Samuel H. Wentworth Library
Calling all kids and families! Join Ms. Kourtney in the Community Room at S.H. Wentworth Library on Thursday 8/22/24 from 2-3:30 pm for "Make and Take Nature Journals." Kids can make their own journals and see some of Ms. Kourtney's nature collection. Parents can learn about supporting children's scientific thinking skills through play and journaling.

Friends of the Library Thank-You

The Friends of the Samuel H. Wentworth Library wish to send a thank-you to all for a very successful book sale. Writes Diana Witt of the Friends of the Library: “I want to particularly thank our devoted crew of volunteers who helped us move the books to the Smith Building…I also want to thank all those who helped us deal with the flooding of the Smith Building on Sunday. Many people chipped in to help with cleanup and removal of damaged books and boxes.” The Friends of the Library were able to set up the book sale Monday and open on Tuesday as scheduled. They also wish to acknowledge the generosity and support of the Sandwich Fair Association.


Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery

The Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery is delighted to announce its latest exhibit, Scapes. The show brings together cityscapes, seascapes, landscapes, and flowerscapes under the barn roof. The show features work by gallery artists and therefore offers a variety of different perspectives on landscape art. The opening reception will be held at 69 Maple St. in Center Sandwich on August 22, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. with complimentary refreshments and there is no charge to attend.
Each artist brings a unique voice to the gallery walls. New works that will be featured include paintings by artists Michael Doyle and Margery Thomas Mueller. Emerging artists Gwen Hoyt, Timothy Girard, and Jocelyn Paradis will also be on display alongside many gallery favorites such as work by Brooke Hedge, Joan Barnum, Jonathan Pellow, Sallie Wolf, and Dan Falby.
As a celebration of artistic diversity, the exhibit includes a broad spectrum of techniques and styles. Many of the artists such as Doyle and Barnum express their talents through a more traditional approach to painting. Pellow’s photographs depict the lines of city architecture sometimes softened by fog or clouds while Brook Hedge's work evokes an emotional response through her mastery of technique. Meanwhile, Falby’s abstract ceramic sculptures contribute a nice contrast that sparks dialogue about what makes something a landscape. This diverse collection is aimed at making the viewer question how they observe and interact with the environments around them.

Center Sandwich Fine Craft Gallery

Join us for this full-day workshop, where students will learn the beginning skills of broom-making. The morning session will focus on making traditional Cobweb Brooms, which are beautiful and useful.
After a lunch break, you will increase your skill level with a turkey wing whisk broom. The Turkey Wing Whisk Broom is a traditional-style hand whisk that is equally functional and decorative.
Artist Information: Robert Sheckler of Redmond Philbert Handwork is an enthusiastic learner, teacher, and crafter living in the Portland, Maine, area.

Historical Society

Please come enjoy this summer’s exhibit, “The Photograph and Memory,” featuring over 80 images from our collection, tracing the evolution of photography as it records and shapes our culture. Ambrotypes were glass plate transparencies recorded right in the camera! In order to see the positive, you simply insert black paper behind it to reverse the image! Come into the gallery and do it yourself! See how it was done 175 years ago! "The Photograph and Memory" exhibition, at the Sandwich Historical Society. Photography Presentation and Lecture

The Sandwich Historical Society Presents:
Photography Comes of Age: The Wet-Plate Collodion Process, by Gary Samson, August, 31, 4:30 PM at the Doris Benz Community Center, 18 Heard Road, Sandwich.
The Presentation:
In conjunction with our current exhibition, "The Photograph and Memory," of historic photographic processes at the Sandwich Historical Society,
Gary Samson, Professor Emeritus of Photography, New England College and former Artist Laureate of New Hampshire, will give an illustrated lecture on wet-plate photography and some of its most famous 19th century practitioners including Julia Margaret Cameron, Carleton Watkins, Nadar, and Matthew Brady. 
Gary will also have contemporary examples of his wet-plate portrait work as well as the camera equipment he uses for this historic process, that was the primary photographic process used world-wide from the early 1850’s through the mid 1880’s for portraiture, landscape, and architectural photography.
Please join us for this presentation with a unique insight to the way photographs were made in the mid-to-late 19th century, by a master of its contemporary use! 


Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods

Get outside and take in the sights, sounds and scents along the trails in a natural, wild forest at Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods. The summer months come and go so quickly, and things are changing rapidly in the natural world.

CSVW trails are open from dawn until dusk every day FREE of charge.
Park in the upper parking area and sign in at the Visitor’s Kiosk where you will find trail maps and other helpful information.


Wildcrafting Workshop

Embrace the nature of our cycles and seasons while discovering the art of creating wild, locally harvested tea for beverage and medicinal purposes. Identify familiar, local plants traditionally used for various teas, infusions, and tinctures. Learn the essence of the wildcrafter’s promise and code—emphasizing the principles of ethical and sustainable wildcrafting, vital to perpetuating the continued proliferation of healing plants into the future—an act of kindness, honor, gratitude, and respect to our plant families. 
The workshop covers a range of practical activities in the field, equipping you with the skills to prepare, dry, store, and crush wild plants, and understand when to use fresh or dry. This hands-on approach will leave you feeling empowered and prepared for your own wildcrafting adventures.
Understanding the tools, guides, and apps for plant identification is crucial for safe and responsible wildcrafting. This workshop will ensure you are familiar with the plants you encounter, helping you to avoid dangerous look-a-likes and learn about endangered, threatened, or sensitive plants.

Club Sandwich with John Davidson

Willow Pond Antiques and Goods

Located at 12 main Street, Center Sandwich, Willow Pond features unique whimsical antiques and goods. You can also find Anna’s “Squam Neck Farm” Fresh Eggs at Willow Pond. Hours are Thursday through Saturday, 11-4, and Sunday 12-4.


Bookshop Open

Hill Country Books at 25 Grove Street is open Thursday through Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm. You’ll find a selection of unique reading material, many old books. The air conditioner is on. There is a big selection of Cashmere fingerless gloves for cooler weather. Summer is the best time to take a look. Available will be hot mustard, chili sauce, Scottish Shortbread, a wide variety of crafts, small antiques, White Mountain prints, antiquarian books, books by local authors, and book bargains including sets for $20.


Music Jam

Hello, beginner to intermediate musicians. This is a reminder that we gather every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm at the Sandwich town hall for a free, fun-filled music jam. We play traditional, Celtic, oldtime, folk, and Americana tunes at a slow to moderate tempo. Bring your hobby out and start playing with others! It’s fun and inclusive. Right now, we have fiddles, penny whistle, flute, guitars, mandolin, acoustic bass, piano, concertina, and an autoharp!! Sheet music available. Plenty of parking, and an elevator lift if needed. Friends and Fiber

If music isn’t your thing, maybe yarn is! Every Wednesday evening, 6:00 – 8:30 pm, Library Community Room: Friends and Fiber Group: All abilities and ages of fiber enthusiasts (and those wanting to learn or just visit) are welcome to attend. Come with your knitting, crocheting, spinning, felting, rug hooking, embroidery, sewing or other fiber arts-related or hand-held project to work on. There is no charge and the group is casual and welcoming. While there is no formal instruction, if you have a question about your project, there is usually someone in attendance who can provide assistance. Experience is that the group is likely to gather on the off weeks as well as everyone enjoys the company and sharing of ideas. Chestnut Meadow Farm

We will be taking part in the Sandwich Farmers’ Market every Saturday throughout the summer from 10 till noon on the village green in Sandwich. The lettuce is doing great this year! Mountain Breeze Farm

Mt Breeze Farm will be joining other vendors Saturday morning 10- 12 for a market on the green, 32 Main Street, Sandwich. We will be there with freshly made garlic scape powder and salt, beef, pork and maple syrup. We will have ground beef, beef kielbasa, beef chorizo, stew meat and select steaks. For pork we will have ground pork, breakfast sausage, bratwurst, kielbasa, bone-in chops, cutlets, ham steaks, spareribs and baby back ribs. We will also have maple syrup in a variety of sizes.


Farmers’ Market

Your local farmers are busy raising and growing all sorts of delicious and beautiful products, and they want to share the bounty with you every Saturday this summer, from  10 am to 12 noon on the green in front of the Sandwich Fine Craft Gallery in the center of town. You’ll find local beef, pork, eggs, syrup, vegetables, herbs, jams, delicious baked goods, down home music, and more! If you like small, quiet, local farmers’ markets, this is the one for you.


Tamworth Community Food Center Welcomes You

If you or someone you know is in a position where access to food would be of help, please call the number provided. There are resources. The primary goal of the Tamworth Community Food Center is addressing hunger for those in need, serving the communities of Tamworth and Sandwich, NH. Our organization’s volunteers are trained and well-informed, knowing the value of awareness, action, and the effects of hunger. We are dedicated to providing fresh and nutritious food to people and families who may go without it. Our volunteers are devoted to understanding the significance and impact of community outreach. Donations from individuals, local organizations, businesses, and the towns provide stability and support, addressing the essentials of our citizens via sustainable solutions. It is our goal to tackle both short and long-term needs.

Senior Meals

Join the fun at our Wednesday lunch here in Sandwich! Sandwich senior meals take place on Wednesdays at noon at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Center Sandwich. Additionally, Moultonboro senior meals are held Monday through Thursday at the Moultonboro Community Center (formerly Old Lions Club) at 139 Old Route 109. All are welcome. Coffee will be ready at 11:30!

Sandwich Transfer Station

2023-2024 facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station (and swimming facilities). Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box. Transfer Station use is strictly prohibited for vehicles without stickers/passes (even for longtime residents!).
Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!


Styrofoam Collection

From Mark Longly of the Sandwich Recycling Group:
Styrofoam collection at the Sandwich transfer station has been going well and our 
weekly deliveries to the Gilford densifier have resulted in savings from reduced
hauling fees as well as lower emissions and ash from incineration.  In addition 
to these benefits, the recycled material is used as feedstock in making insulation 
board, thereby replacing the need for virgin polymer in the construction process. 
Our hub location in Gilford, serving 12 towns, has diverted more than 88 40-yard 
containers from landfills or incinerators. 
However, there are three things you can do to make the task of preparing recycled 
Styrofoam for shipment easier for me and the equipment operators in Gilford:
1.)  The material to be fed into the densifier's hopper must be broken down to less than 12" X 12" sized pieces. 
2.)  The Styrofoam must be free of contamination.  Please clean any food scraps and remove all packaging, tape, cardboard, and labels. 
3.)   Polypropylene packaging cannot be densified.  Expanded polypropylene is soft and flexible, whereas expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) is rigid and breakable.

North Sandwich Friends (Quaker) Meeting
North Sandwich Friends Meeting is open for in-person worship every Sunday from 10 – 11 a.m. in the 1881 historic Meeting House. The Meeting House is located at 354 Quaker Whiteface Road in North Sandwich, just north of the Durgin covered bridge.


Harvest Church of the Lakes Region

Harvest Church invites you to visit at 80 Bean Road in Moultonborough, Sundays at 10:00 am for contemporary worship and Biblical teaching. We have several meetings during the week as well: a men’s Bible Study on Mondays and a home church meeting on Thursdays in Sandwich. Call for details! In the Round

In the Round, a community discussion group for the past 25 years, meets weekly in Sandwich. Meetings are Sunday, in person at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road. Doors open at 8:30, discussion begins at 8:45. The discussion generally runs until 10am, or a bit longer. The topic is always thought provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome.
