill supply gaps for those folks who may fall short of the resources needed to keep warm. We're an all-volunteer working group that relies on wood donations to fuel our operation and we're not set up to give firewood away to those who can normally afford to buy their own. If you need wood, stop by the town hall and ask for a voucher. Please keep in mind that we rely on wood donations (log length, rounds or split wood) to maintain our inventory. Kindly contact the Woodshare Coordinator if you'd like to drop off wood at our depot. If you don't have the means to deliver your wood donation to our depot, please contact us for a pick-up. That said, we're all set on wood supplies for the coming season. Let us know if you'd like to join the list of volunteers who help process and/or deliver firewood. We can always use more hands! Right now we're in search of folks who can lend us a log splitter for our upcoming fall work sessions..... And a word about pallets: You don't need permission to drop off - or pick up - any pallets stored at our depot. For drop-offs, the pallets should be in perfect shape (no missing parts or rotten wood). Sandwich Transfer Station 2023-2024 facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station (and swimming facilities). Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box. Transfer Station use is strictly prohibited for vehicles without stickers/passes (even for longtime residents!). Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors! Selectmen’s Update At the October 7 meeting, the selectboard noted with gratitude continuing contributions to the Remick Park Revitalization fund, which will provide an update to the park including a playground. The Parks and Recreation and Highway Departments are collaborating on site work, and playground equipment will be installed soon. The selectmen also discussed Fourth of July Fireworks. Sandwich has had a long history of hosting fireworks on July 3, but the cost is becoming prohibitive. A minimum of $20,000 is required to book fireworks for July 3. For July 2, the minimum for 2025 will be $8,500 and will increase in 2026. The board is looking for public input, and are willing to consider other alternatives to a fireworks display.
