February wraps up with warmer days and gradually melting snowbanks in Sandwich. Time to think of tapping trees and starting indoor seedlings.

Correction to Competing Solar Amendments Article


Last week we published an article relating to the upcoming vote on Sandwich’s zoning for commercial and residential solar arrays. There are two zoning ordinance amendments on the ballot which would regulate solar energy systems. The article in last week’s edition stated that voting ‘yes’ for both would cancel each other out; however, a vote for both articles is actually a vote for Article 3, because if both articles pass by majority vote, the more restrictive choice  (Article 3) takes effect.
The reason Sandwich needs an updated solar ordinance is that the town’s current zoning provisions, specifically for commercial arrays, are too tight to meet the state’s requirements. Sandwich’s current rules only allow commercial arrays in the small commercial district along Route 25. State law mandates that municipalities must encourage solar and other renewable energy development and must not unreasonably restrict renewable energy systems. Therefore, the town’s zoning ordinance must be updated to fully comply with the law.

International Nights


The Doris L. Benz Community Center is again hosting three International Nights this January, February & March. We’ve got a marvelous travel lineup: a trip down under to New Zealand, then East to Azerbaijan, Georgia & Armenia, and finally a taste of Europe with Sicily. 
Tickets include a 3-course dinner and the presentation. The menu is inspired by the cuisine of the country. As usual, it’s BYO. Cost is $35/person. All events start at 5:30 pm with doors opening at 5 pm. Details for tickets are below.

Sandwich Business Group


The Sandwich Business Group (SBG) meets monthly and their next meeting is on Monday morning, March 10th at 8 am at the Foothills Cafe. Current SBG projects include: updating their mission statement, setting up an Instagram workshop, social events to engage everyone in town this summer, ‘Meet our Members’ interviews, and Business-after-hours social times hosted by member businesses. SBG needs engaged members who want to join them and volunteer to take on some small tasks. Martha Nichols, SBG secretary writes, “We care about the economic stability of Sandwich businesses, and we are committed to giving back to our community. To join us means you have an opportunity to make a difference, think outside the box, network with other businesses, find out what you can do for your community, and engage with some pretty cool folks!”


Artist Lecture Program


The Center Sandwich Fine Craft Gallery’s Artist Lecture Program with Jennifer Clifford has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the Moultonborough Public Library meeting room. Sled Dog Fun Day


Postponed to March 16th. The Tamworth Outing Club, North Country Mushers, and Chinook Owners Assoc. Present the 2025 Sled Dog Fun Day racing and exhibition at the Chinook Trail Farm fields across from Wonalancet Chapel on 113A. Sunday, March 16 from 8 am till noon. Large teams arrive at 8 am, racing starts at 9. Dogs will make the 12-mile race and will be out of sight for some time until they come back into the field to finish the race. Chinook Owners Assoc. begins dog showcasing at 10 am. Show up early to catch all of the action. (Please leave your own dogs at home.)


Ski Trails in Fairgrounds


From the Sandwich Parks and Recreation Director, Ole Anderson: The Nordic ski trails in the center are open for use. We want to thank the Sandwich Fair Association for their support for these trails. You are all more than welcome, and encouraged, to use the trails at any point. This trail system is used by SCS Nordic program 1:15-2:20 on Tuesdays, the Sandwich Parks and Rec Nordic Program on Saturdays, and also used by the Inter-Lakes Nordic ski team on several afternoons a week. It is possible the trails will be busy on a weekday afternoon, but by no means closed, during these Inter-lakes practices. 
These are first and foremost groomed trails for skiers. Please keep your foot traffic to the edge of the groomed area. Footprints through the groomed area can severely and dangerously impact the terrain for the skiers. These trails are not for sledding, please do not sled or allow your children to sled on the trails. If you do take your dog, please pick up their poop. Not doing so is unacceptable anywhere and our groomed Nordic ski trails are no exception.

Nordic Skiers’ Thank-You


On Wednesday, February 19 more than 200 skiers from across the state gathered at the Sandwich Fairgrounds for the Middle School Nordic Sate Championship race. It was an amazing day of racing. The people of Sandwich offered incredible support by making delicious food and donating their time and encouragement. A big thank-you also to the Sandwich Fair Association. This event brings together families from across New Hampshire to build community, be active, and celebrate the outdoors. Rachel Bartlett writes, “I am honored to be part of it and we are so grateful for your continued support!”   


Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods


Gear up and get ready for some beautiful XC skiing and snowshoeing at Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods!
Trustees and Members have been out on the pristine, wintry landscape at the sanctuary and reports are that the snowy forest is gorgeous! Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods is located at 740 Mt Israel Road in picturesque Sandwich, New Hampshire.  There is plenty of free parking and room to prepare yourself for a lovely February day on the trails.

Foothills Café and Curio


Upcoming special events at the Foothills:
Off The Dock Players Production of Sharr White’s, The Other Place. This will be a deep and unique theater experience. The Foothills is offering a Dinner Theater option on Friday, Feb 28 and Saturday Mar 1. Dinner theater includes a 3-course prix fixe meal before the show and your ticket to the show for $58.  The show will run on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights for 2 weeks—2/20, 2/21 and 2/22, then 2/27, 2/28 and 3/1. The Dinner Theater option is only on 2/28 and 3/1, but you can also just see the show on those nights too. All tickets and ticket options can be purchased on the Off The Dock Players Website.

Off the Dock Players presents ‘The Other Place’


Local theater group Off The Dock Players has been busy rehearsing a new play which opened production on Thursday, February 20, 2025 at 7pm at the Town Hall in Sandwich. Remaining shows are on 2/27, 2/28, and 3/1, all at 7pm.
The Other Place by Sharr White: A mystery unravels as contradictory evidence, blurred truth, and fragmented memories collide in a cottage on the windswept shores of Cape Cod.  Main character Juliana Smithton's journey unfolds as she confronts a reality that becomes impossible to ignore. 
Join us for the provocative and poignant production starring Rebecca Cole, Abe Garon, Marena Harris, Parker Hansen, and Ashley Bullard; directed by Marena Harris and Nancy Blaine.

Banjo Gathering

Music Jam


Hello, beginner to intermediate musicians. This is a reminder that we gather every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm at the Sandwich town hall for a free, fun-filled music jam. We play traditional, Celtic, oldtime, folk, and Americana tunes at a slow to moderate tempo. Bring your hobby out and start playing with others! It’s fun and inclusive. Right now, we have fiddles, penny whistle, flute, guitars, mandolin, acoustic bass, piano, concertina, and an autoharp!! Sheet music available. Plenty of parking, and an elevator lift if needed. Friends and Fiber


If music isn’t your thing, maybe yarn is! Every Wednesday evening, 6:00 – 8:30 pm, Library Community Room: Friends and Fiber Group: All abilities and ages of fiber enthusiasts (and those wanting to learn or just visit) are welcome to attend. Come with your knitting, crocheting, spinning, felting, rug hooking, embroidery, sewing or other fiber arts-related or hand-held project to work on. There is no charge and the group is casual and welcoming. While there is no formal instruction, if you have a question about your project, there is usually someone in attendance who can provide assistance. Experience is that the group is likely to gather on the off weeks as well as everyone enjoys the company and sharing of ideas. Sandwich Woman’s Club Meeting


The Sandwich Woman’s Club (for those who are sticklers about spelling and grammar, the Club’s title has been spelled this way since its inception, and we value our history!)  will be holding its first meeting of 2025 on Thursday, March 6 at 4:30 pm at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Sandwich. 
The Sandwich Woman’s Club is a social club for women of all ages, organized in 1928. We host three traditional events each year: 
~The Community Christmas Party is held in December, where resident children celebrate the holiday with a visit from Santa, gifts purchased by the Club, and homemade goodies. 
~An annual Luncheon on the Green, prepared and staffed by Club members, and which funds the Christmas party, is held during Old Home Week in August. 
~A Raffle is held the same day as the Luncheon – again organized by Club members. The proceeds of the Raffle provide Book and Supply money to high school graduates from Sandwich who are furthering their education after high school. 
Working together to help our community through these three activities is the tie that has bound Sandwich Woman’s Club members of all ages and stations together for generations. 
The Club has four meetings each year which are primarily focused on planning our events. Social activities and speakers are often added according to member interest. It is hoped that members will attend at least two meetings, and/or contribute to at least one of the three traditional events. Dues are currently $10/year. 
We love new members! If you’d like to know more about us, please join us for this meeting - no commitment - all women of Sandwich, or who have ties to Sandwich, are invited!

Bookshop Open


The Bookshop at 25 Grove Street is open most Saturdays, from 10 AM until 5 PM. They offer items such as Scotch Irish Oatmeal Cake. John Perkins writes, “Anne and I first encountered this delicious breakfast food at the Downy flake Doughnut shop on Nantucket Island. The Downyflake served breakfasts on Nantucket for most of the twentieth century before the building was sadly lost in a fire.  Many visitors to the Island remember the large tin doughnut which hung out over the sidewalk.” Stop by for Scottish shortbread, Anna's eggs and Swedish Ginger cookies. As always there is an excellent selection of books.

Soup Dinner Fundraiser


Mount Washington Valley Eaters and Growers presents another Farm to Bowl Food for All! This event takes place in two seatings (5:15 pm, and 6:30 pm) on Monday March 24th at the Local Grocer in Conway. At this unique dining experience, you get to pick out a handmade pottery bowl (to keep) and fill with a delicious homemade soup, served with bread from Old Village bakery. The bowls have been generously donated by local potters. Grab and Go option also available. All proceeds go to the Food for All Local Access Fund. Tickets are $45.00. Mt. Washington Valley Eaters and Growers’ mission is to nourish the community by increasing access to locally grown foods while strengthening relationships with farmers, families, and the land. Tamworth Community Food Center Welcomes You

The primary goal of the Tamworth Community Food Center is addressing hunger for those in need, serving the communities of Tamworth and Sandwich, NH. Our organization’s volunteers are trained and well-informed, knowing the value of awareness, action, and the effects of hunger. We are dedicated to providing fresh and nutritious food to people and families who may go without it. Our volunteers are devoted to understanding the significance and impact of community outreach. Donations from individuals, local organizations, businesses, and the towns provide stability and support, addressing the essentials of our citizens via sustainable solutions. It is our goal to tackle both short and long-term needs.

Senior Meals


Join the fun at our Wednesday lunch here in Sandwich! Sandwich senior meals take place on Wednesdays at noon at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Center Sandwich. Additionally, Moultonboro senior meals are held Monday through Thursday at the Moultonboro Community Center (formerly Old Lions Club) at 139 Old Route 109. All are welcome. Coffee will be ready at 11:30!
For those 60 years and older, meals are supported through local, state, and federal governments. Free will donations are most welcome.
The Moultonboro site chooses the menu and prepares it; food is delivered to Sandwich for serving.
Coffee is ready at 11:30. Desserts are usually set out by then; there is a good possibility one of our volunteers will arrive with a still-warm homemade sweet bread (banana and pumpkin come to mind). Fresh bouquets at each table.


Scholarship for Sandwich Students


The Greater Ossipee Area Chamber of Commerce has a scholarship program for students, including those from Sandwich. The application is available on the Ossipee Valley website, https://www.ossipeevalley.org/scholarshipcommittee, along with qualification details (basically, you must reside in Freedom, Effingham, Madison, Sandwich, Tamworth or Ossipee and be a student attending post-secondary or technical school). We encourage students of all ages to apply. Scholarships are $1,000 each, and we distribute at least six scholarships per year.

Sandwich Transfer Station


New facility stickers are available at the town hall for 2025-2026. Facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station. Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box.
Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!


Notes from the Selectmen’s Office


As a reminder, you can sign up for tailored alerts (email or text notifications) at https://www.sandwichnh.org/enotify/index.php. Please let the Selectmen's Office know if you are having any issues with our alert system. 
It was a busy week as we gear up for 2025 Town Meeting. As a reminder, elections will be held on Tuesday, March 11th at Town Hall with the annual business session taking place the following evening (Wednesday, March 12th, 6 PM) at the Sandwich Central School. 
Sample ballots can be found on the town website, www.sandwichnh.org under “Departments, Town Clerk’s Office, Election and Voter Information, General Information.” We encourage the public to review zoning amendment information and sample ballots in advance of election day. Details regarding zoning amendments can be found on the town website also.
Budget information can be found at the town website under “Boards and Committees, Budget Advisory Committee, Budget Documents.” The town warrant will also be approved in the coming week and made available with the budget materials. A website notice will be posted when the 2024 Town Report is available. 


Town Warrant 2025


Articles 1, 2, and 3 on the Town Warrant will be decided by ballot on Tuesday, March 11 at Town Hall. Voting hours are 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. All other Articles contained in the Warrant will be considered at the Deliberative Session on Wednesday, March 12 at the Sandwich Central School, 6:00 PM.
Article 1: the election of town and cooperative school district officers.
Article 2: Articles 2 and 3 include amendments to the zoning ordinance covering the installation of residential and commercial solar ground-mounted arrays. Only Article 2 – amendments 1-4 as printed on the ballot – has been endorsed by the Planning Board. The Town’s current zoning provisions for commercial arrays are restrictive, allowing such arrays only in the very small commercial district along Route 25. State law says towns cannot unreasonably restrict renewable energy systems. Therefore, the zoning ordinance must be updated to fully comply with the law and protect Sandwich taxpayers from expensive litigation. Commercial array facilities of no more than 25 acres would be permitted only in the Rural Residential Village [but not the Historic District], and Commercial districts. They would require site plan review and approval, allowing the Planning Board to make sure each specific proposal fits the town’s character and includes the appropriate, effective year-round screening from all abutting properties and roads. Article 2 also allows residents to install residential arrays of up to 5,000 square feet with only a building permit, as allowed currently. The Planning Board believes Article 3 unreasonably restricts renewable energy systems and will not encourage the installation and use of solar energy systems in Sandwich.
ARTICLE 3: This article is a petitioned zoning amendment. Petitioners state, “the purposes of the petitioned amendments are to: encourage the installation and use of solar energy systems; fulfill the objectives of the 2011 Master Plan to protect the scenic beauty, small town rural character and historical landscape and appearance of Sandwich; prohibit large scale solar systems in the Groundwater Protection Overlay District; place reasonable limitations on the visibility of large scale solar systems; protect the interests and property values of abutters of future large scale solar systems; and regulate large scale solar systems through the Zoning Ordinance”.
Some topics to be decided in Articles 4 through 39: Town officer wages, funding for General Government, Police Department, Highway Department truck replacement, Ambulance contract, Fire Department, Metcalf Road culvert, Main Street sidewalks, (offset by Moses Hall Trust Fund), Highway Department generator, Transfer Station operating budget, Sewer commissioners’ operating expenses, Quimby Field maintenance and tennis court resurfacing (offset by Quimby Fund); Remick Park improvements; Groundskeeping; Town Forest Account; Conservation Commission programs, Library operating budget; Capital improvements such as Police Building replacement and Fire engine budget; Energy projects for improvements at town facilities; A solar array at the Transfer Station; Town Hall Clock repairs; Town Flags; Fireworks.

North Sandwich Friends


North Sandwich Friends Meeting invites friends and neighbors to join their weekly Meeting for Worship from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Sunday at the North Sandwich Meetinghouse (354 Quaker Whiteface Rd., N Sandwich, NH 03259).  
Quakers, or “Friends,” have their roots in 17th century England.  We have no explicit creed, nor does Quaker practice reflect a hierarchy among individuals.  Believing that there is that of God in every person, Quakers welcome all who seek to join us in common spirit.  Friends seek to live lives guided by six “testimonies”: Integrity, Simplicity, Peace, Equality, Community and Stewardship.
Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others.  We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so.  Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection.  After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.


In the Round


In the Round takes place Sundays at 8:45 – 10:30 am at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Sandwich.
In the Round, a community discussion group for the past 25 years, meets weekly in Sandwich. The topic is always thought-provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome.
