The trees have burst into color over the last week. Bright yellow, orange, red and  green covers the hills and valleys around Sandwich. It’s definitely jacket and sweater weather now. Hope you have a chance to get out and enjoy the beauty!

October 26 – Pumpkin Wall

2025 Fun Fair Facts

Trecia McEvoy of Sandwich writes: The photography exhibit had 320 entries in the OPEN division and 106 school entries this year! Fantastic and so many beautiful photos. It was quite impressive so I hope everyone had a chance to take a look at some point over the weekend. Once again we had amazing judges that we simply can't do without! One of them - a true professional, well known, local photographer - volunteered their time for a 3rd year in a row!
The Skillet Toss saw 59 competitors! While that's half of what we had in 2023 (127!), with the threat of a nor'easter, we'll take it!
The Keg Toss remained pretty consistent with its number of competitors at 41! The highest number of competitors to date was 58 in 2023. We must have had a perfect weather day in 2023! I do remember the crowd blocking most of the paths around the arena.
Speaking of crowds, what a hearty crowd of supporters we had this year! They were enthusiastic and loud and that makes the competition all that much more fun! So, thank you for coming to watch even if you don't compete. Not only does it fire up the competitors but the committee appreciates the effort on a chilly morning.
We had competitors from Oregon, NJ, Colorado, Ohio, Indiana and many NH towns but a shout out to the 20 competitors that call Sandwich home! You are our favorites and it makes us happy to see you year after year! Ms. Lipstick and Betty Backache - you know who you are! LOL
The winning distances were 53'3" for the Skillet (just a tad further than the Inaugural toss made by my 101 year old grandmother, Edna Burrows in 2010!) and 35'10" for the 10th annual Keg Toss.
That's a wrap for the 2025 Skillet and Keg Toss competitions and the Photography Exhibit at the best fair - The Sandwich Fair!

From Richard of Something Wild Farm: I'm currently sitting next to some fluffy baby chicks who are working hard to grow their little wings and stay awake for more than three minutes straight. Community Nurse Benefits Residents

Sandwich resident Richard Knox has offered some thoughts on the need for the new Sandwich Community Nurse Association, launched in March:
Among the 65 Sandwich clients Nurse Danielle Paquette-Horne followed in September, the leading reasons for her interventions were:
~Emotional support
~Assistance with symptom management
~Assistance with social risk factors such as food, housing, and transportation.
Some of the outcomes noted include reduced anxiety, improved understanding of medications, ability to remain at home, and connection to another provider.
“We are truly a community that wants to age in place,” says Cath Graham, board chair of the Sandwich Community Nurse Association. Danielle’s services are free, but the SCNA invites tax-deductible donations to keep this new community resource thriving. Send your checks to PO Box 603, Center Sandwich 03227.

Sandwich Transfer Station

Facility stickers are available at the town hall for 2025-2026. Facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station. Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box.
Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!

Thin Film Plastic Recycle Program Ends

The plastic Recycling 'Trex' Program (thin soft 'film plastics) at the Transfer Station has ended as of Columbus day weekend. We couldn't find a replacement volunteer. Of course the larger dumpster solid plastic recycling (including # 1, 2 & 7) will continue.
However, don’t stop the good habit of bringing this plastic to a Trex bin. You can bring it to Hannafords in Meredith (& most store locations). The bins out front to collect this plastic aren't always labeled Trex, but the manager stated that they are part of their program. There will be a large poster at transfer station
as a reminder to redirect your thin plastics.
Recycling is a very worthwhile endeavor if, indeed materials go to a better destination than landfill and Trex has created a near-perfect solution with plastic composite for building materials.
For any recycling program to work, however, is a community enterprise, depending on two things:
 1. Finding dedicated volunteers to run the program
 2. How compliant the participants are; we found about 3/4 of the plastics did not belong or were contaminated (as we all know, plastic is the most complicated material to recycle).
The good news is that many people in Sandwich did a great job in bringing clean, thin plastic to the Trex bins. Thanks to you and 2 1/2 years of volunteer time, Jim, Marin & Dwight saved the town close to 400 25 gal-size bags of soft, thin plastic from the trash dumpster (and loose in our environment) hundreds of years of breaking down into microplastics, possibly leaching into soil and water (some landfill containment is better than others). THANK YOU ALL!

North Sandwich Friends

North Sandwich Friends Meeting invites friends and neighbors to join their weekly Meeting for Worship from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Sunday at the North Sandwich Meetinghouse (354 Quaker Whiteface Rd., N Sandwich, NH 03259).
Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.
