Geology Walk and Talk October 25

The gang is back - Dan Tinkham, Fred Lavigne, Jim Mykland and Dan Reidy.  This dynamic team will take you on a tour of the Bennett Street area in North Sandwich, which will include fascinating and informative discussions of the geologic, natural and human histories of our town and how they connect to each other.
If you have not been able to participate in one of these educating walks, then please join us.  For those who have participated in the previous geology walks, we look forward to seeing you again.
If a fall walk/drive in our exceedingly scenic town is on your bucket list, join us as we will strive to stimulate your minds and deepen your Sandwich knowledge among like-minded friends and neighbors, then here are the details:
Who:  All are welcome!
What: Geology Walk and Talk in and around the Bennett Street area.
Where: We will gather at the Sandwich Historical Society’s Quimby Transportation Museum (next to Town Hall) at 9:45 AM and arrange carpooling as vehicle space is limited where we are going. We will leave the museum parking lot promptly at 10:00 AM and head to the McCrillis Trail parking area off Whiteface Intervale Road. For those who live closer to the Bennett Street area, please feel free to meet us at the McCrillis Trail Parking area at 10:15 AM where we will arrange carpooling for you folks. Dress for the weather to include comfortable walking/hiking foot gear.  The short walking portions will be easy to moderate.  Bring plenty of water and a lunch (carry in/carry out).
When: Saturday, October 25, 2025, 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM
Why:  An opportunity to learn, ask questions, and spend time with other curious friends and neighbors to learn about the geological, natural and human history of this beautiful part of our town.
We look forward to you joining us!  While membership in the Sandwich Historical Society is not required to participate in this program, supporting the Society through membership funds activities such as this and many others offered throughout the year. If you are interested in becoming a member, or renewing your membership with the Society, Director Jim Mykland will have membership envelopes on hand.  Membership is our strength!
~ Membership: Not a member yet? Membership is our strength, so please renew or consider joining (online, mail or in-person). We offer the convenience of payment via credit card and PayPal (the Society absorbs the fees); however, when possible, paying with cash or check is always preferred.

The Trek for Trees challenge is from October 1st to October 31st! We have planted 22 fruit trees: apples, pears, peaches, mulberries, plums, hazelnuts, and serviceberries. These trees need labels! Or--
Join our Strava linked on our website: Trek for Trees Challenge! to enter by running, hiking or paddling one mile.
Multiple entries are encouraged; there will be 20 total winners selected to sponsor our 20 trees. Your name will be added to the sign if you win; any additional messages for the tree tag must be 10 words or shorter. Submissions end October 31, 2025. An in-person drawing will be held on November 2, 2025, to reveal the 20 winners. To enter, visit https://squamlakes.org/event/trek-for-trees/

The Sandwich Woodshare Program wishes to thank Richard Beaton, Jim Burkhardt, Will Speers, Jack Starmer, Ray Cameron, Steve Twaddle, George Eaton, Dick Devens, and Bob Sweeney for their work sawing, splitting, and stacking wood at the Woodshare depot over the past few months. Thanks to their efforts, and plenty of logs, rounds, and split firewood from generous donors, we now have over 13 cords of stacked firewood, which should get us through the upcoming winter season.
Sandwich Woodshare is grassroots, all-volunteer program to procure firewood and distribute it to local residents who would otherwise be cold. This project is not intended to meet all of its clients’ heating requirements, but rather to serve as a stop-gap measure to cover urgent needs between fuel deliveries.

Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!

Thin Film Plastic Recycle Program Ends

The plastic Recycling 'Trex' Program (thin soft 'film plastics) at the Transfer Station has ended as of Columbus day weekend. We couldn't find a replacement volunteer. Of course the larger dumpster solid plastic recycling (including # 1, 2 & 7) will continue.
However, don’t stop the good habit of bringing this plastic to a Trex bin. You can bring it to Hannafords in Meredith (& most store locations). The bins out front to collect this plastic aren't always labeled Trex, but the manager stated that they are part of their program. There will be a large poster at transfer station
as a reminder to redirect your thin plastics.
Recycling is a very worthwhile endeavor if, indeed materials go to a better destination than landfill and Trex has created a near-perfect solution with plastic composite for building materials.
For any recycling program to work, however, is a community enterprise, depending on two things:
 1. Finding dedicated volunteers to run the program
 2. How compliant the participants are; we found about 3/4 of the plastics did not belong or were contaminated (as we all know, plastic is the most complicated material to recycle).
The good news is that many people in Sandwich did a great job in bringing clean, thin plastic to the Trex bins. Thanks to you and 2 1/2 years of volunteer time, Jim, Marin & Dwight saved the town close to 400 25 gal-size bags of soft, thin plastic from the trash dumpster (and loose in our environment) hundreds of years of breaking down into microplastics, possibly leaching into soil and water (some landfill containment is better than others). THANK YOU ALL!

Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.
