Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods This is a beautiful time to hit the trails at Chapman Sanctuary and Visny woods as the seasons begin to change. Leaves on the trees are losing some of their green and starting to hint at their autumn colors. Apples are ripening just as berries are disappearing. Some vegetation is already defoliating, while mushrooms, fungi and mosses are having their moment in nature. As beautiful as any flower, these thrive all over the CSVW trails. Still there are plenty of native perennials blooming for the pollinators who are extra determined right now. Many birds have already begun the business of preparing for migration and some have already flown. Other species are busy taking advantage of the available seeds and nuts that are abundant on the sanctuary acreage. Leftover caterpillar nests and the remaining insects and fat frogs in the area are a great source of nutrition for birds and animals. A visit to CSVW is always a great way to enjoy the late summer & early autumn months. The trails are a cool and quiet place for hikers, birdwatchers, and all nature enthusiasts. Located at 740 Mt Israel Road in Center Sandwich, New Hampshire. CSVW is open FREE to the public every day from dawn until dusk with plenty of FREE parking. What you may be seeing in the water From the Squam Lakes Association: You may have noticed small, fuzzy, snowflake-like spheres floating in the water. This is Gloeotrichia echinulata (Gloeo), a species of cyanobacteria. Recent samples from community members and staff show counts between 500–2,500 cells/mL, with DES confirming similar levels. While these numbers are far below the recreational advisory threshold of 70,000 cells/mL, Gloeo can still be visible to the naked eye. Before swimming, boating, or letting pets in, check water conditions. Gloeo looks like tiny yellow-green specks below the surface. Light, scattered colonies generally indicate lower risk, while dense clouds or surface scums are a sign to stay out. Because wind and waves can shift colonies quickly, conditions may vary between shorelines and throughout the day.
