Back in 1899, New Hampshire Governor Frank West Rollins saw a problem, and took action. After the Civil War, many folks were moving away from New Hampshire in search of factory jobs in the cities, or hoping to farm out West. An alarming number of New Hampshire farms and rural areas were laying empty and abandoned. His idea: remind people of what they loved about New Hampshire and give them a festive summertime experience in their home towns. Hoping to bring former residents back to visit and reconnect with their roots, and perhaps move back and buy old empty farmhouses, Governor Rollins proclaimed the first Old Home Week in New Hampshire. Thus began the ongoing tradition in Sandwich, to celebrate Old Home Week every summer. There are so many fun and educational events throughout the week, which begins this year on August 1 and culminates on August 9th. It’s a great time to visit a quaint, historical NH town.

Sandwich Old Home Week 


The 128th Old Home week Celebration takes place in Sandwich August 1 – August 9, 2026. 
~It begins Saturday August 1 with the 51st Annual Bob Biddle Tennis Tournament, and a Pickle Ball Tournament. Also on Saturday is an open house at the Sandwich Children’s Center, and Advice to the Players’ Romeo and Juliet production which takes place 5-7 pm at Quimby Park. 
~On Sunday, August 2, an adult pick-up soccer game is happening at Quimby field at 9. At 10, the Community Church of Sandwich offers an old fashioned hymn sing at the Baptist Meetinghouse, 12 Church Street. Then from 11-2, The Lower Corner Schoolhouse will be open to get a glimpse into early American school life, 22 Schoolhouse Road. For Sandwich residents and guests, a horseshoes Match will take place at 2 pm on Quimby field. Finally, at 4 pm, you can Meet the Souls of Sandwich Past with interactive conversations at the Rural and Old Baptist Cemeteries. 
~Monday August 3 features a youth fishing derby from 9-10 am at Littles Pond.
On Tuesday, August 4, check out a historical toy-making workshop at the Heard barn from 10-noon. Also Tuesday and Wednesday, the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale takes place at the Smith building in the Fairgrounds. A live animal talk put on by the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center will be happening ~Tuesday at the Craft Building in the fairgrounds. And in the evening Tuesday, a free program at the Benz Center: America’s Birth in Stirring Words – Revolutionary War Battles and Poems they Inspired.
~Wednesday August 5 running right through Saturday, the Sandwich Historical Society will be open, featuring their summer exhibit: Beauty and Utility – A Century of Sandwich Home Industries. Lots of other great events on Wednesday: the 95th annual Youth Softball Game at Quimby Field, a cookout on Quimby Field at noon, Sports Day at Quimby field from 1-4, the Sandwich Farmers Market from 3-6 pm on the Village Green, and “Summer BioBlitz”, learning how to use the iNaturalist app to help the Conservation Commission build its inventory of animals and plants found in Sandwich: In front of town hall. 
~Thursday, August 6 from 10 till 4, will be the highlight of the week, Artisans on the Green – the Centennial Edition! Annual one-day art and craft fair which features local artists selling and demonstrating fine handmade crafts, along with activities for children and music. During Artisans on the green, the Sandwich Woman’s Club offers a luncheon on the green and will be making the raffle drawings which support Sandwich’s college students! At 10:30, check out the Bike, Trike, and Doll Carriage Parade, which starts at Quimby Field. Then at 4 pm, we’ll have a croquet match at Quimby field! To round out the day Thursday is an old fashioned Barn Dance upstairs in Town Hall from 7-9 pm, featuring Tom and Annie’s Caravan Band. 
~Friday, August 7, you can try Adult Yoga on Quimby Field at 9 am. Beginning at 10, the Quimby Transportation Museum will host an open house, 16 Maple Street. Twelve noon is the start of ‘Water Sports day’ at the town beach. And at 5 pm, a Family Fun Triathlon: Swim, Bike, Run. Register at 4:30 at the Town beach.
~Saturday, August 8 all day will be the Tennis Tournament Finals. From 12-3 at the Heard Barn (4 Skinner Street) the fifth Annual Collectors’ Day will take place. Sandwich residents showcase personal collections. Another viewing of Romeo and Juliet happens 5-7 pm at Quimby Park.
~Finally, on Sunday to wrap up Old Home Week, there’s an Adult Pick-up Soccer game at Quimby Field at 9; Then from 12 till 2 is the Sandwich Historical Society’s Annual Excursion and Picnic. Bring lunch and a chair; desserts and drinks provided. Location for this is the Town Green, Main Street.

Historical Society

Time Travel to 1976 During Sandwich’s 128th Old Home Week

Sandwich will celebrate its 128th Old Home Week from August 2–9, 2026, headlined by the unsealing of a historic 1976 town time capsule.
Capsule Opening: Event takes place August 9 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the Town Green. The capsule contains 50-year-old photographs, news clippings, and town documents.
Other historical events during Old Home Week: 
"Souls of Sandwich Past" interactive performance starts August 2 at 4:00 PM.
Centennial Picnic: The annual Excursion picnic hits the Town Green August 9 at noon.
Hands-on Crafting: Dan Reidy hosts a 19th-century rustic wooden toy-making workshop.
Educational Lectures: Jeffrey Zygmont presents on Revolutionary War battles and inspired poetry.
Community Showcases: Schedule includes a schoolhouse open house and the 5th Annual Collectors’ Day.

5th Annual Collectors’ Day

The Sandwich Historical Society announces their 5th Annual Collectors’ Day. Time to get your table ready! Collectors’ Day will take place on Saturday, August 8th from 12-3pm. This year, it will be in a new location: The Heard Barn on Upper Corner in Center Sandwich. 
The Historical Society has been in the business of curating our own collection of objects and artifacts for over 100 years, and we will have a table too, of powder horns from our archives!
Collections can give insight into the history, life, and culture of people over an extended period of time. It is part of humans’ desire to keep memories alive; to be the caretakers of these objects in our lifetimes.

Sandwich Home Industries 

The Home Industries’ centennial year features a rich array of activities, exhibits and, of course, best-quality handicrafts that illustrate the continued vitality of this venerable organization – not just in terms of desirable goods but as a community anchor and a wellspring of education and creativity among artisans of all ages.

Squam Lakes Natural Science Center
Animals with Bad Reputation
Live Animal Program


Meet two notorious New Hampshire species in this live animal presentation! Think of conflicts wildlife have with people. The public images of many New Hampshire species are often inaccurate and can result in negative attitudes held by people towards these animals. In this live animal presentation, a Squam Lakes Natural Science Center naturalist will introduce you to two live animals that have a bad reputation. Learn more about the lives of these animals, including the ways adaptations related to their bad reputations support survival in the natural world, and consider the good sides of these wild neighbors. Animal ambassadors may include (but are not limited to) the infamous skunk, opossum, porcupine, or snapping turtle.

Spittlebugs


Nature lovers of all ages are invited to join us for a fascinating talk on a little-known topic as Vinton Thompson presents "Everything You Wanted to Know About Spittlebugs" on Thursday, July 30, at 7 pm at the Wonalancet Chapel.
Spittlebugs are a relatively little-known group of insects named for the foamy "spittles" made by the immature forms. Although harmless to humans and most of their host plants, they are important pests of sugarcane and pasture grasses in Latin America and one species carries a disease deadly to olive trees in Italy. There are approximately 2,500 known species, spread over all continents except Antarctica. This presentation, offered by the Wonalancet Out Door Club and Wonalancet Preservation Association, will illustrate a dazzling diversity of forms, including the dozen species found locally, and provide interesting insights on spittlebug biology, ecology and evolution.
Vinton Thompson has been coming to the Wonalancet area since childhood. In 2010 he and his wife Ruth Moscovitch made the Jewell cottage in Ferncroft their second home. He began the study of spittlebugs as a graduate student at the University of Chicago, where he received his PhD in Evolutionary Biology. He continued working with these amazing creatures as a college teacher and administrator and now devotes full-time to their study through the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

Bearcamp Pond Association Meeting


The 69th Annual Bearcamp Pond Association's meeting will be Sunday August 2nd at 4:00 at the DORIS L. BENZ CENTER, 18 Heard Road, Center Sandwich.
The Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of Bearcamp Pond. Our diverse programs, such as water testing, maintenance of loon nesting rafts and community education, help ensure the pond remains healthy and a source of enjoyment for all. Sandwich Woman’s Club Raffle


The Sandwich Woman’s club’s annual Raffle is coming up soon, during old Home week in August. There are many wonderful prizes donated by fantastic generous local businesses and individuals. This raffle supports scholarships available to Sandwich graduates for use in their secondary education pursuits. Students can apply for each year they are enrolled!
Tickets are for sale through August 5th and the drawing is August 6! Stop by the Farmers Market on Wednesday to pick up some tickets, plus at various other locations between now and the raffle. If you are not able to get to a location in person, please let us know and we will be sure you have the opportunity to purchase as many as you'd like. Email [email protected]. 


College/Trade School Funds for Sandwich Residents


If you are a Sandwich resident planning to further your education after high school, including 2- or 4-year college programs or training in a specific area, you are eligible to apply for Book and Supply Money from the Sandwich Woman’s Club. The funds you receive will be sent to you in the form of a check and as it is not a scholarship, will not conflict with any financial aid you should receive from your school or program.

Senior Meals 


Please join us at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, on Wednesdays for senior meals. Lunch is served at 12:00. Drop in around 11:30 a.m. to visit with friends and neighbors before lunch! All that’s required is your presence and desire to visit with your fellow seniors over a filling, satisfying and nourishing meal. A $3.00 donation is suggested, but no one is turned away.
Should you have any questions or wish to have meals delivered, please contact the Moultonborough site at 603-476-5110. 
Moultonborough senior meals are held Monday through Thursday at the Moultonborough Community Center (formerly the Lions Club) at 139 Old Route 109. All are welcome.


Household Hazardous Waste Days


The Lakes Region Planning Commission (LRPC) is hosting the 2026 Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Events for participating residents/taxpayers in the Lakes Region, including Sandwich. At the event, residents can bring 10 gallons or 50 pounds of hazardous waste from their home for safe disposal. These hazardous materials can be found in your garage, basement, shed, pool, art studio and cleaning supply area.

Candidate Chris Pappas Hosted by Sandwich Democrats


The Sandwich Democratic Committee is again hosting one of our District 2 representatives, Chris Pappas, as he is now a candidate for United States Senate. This is for the seat currently held by Senator Jeanne Shaheen who is retiring at the end of her term in January of 2027.
The committee is hosting Representative Pappas on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at 11:30am at the Benz Center. All interested Sandwich voters are welcome to attend. Chris will share his views and concerns and there will be time at the end of his remarks for questions from attendees.
Bring your own beverage, and donuts will be served to go with your beverage. Doors open at 11:00am.


Sandwich Transfer Station 


Facility stickers are available at the town hall for 2025-2026. Facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station. Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box. 
Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!

Harvest Church of the Lakes Region


Harvest Church meets in Sandwich every Sunday morning at 10:00 am for contemporary worship and Biblical teaching, in a welcoming, comfortable homey setting. Harvest offers several meetings during the week, including a men’s Bible Study on Mondays in Sandwich, and a women’s Bible Study on Fridays in Meredith. Quaker Burial Ground Exploration


The North Sandwich Friends Meeting (Quakers) will hold its regular hour-long silent meeting for worship at 10 a.m. on Sunday, August 2. As always, guests and visitors are warmly welcome.
