Poetry Night


April is poetry month, and local poets are celebrating at the Samuel H. Wentworth Library, 35 Main Street, Sandwich, NH 03227, on Tuesday, April 15 starting at 5 PM.  Readings from local poets will go until around 6:15. Please join us for this wonderful event.  Light refreshments will be served. Hosted by the Friends of the Samuel H. Wentworth Library.


Easter Egg Hunt


Please join the Sandwich Fire-Rescue Association at the Central Fire Station at 23 Wentworth Hill Road for our annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday April 19th at 10am sharp. We will have over 1000 eggs with candy and prizes scattered around the station and the neighboring Fairgrounds for our young friends and a special area for our youngest searchers. Bring a basket or container to carry your finds and join us for what is always a fun time.

Town Hall Clock Restoration Begins


Thanks to the Sandwich Selectboard and their budget committee, the Town Hall Clock is being restored. Also a special thank you to Doris Benz for her trust pledging the funds to our town to complete this project.
Resident Tod Campbell writes, “For all of us that get help and support from our Town staff, you know that they operate "like clockwork!"  We think it is fitting that we will soon have a working clock above them!” Work began last week, as the crew removed a minute hand in order to have a pattern to make a new one. Look for updates as the project continues.


Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods


Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods is located at 740 Mt Israel Road in picturesque Sandwich, New Hampshire. There is plenty of free parking and room to prepare yourself for a lovely day on the trails.

Mud Season Trail Update


Each year the Squam Lakes Association, in conjunction with landowners who allow public access to their land, temporarily closes sensitive trails around Squam. As the snow melts, muddy conditions force hikers to move off the trails and onto the softer ground on the side. This loosens rocks, weakens trees, and creates erosion. In order to protect the network, please avoid hiking on closed trails until we reopen them when conditions dry up!
The following trails are CLOSED as of 3/21:
Rattlesnake network, Squam Range, Mt. Morgan Trail, Mt. Percival Trail, Crawford Ridgepole Trail, and Cotton Mountain Trail.
Here are some alternative hikes that are OPEN while you wait:
Belknap Woods, Whitten Woods, Chamberlain Reynolds Memorial Forest, Red Hill, Castle in the Clouds.




Mountain Side Sauna, Opening Day


Saturday, April 19th at 3pm.
Donation based event (if you can give more, please do to help in holding those who cannot). Pay upon arrival.
Join in on a day of Connection, Sauna and Cold Plunging in North Sandwich at Sacred Nectar Sanctuary! Sacred Nectar Sanctuary sits on 290 acres at the base of Mt. Whiteface and provides an immersed nature experience for those desiring to reconnect back with themselves and nature.The Sauna will be hot at 3pm. Sauna and plunging will be guided and held by Polly Mahoney & Annie Provenzano from our neighboring town, Tamworth. For Polly and Annie, cold and heat are spiritual teachers. Their adventures in the world of intense temperature led them to share their passion for connecting with nature in new ways. They formed the Tamworth Otters, a local cold water dipping group and love supporting others as they get to know these elements on their own terms. Starting May, they will be hosting Sauna at Sacred Nectar on the 2nd Sunday of every month.
This is a family friendly event! We will have a fire crackling, inviting all who wish to sit around it and be in good conversation. Please bring snacks/drinks for sharing. Children are welcome to run and play on the land. We have short and easy hiking trails available for exploring on the main grounds.
We invite everyone to bring drums, rattles, songs, prayers, stories and whatever else calls to your heart to share during our time together.

May Contradance


Coming in May, another contradance in Sandwich with your favorite Sandwich Jam, with caller Jacqueline! Saturday, May 3, starting at 6:30 pm. This is a family dance for all ages. At the Sandwich Town Hall, with a suggested donation of $4.00 per person, under 12 free. And, folks can come and sit to just listen, dancing not required. All dances taught – easy and fun moves. Banjo Gathering

Music Jam


Hello, beginner to intermediate musicians. This is a reminder that we gather every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm at the Sandwich town hall for a free, fun-filled music jam. We play traditional, Celtic, oldtime, folk, and Americana tunes at a slow to moderate tempo. Bring your hobby out and start playing with others! It’s fun and inclusive. Right now, we have fiddles, penny whistle, flute, guitars, mandolin, acoustic bass, piano, concertina, and an autoharp!! Sheet music available. Plenty of parking, and an elevator lift if needed. Friends and Fiber


If music isn’t your thing, maybe yarn is! Every Wednesday evening, 6:00 – 8:30 pm, Library Community Room: Friends and Fiber Group: All abilities and ages of fiber enthusiasts (and those wanting to learn or just visit) are welcome to attend. Come with your knitting, crocheting, spinning, felting, rug hooking, embroidery, sewing or other fiber arts-related or hand-held project to work on. There is no charge and the group is casual and welcoming. While there is no formal instruction, if you have a question about your project, there is usually someone in attendance who can provide assistance. Experience is that the group is likely to gather on the off weeks as well as everyone enjoys the company and sharing of ideas. March Weather Summary


One of our weather watchers, Rod W., reports on Sandwich’s weather for March: The average high temperature for March was 43.7° and the low 27.1°. This is 4.1° above normal. The warmest day was 58° on the 19th and the lowest 0° on the 3rd.
Total snowfall was 14.2” which is 4.1” below normal. Total precipitation was 4.92” which is 0.92” above normal.
The highest wind gust observed was 39 mph on the1st of the month.


A Look Back


Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944).  Here are some samples. ~April 10, 1890: Preston and Sherman Quimby recently lost their best Ashire cow, which had a record of 24 quarts of milk per day.
Squam Lake – Clarence Bryant is making a fine lot of maple sugar on the Smith place.
The birds are singing and hopping about on the lawn; the brooks have broken away from their icy fastenings and there is music in the air.
The lake is at high water mark.
Miss Mabel Smith lost her pocketbook the 2nd. Inst., somewhere between the Post Office and John Cotton’s. It contained a one hundred and fifty dollar note, a five dollar bill and some small change. We hope the person who finds it will be kind enough to return it to its owner.

Bookshop Open


The Bookshop at 25 Grove Street is open most Saturdays, from 10 AM until 5 PM. Look for baked banana bread, Irish soda bread, hermits, and 5 varieties of shortbread. They offer items such as Scotch Irish Oatmeal Cake. John Perkins writes, “Anne and I first encountered this delicious breakfast food at the Downy flake Doughnut shop on Nantucket Island. The Downyflake served breakfasts on Nantucket for most of the twentieth century before the building was sadly lost in a fire. Many visitors to the Island remember the large tin doughnut which hung out over the sidewalk.” Stop by for Scottish shortbread, Anna's eggs and Swedish Ginger cookies. As always there is an excellent selection of books.


Sandwich Farmers Market Coming Soon


The Sandwich Farmers Market will have a fresh new feel this summer! Mark your calendars! The market will take place Wednesdays, 3pm – 6pm at the Village Green in Sandwich. 2025 Season Dates are weekly starting June 4th through September 10th. Mountain Breeze Farm specializes in fresh, local beef and pork, as well as maple syrup. Arbor Day Celebration


ReTreeUS is thrilled to announce their 3rd Annual Community Arbor Day Celebration! 
When: Saturday, April 26th, from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Where: ReTreeUS Nursery on Dow Road in Sandwich
Why: Every spring, ReTreeUS receives hundreds of bare-root fruit trees that need to be potted and cared for throughout the summer. These trees will eventually find homes in school and community orchards. This is no small task, which is why they’re calling on friends, family, and neighbors to lend a hand and make this possible.
This is a true community effort and wouldn't be possible without the support of volunteers and friends coming together to share in the work and the joy of the day.
Even if you’re unable to participate in the physical work of potting trees, there are plenty of ways to be involved,

Something Wild Farm


Richard’s latest blog from Something Wild Farm is out. Here’s an excerpt: “I don’t sleep in March. Between boiling and power company storm duty and spring fever waking me up after a long wintering phase, I’m a wild boy for about 31 days. I often find myself standing around aimlessly in April, when it catches up to me. Here I am. Huh? Where did all this maple syrup come from? How do I get rid of it? Sometimes I take shots of it to wake up. Cold, fresh sap is nature’s energy drink and maple syrup is the Monster version with all the sugar in it. Now that I think of it….Hey you, reader! Booty Family Farm


We will gladly fill any clean mason jars with maple syrup. Please put your name on each jar, a way to contact and a preference of grade. Feel free to reach out with any questions. We currently have 2025 syrup for sale in the sugarhouse and it looks like a great week for making more! Visitors always welcome!

Tamwich Performers Circle


Calling all storytellers, poets, musicians, and other performers from Sandwich, Tamworth, and the surrounding area from the mountains to the lakes. Come together to share stories, poems, monologues, and music. Listeners are welcome!

Tamworth Community Food Center Welcomes You


If you or someone you know is in a position where access to food would be of help, please call the number provided. There are resources. The primary goal of the Tamworth Community Food Center is addressing hunger for those in need, serving the communities of Tamworth and Sandwich, NH. Our organization’s volunteers are trained and well-informed, knowing the value of awareness, action, and the effects of hunger. We are dedicated to providing fresh and nutritious food to people and families who may go without it. Our volunteers are devoted to understanding the significance and impact of community outreach. Donations from individuals, local organizations, businesses, and the towns provide stability and support, addressing the essentials of our citizens via sustainable solutions. It is our goal to tackle both short and long-term needs.

Senior Meals


Join the fun at our Wednesday lunch here in Sandwich! Sandwich senior meals take place on Wednesdays at noon at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Center Sandwich. Additionally, Moultonboro senior meals are held Monday through Thursday at the Moultonboro Community Center (formerly the Lions Club) at 139 Old Route 109. All are welcome.
Free will donations are most welcome.
The Moultonboro site chooses the menu and prepares it; food is delivered to Sandwich for serving.
Coffee is ready at 11:30. Desserts are usually set out by then; there is a good possibility one of our volunteers will arrive with a still-warm homemade sweet bread (banana and pumpkin come to mind). Call the Moultonboro site at 603-476-5110 for takeout orders or to sign up for home delivery.


School District Initiative


Center Harbor, Meredith, and Sandwich students, parents, guardians, community members, staff, and school board members are invited to join in updating and evolving the shared vision for the future of the Inter-Lakes District schools. The process will be repeated across three different locations, and you are welcome to attend the one that works best for you. Each event will offer the same experience and opportunity for input. Choose the one most convenient for you:
April 3, Meredith Location – Inter-Lakes Middle High School, Cafeteria, 6:00 pm – 7:30.
April 10 – Center Harbor Location, Center Harbor Town Hall, Cary Mead Meeting Room, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.
April 15 – Sandwich Location – Sandwich Central School, Cafeteria, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.
Childcare will be provided at each event. To help prepare, call 603-279-7947 to RSVP. Together we can strengthen our Inter-Lakes Community.


Older Singers Needed


Do you like to sing? Are you OVER 60?  Do you have a sense of humor? If so, we need you! This summer The Yeoman’s Fund for the Arts will once again present Elderville, an operetta in the G & S tradition, featuring one youngish couple and a large chorus of elderly folks.  The story and new song lyrics were written in 2019, but the musical score will be familiar, as it is based on the beloved tunes composed by Arthur Sullivan.
Our even Older Elderville, will be performed on the Sandwich Town Hall Stage this summer: Performance Dates: July 10, 11 and 12 (matinee), July 18, 19, and 20 (matinee)    
There are parts for a wide variety of singers.  Don’t let a lack of experience stop you!  There will be simple chorus parts, as well as opportunities for more experienced singers to do solos, quartets and trios.  There are some speaking roles as well. If you are interested in participating, please contact Ellen Farnum: 986-6620 or email ellenlynnfarnum@gmail.


Fire Permits Required


Fire Permits are now required for all outside burning. With a Fire Permit you may burn brush up to 5 inches in diameter between 5pm and 9am. No debris or painted or treated wood and no pressure treated lumber. 
Fire Permits may be obtained at the Fire Station at 23 Wentworth Hill Road or at Town Hall during regular business hours or from the Warden. If you desire a seasonal permit for cooking or campfires, contact the Forest Fire Warden Jim Mykland at 603-387-7104.


Sandwich Transfer Station


New facility stickers are available at the town hall for 2025-2026. Facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station. Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box.
Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!

Dog Licenses Due


Dog licenses for 2025 are available for purchase in the Town Clerk’s Office (open Tuesday and Thursday, 8 am to 5:30 pm.) NH law requires all dogs to be licensed at four months of age, and thereafter, the licenses must be renewed annually by April 30. The license period is May 1 through April 30. The town Clerk must have proof of a valid rabies vaccination before a license may be issued. Local veterinarians are required to send rabies certificates to town clerks.
Dog fees can be combined with other Town Clerk transactions. If you have moved or no longer have your dog, please notify the Town Clerk’s Office at 603-284-7113 or email Steve at [email protected].


Rabies Clinic


Moultonborough’s Town Clerk has organized a Rabies Clinic. All neighboring towns are invited.
 The NH Humane Society will be on site at Moultonborough Town Hall (6 Holland Street – in the same parking lot as the library, near the Old Country Store) from 11 am – 3 pm on Saturday, April 19th. It’s drop-in—no appointments necessary but signing up ahead of time via the link on the poster will help the Humane Society with their paperwork (link:  https://www.nhhumane.org/bestfriend, click on Moultonborough to register).


Scholarships Available


The Alfred Quimby Trust and the Doris L. Benz Trust both provide scholarships to Sandwich residents. These scholarships each have distinct criteria and processes.
The Doris L. Benz Trust will consider scholarship awards to Sandwich residents who meet ALL of the following criteria:

Graduate and adult students or traditional students who did not graduate from Interlakes High School are not eligible for funding from the Doris L. Benz Trust.
The Alfred Quimby Trust sponsors scholarships for residents who do NOT qualify for the Doris L. Benz Trust. This means if the student is a Sandwich resident but did not graduate from Interlakes High School or is a graduate student or an adult student, they qualify for the Alfred Quimby Trust. The Alfred Quimby Trust and the Doris L. Benz Trust scholarships are managed through the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s online application.
The 2025 application deadline is Friday, April 11 at 5:00 pm ET. 
To access the online application and to receive further instructions, students should visit the Foundation’s website at www.nhcf.org and click on Apply for a scholarship.

Tax Exemption Deadline


There are several Tax exemptions and credits available in Sandwich, including the Elderly Exemption, the Blind Exemption, and Veteran’s Credits. Note: all applications for tax credits and exemptions are due to the Selectmen's Office by April 15th preceding the setting of the tax rate. 
~Elderly Exemption: Current Exemption Amount: varies depending on age - $20,000 (65-74 age), $30,000 (75-79 age), $50,000 (80+).

North Sandwich Friends


North Sandwich Friends Meeting invites friends and neighbors to join their weekly Meeting for Worship from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Sunday at the North Sandwich Meetinghouse (354 Quaker Whiteface Rd., N Sandwich, NH 03259).
Quakers, or “Friends,” have their roots in 17th century England. We have no explicit creed, nor does Quaker practice reflect a hierarchy among individuals. Believing that there is that of God in every person, Quakers welcome all who seek to join us in common spirit. Friends seek to live lives guided by six “testimonies”: Integrity, Simplicity, Peace, Equality, Community and Stewardship.
Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.


In the Round


In the Round takes place Sundays at 8:45 – 10:30 am at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Sandwich.
In the Round, a community discussion group for the past 25 years, meets weekly in Sandwich. The topic is always thought-provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome.
