Questions Sandwich folks ponder this time of year: Will the driveway freeze solid before plowable snow falls? Will I have to chip ice out of my chickens’ watering bowls? Will the deer eat the remaining kale out in the field? Should I wear spikes on my shoes today? Should I run the woodstove today? What will I do in the cold, dark evening? For the answer to that last one, consider Trivia night at the Foothills on Thursday, or a cozy dinner with live music at Cornerhouse on Friday!

Exemplary Country Estates of NH Program

The Benz Center is pleased to present a NH Humanities to Go program 7:30 Thursday, Nov. 20:   Exemplary Country Estates of New Hampshire
Presenter: Cristina Ashjian
In the early 20th century, the New Hampshire Board of Agriculture launched a program to boost the rural economy and promote tourism through the sale of abandoned farms to summer residents. After introducing the country house movement, Cristina Ashjian focuses attention on some of the great country estates featured in the New Hampshire program between 1902 and 1913.
Which private estates were recognized as exemplary, and who were their owners? Using historic images and texts, Ashjian discusses well-known estates now open to the public such as The Fells on Lake Sunapee, The Rocks in Bethlehem, Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site in Cornish, and she includes local examples when possible.

Food Support for Carroll County

Due to the government shut-down, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) are suspended and November SNAP payments may be delayed or temporarily halted. About 75,000 New Hampshire households rely on these benefits, which bring millions of dollars into our state and local economy each month.
The state has announced a $2 million emergency plan to expand the New Hampshire Food Bank’s mobile pantry program and strengthen local food pantries. This will help fill some of the gap but will not replace normal SNAP benefits.
The Carroll County Food Access Network (CCFAN) wants to ensure that all people can access food during this time. Here are some ways you can find help or help your neighbors:

Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.
