The Sandwich Range glows bright-white in morning sunlight with the new snowfall. Wispy clouds above mirror the landscape below. Little by little, the days grow longer, and sunshine invites us to come out and play.
In the words of Thoreau, from ‘A Winter Walk’:
We sleep, and at length awake to the still reality of a winter morning. The snow lies warm as cotton or down upon the window-sill; the broadened sash and frosted panes admit a dim and private light, which enhances the snug cheer within. The stillness of the morning is impressive.

The Library is offering a wellness series for youth and families over the next few Saturdays: (10:30 am at the Samuel Wentworth Library)
2/8/25 Breathwork and meditation: Learn simple breathing and meditation techniques to calm your mind and settle into your body helping to develop greater self-awareness, self-regulation, and decreased stress.
2/15/25 Yoga Game Interactive Game: for children and families to improve balance, strength, endurance, and flexibility.
2/22/25 Bath Bombs: They can help soothe sore muscles, relieve tension, and promote overall relaxation.


Puzzle and Game Sale

The Friends of the Library have an abundance of jigsaw puzzles and games for sale in the Library’s Community Room. One week only. Perfect entertainment for extended in-house hours of mid-winter. Pick up a few to work on solo or gather with a group and make it an event. February 1 through February 7. Everything $2.00. International Nights

The Doris L. Benz Community Center is again hosting three International Nights this January, February & March. We’ve got a marvelous travel lineup: a trip down under to New Zealand, then East to Azerbaijan, Georgia & Armenia, and finally a taste of Europe with Sicily. 
Tickets include a 3-course dinner and the presentation. The menu is inspired by the cuisine of the country. As usual, it’s BYO. Cost is $35/person. All events start at 5:30 pm with doors opening at 5 pm. Details for tickets are below.
The  Friday, February 21 International dinner is sold out, but you still have one more opportunity to take part in the 2025 International night series.

Winter Artist Lecture Series

For the February Artist in the Lecture series, Sandwich Home Industries welcomes Jennifer Clifford- Master Baker and owner of The Boro Bakery and Café in Moultonborough, NH.
The event will take place Sunday, February 16, 2025, 2:00 p.m. at The Byers-Holtzman Barn, 224 College Road, Center Harbor NH.
Jennifer Clifford grew up in Moultonborough, NH, and started working in a bakery at the age of 16 starting to learn the craft of baking from Donna Love and later from Chef Scott Ouellette. When the Cup and Crumb opened in Moultonborough, Jen was hired as the head baker. She went on to become a baker on the Food TV Holiday Baking Championship and made it to the semifinals with her outstanding skills and creativity. For filling a lifelong dream, Jennifer returned to Moultonborough and opened The Boro Baking Co. Now in its third year, The Boro is the place in town for amazing pastries, cakes, and other baked goods. Come and hear Jenn share her story, her history, and her experiences, and get to taste some of her creations!

~February 17, 1927:  Quimby School Notes – The officials of Quimby School are planning to give a free poultry course for the adults of the community (women as well as men). It will be given at the Quimby Shop for six nights, two hours per night, the first week in March. Fourteen men and women are already signed up for the course. Plans are made for a social good time along with the work of the course. If you would like to attend notify Mr. Clark, headmaster.
~Domestic Arts III and IV – The girls of this course have just finished booklets on the study of Leisure Time and Conversation. They are now sewing on various things. Three of them are making wool jersey dresses, Frances Martin, Lena Thompson and Edna Burrows. Frances Pierce has nearly completed the silk dress which she has been making; also Rosalie Quimby has nearly completed a sport skirt. The girls would like to have anyone who would like to see them at work visit the Quimby Cottage any time from 2:30 to 4 o’clock in the afternoon.

Wonalancet Stargazing

The Chocorua Lake Conservancy is hosting “Stars and Stories,” on Tuesday, February 25, from 7:00 PM till 8:30 PM. Come learn about the constellations in the winter night sky and some of the stories we tell about them, in Wonalancet with storyteller and teacher Matrt Krug: Visit https://www.chocorualake.org/events/2025/2/25/stories-stars to register.


Cross-country Skiing

Sandwich has several options for cross-country skiing, weather permitting. First, the prolonged period of below freezing temperatures has produced thick ice on the lakes. At Little Squam, there is a plowed path to and from Walter’s Basin, but skiers have wide open snow. Ashland Town Beach on River Street is a good place to start. Just dress warmly! Some are also skiing on Squam near the Sandwich town beach. Snowmobile tracks make it fairly easy to navigate.
If you’d rather stay on land, there is an ungroomed series of trails called Emerson Preserve in North Sandwich. Emerson Preserve is located on 113A Chase Rd. about 8 miles from the center of town. There is a small parking area on the left just after 364 Chase Road. Look for the XC skier sign on the tree.
Additionally, the Town’s Rec. department grooms trails in the Sandwich Fairgrounds, more information below.
Finally, a wonderful place to explore on skis or snowshoes is at Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods located at 740 Mt Israel Road.


Ski Trails in Fairgrounds

From the Sandwich Parks and Recreation Director, Ole Anderson: The Nordic ski trails in the center are open for use. We want to thank the Sandwich Fair Association for their support for these trails. You are all more than welcome, and encouraged, to use the trails at any point. This trail system is used by SCS Nordic program 1:15-2:20 on Tuesdays, the Sandwich Parks and Rec Nordic Program on Saturdays, and also used by the Inter-Lakes Nordic ski team on several afternoons a week. It is possible the trails will be busy on a weekday afternoon, but by no means closed, during these Inter-lakes practices. 
The trails will be entirely closed for Ski races Monday 2/17 all day.
These are first and foremost groomed trails for skiers. Please keep your foot traffic to the edge of the groomed area. Footprints through the groomed area can severely and dangerously impact the terrain for the skiers. These trails are not for sledding, please do not sled or allow your children to sled on the trails. If you do take your dog, please pick up their poop. Not doing so is unacceptable anywhere and our groomed Nordic ski trails are no exception.

State Championship Ski Race

This year the Middle School Championship race will be held in downtown Sandwich on Monday, February 17th. This is a huge community event celebrating Nordic skiing in the state of NH and we hope that you all can make it!
As part of the event, Inter Lakes Nordic provides a “Nordic Cafe" for all racers and families who come to the event (about 500+people). Most participants don’t bring their own food because we have historically provided so many delicious options. This is the only fundraiser for our HS and MS teams, with funds raised going directly to purchasing/reducing the costs of hats, jackets and skis among other things.
There are a few ways that we need support at this event: donations of food for the Nordic Cafe, volunteers at the Nordic Cafe, and volunteers for the running of the event. Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods

Grab your XC skis or snowshoes and join us outside for a refreshing day in nature. Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods is open to adventurous cross-country skiers and snowshoers from dawn until dusk every day. Break trail as you make your way through the sparkling sanctuary forest. Glike out into the bright sunshine of the fields that overlook Teacup Lake and take in the view. Check the CSVW Website Trails page https://www.chapmansanctuaryvisnywoods.com/, for trail conditions, what to bring and winter trail etiquette. Parking area is plowed with plenty of space. Free to the public every day. River Trail is Snowshoe only. Please sign in at the Visitor’s Kiosk. Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods is located at 740 Mt Israel Road, Sandwich.


Corner House Restaurant

Winter specials are back! Every week, we'll be dishing up something delicious made with fresh, local ingredients. Tuesday is Burger Night. Get a delicious burger and fries for just $10.00. Corner House has new expanded hours. They are now open on both Saturdays and Sundays from 12 pm to 10 pm.

Valentine’s Dance

Announcing the “We ❤️ Sandwich” fund-raiser contradance at Sandwich Town Hall. Valentine's Day, Friday February 14th; 6:30 to 8pm. This is an all-ages contradance, sponsored by the Sandwich Jam, to raise money for the town hall’s upright piano, tuning and repairs if needed. And if you don’t dance, come out to hear live traditional music and watch your neighbors weave and flow to New England dance tunes! Donation $4 per person, children under 10 are free. Famed caller Jacqueline Laufman is leading the merriment; all dances are simple and will be explained. Children are welcome to attend with an adult.

Music Jam

Hello, beginner to intermediate musicians. This is a reminder that we gather every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm at the Sandwich town hall for a free, fun-filled music jam. We play traditional, Celtic, oldtime, folk, and Americana tunes at a slow to moderate tempo. Bring your hobby out and start playing with others! It’s fun and inclusive. Right now, we have fiddles, penny whistle, flute, guitars, mandolin, acoustic bass, piano, concertina, and an autoharp!! Sheet music available. Plenty of parking, and an elevator lift if needed. Friends and Fiber

If music isn’t your thing, maybe yarn is! Every Wednesday evening, 6:00 – 8:30 pm, Library Community Room: Friends and Fiber Group: All abilities and ages of fiber enthusiasts (and those wanting to learn or just visit) are welcome to attend. Come with your knitting, crocheting, spinning, felting, rug hooking, embroidery, sewing or other fiber arts-related or hand-held project to work on. There is no charge and the group is casual and welcoming. While there is no formal instruction, if you have a question about your project, there is usually someone in attendance who can provide assistance. Experience is that the group is likely to gather on the off weeks as well as everyone enjoys the company and sharing of ideas. Sandwich Creamery

2 Maple Ridge Road, Sandwich. Self-serve, locally made ice cream and cheese. As for some of the cheese you will be seeing next year, one has already made a brief appearance, but will now be seen with more consistency: the “Olde English” cheddar. What makes the Olde English so distinct is the fact that we have allowed for a rind to grow. This year we will be moving the Olde English into our older round molds and cloth binding them, closer to the traditional style of its making. This will allow for a richer, more consistent growth of the rind and better flavor. Open from 9 am until 9 pm daily.

Part-time Community Nurse Position Available

The Board of the Sandwich Community Nurse Association is now hiring a part-time Community Nurse to provide nursing services to promote the health and wellness of the Sandwich residents. These services are provided free of charge to residents.
The focus is on home visits, teaching, coaching and integration of services as well as promotion of health for individuals, families and the community.
This is an independent position with hours of 10-15 per week.
Bachelors in Nursing preferred with an active NH RN license required. Working knowledge of health care laws and regulations (NH RN-Scope of Practice). Two plus years of experience in home visiting nursing preferred. Reliable vehicle a must.
Compensation commensurate with experience.

Senior Meals

Join the fun at our Wednesday lunch here in Sandwich! Sandwich senior meals take place on Wednesdays at noon at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Center Sandwich. Additionally, Moultonboro senior meals are held Monday through Thursday at the Moultonboro Community Center (formerly Old Lions Club) at 139 Old Route 109. All are welcome. Coffee will be ready at 11:30!
For those 60 years and older, meals are supported through local, state, and federal governments. Free will donations are most welcome.
The Moultonboro site chooses the menu and prepares it; food is delivered to Sandwich for serving.
Coffee is ready at 11:30. Desserts are usually set out by then; there is a good possibility one of our volunteers will arrive with a still-warm homemade sweet bread (banana and pumpkin come to mind). Fresh bouquets at each table.


Land Conservation Talk

Have you ever wondered what’s involved in putting your land into conservation and what the benefits might be? The Sandwich Conservation Commission invites you learn about the diverse options available for land conservation at a panel discussion to be held on Tuesday, February 25 at 7 p.m. at the Doris L. Benz Community Center, 18 Heard Road in Sandwich, N.H.
Representatives from two local Land Trusts who have worked with residents in the Lakes Region for decades will be on hand to offer their advice and answer your questions. A landowner who recently obtained an easement on his property will also offer his perspective on the process.

New facility stickers are available at the town hall for 2025-2026. Facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station. Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box.
Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!


2025 Proposed Budget Hearing

The Selectmen of the Town of Sandwich will hold a Public Hearing to review the 2025 proposed budget on Monday, February 10th, 2025 at 5:30 P.M at Sandwich Town Hall. If necessary, a second Public Hearing on the proposed 2025 budget will take place on Tuesday, February 18th, 2025 at 5:30 P.M. at the Sandwich Town Hall. The proposed budget will be available at www.sandwichnh.org under Forms & Documents no later than Wednesday, February 5th, 2024.


Town Elections

Sandwich’s Town Election (1st Session), takes place on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at the Town Hall. Polls open from 10am to 7pm.
The Town Meeting (2nd Session), will be on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, beginning at 6pm, at the Sandwich Central School.

In the Round

In the Round takes place Sundays at 8:45 – 10:30 am at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Sandwich.
In the Round, a community discussion group for the past 25 years, meets weekly in Sandwich. The topic is always thought-provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome.
