A Look Back Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Below is one excerpt. For more, visit https://www.sandwichhistorical.org/miscellany-and-mystery.html or visit sandwichhistorical.org. ~August 11, 1910: It is estimated that nearly $1500 damage was caused by washout in the highway during the severe storm of last week. ($1500 in 1910 would be roughly equivalent to $50,000 today. SHS ed.) ~August 9, 1934: On July 23rd and ancient Indian “dugout” was recovered from the depths of Bearcamp Pond, off its eastern shore by Master Edward Ball, a student, and Ben Bullard, camp counselor, both staying in Sandwich, NH. While engaged in bathing, its boat-like outline some days ago caught the keen attention of Master Ball and much diving was necessary for confirmation. Found to be loaded with stones and additionally wedged under a submerged, water logged tree, dislodgement was difficult. When relieved of its burden of years, the craft rose, was caulked with makeshift material and in spite of its long immersion actually carried the boys across the lake with good buoyancy. (Subsequent carbon dating puts the age of the dugout in the late 18thIt is still a remarkable piece of history and craftsmanship and can be viewed at the Marston House. SHS ed.) Live Owl Program Marcia and Mark Wilson, owl experts, will introduce you to live owls UP CLOSE as they share their knowledge and insights. This entertaining and educational presentation begins with Mark’s interactive slide program featuring some of his finest owl photography. After much anticipation, Marcia brings the owls out one by one. Each bird is safely perched on her glove as she walks into the audience, providing intimate views of these secretive birds of prey. Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Arts and Crafts Building in the Sandwich Fairgrounds, hosted by Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods and sponsored by the Sandwich Animal Hospital. Fiddler on the Roof Several Sandwich residents will be performing in Fiddler on the Roof this weekend. The timeless Tony Award-winning tale of Tevye the Dairyman and his family is brought to life on the Colonial Theater stage, Main Street, Laconia, in a stirring musical production. The universal themes of family and tradition cut across barriers of race, religion, class and nationality to strike a chord of recognition in all human beings. Fiddler is a classic for a reason, and exceedingly relevant in today’s polarizing world. Come share the love, laughter, humanity and tears with the Powerhouse Theatre Collaborative family. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors! Styrofoam Collection From Mark Longly of the Sandwich Recycling Group: Styrofoam collection at the Sandwich transfer station has been going well and our weekly deliveries to the Gilford densifier have resulted in savings from reduced hauling fees as well as lower emissions and ash from incineration. In addition to these benefits, the recycled material is used as feedstock in making insulation board, thereby replacing the need for virgin polymer in the construction process. Our hub location in Gilford, serving 12 towns, has diverted more than 88 40-yard containers from landfills or incinerators. However, there are three things you can do to make the task of preparing recycled Styrofoam for shipment easier for me and the equipment operators in Gilford: 1.) The material to be fed into the densifier's hopper must be broken down to less than 12" X 12" sized pieces. 2.) The Styrofoam must be free of contamination. Please clean any food scraps and remove all packaging, tape, cardboard, and labels. 3.) Polypropylene packaging cannot be densified. Expanded polypropylene is soft and flexible, whereas expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) is rigid and breakable.
