November’s winds gust, emptying the maples and oaks of the few remaining leaves. Patches of sunlight make the peaks of the Sandwich Range glow, and the further hills have a whitish shroud, looking suspiciously like snow. Inside, warm soup stews and coffee brews. Here’s a few of the fun and interesting events coming up in the next couple weeks in and around Sandwich: (you can read more about them below!) November 15 – Steve Allain at Cornerhouse November 16 – Coyote Talk at Library November 22 – The Starlight Honeys at Cornerhouse November 23 – Gratitude Story time at Library December 5 – Wreath Making December 7-8 – Christmas in the Village Samuel H. Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 12:00 – 5:30, Thursday and Friday, 10:00 – 5:00, and Saturday 10:00 – 12:30. Coyote Talk Becoming Wolf: The Eastern Coyote in New England – On Saturday, November 16 at 10:30 am, the Samuel Wentworth Library presents Christ Schadler, wild canid ecologist, who will help us to understand more about the eastern coyote. An eastern coyote is defined as much by its western coyote ancestry as by the DNA contribution from the Eastern wolf. Coyotes in the northeast vary physically and behaviorally from its smaller western relative – while still carrying their incredible adaptability. This program delves into the ecology and behavior of this creature, its indefatigability and how it is the human who must adapt to live with the coyote. On the horizon, however, is a native carnivore which fled the northeast during wolf removal and now may be trying to return: The eastern wolf. A look-alike to the coyote, it has been killed mistakenly for its similarity of appearance to the coyote. We’ll talk about how the wolf and coyote might negotiate a truce in the northeast and how we might do the same. Reservations not required but an email letting us know your plan to attend is both helpful and very welcome. You can find more at sandwichnh.org. ~Derek Meredith of the Remick Park Revitalization Committee noted that the new playground equipment is installed, the mats are in place, and the playground is open for use. ~Fire Chief Ted Call and Road Agent Ty Bryant spoke with the Selectmen about maintenance of the Town Hall fire pond. The last maintenance was completed more than 20 years ago and is overdue. They would like to lower the water level so that the highway crew can clear out the weeds. No permit is required by DES for the maintenance of an existing fire pond. The Fire Chief will seek the permission of the property owners and work with abutters to minimize water runoff issues. ~Kathy Thorndike of the Energy Committee noted that energy audits of town buildings will be completed by the end of November. The Energy Committee will prioritize a solar project at the Transfer Station due to unknown factors with the Town Hall roof and the tight timeline for the 2025 budget. The Energy Committee recommends creating a warrant article to establish an expendable trust fund for energy projects. Fourth of July Fireworks Question At the October 7 meeting, the selectboard discussed Fourth of July Fireworks. Sandwich has had a long history of hosting fireworks on July 3, but the cost is becoming prohibitive. A minimum of $20,000 is required to book fireworks for July 3. For July 2, the minimum for 2025 will be $8,500 and will increase in 2026. The board is looking for public input, and are willing to consider other alternatives to a fireworks display.
