Here's the line up of books for your winter reading. Thank you, book reviewers! The Books Sandwiched In committee hopes you'll enjoy these books, and can join the discussions Mondays at noon in the library Community Room. ~January 13: Where You’ll Find Me by Ty Gagne, Reviewer Frances Strayer. Kate Matrosova was a highly skilled, world-class recreational climber. This compelling narrative details her last winter hike in the Presidentials in 2015, and the dangerous rescue attempt by state and local personnel. It’s a cautionary tale about perilous decision making and overly-ambitious goals. Ty Gagne is a certified wilderness first responder, and the author of The Last Traverse, another true story. ~January 27: Apeirogon by Colum McCann, Reviewer Lee Warren. In this timely and epic novel, a Palestinian and an Israeli lose young daughters to terrorists. Based on a true story, the grieving fathers become friends and peace advocates. McCann uses powerful metaphors, like migrating birds and a daring tightrope walker, to convey the agony and complexity of the conflict which, like an apeirogon, has an infinite number of sides. ~February 10 All the Beauty in the World by Patrick Bringley, Reviewers Cyd Clark and Jean Knox. Museum guard Patrick Bringley shares his journey of grief, solitude, and discovery at New York’s magnificent Metropolitan Museum of Art. The memoir raises questions about the nature of grief and the transformative power of great art. You may want to visit the MET after reading the book! ~February 24 The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store, by James McBride, Reviewer Mike Henriques. The fictional neighborhood of Chicken Hill, Pennsylvania, is home to some of the most complicated, funny, and compassionate characters you’ll meet in any novel. McBride’s fast-paced narrative is entertaining, while showing how faith and community can sustain us. ~March 10 Our Moon, byRebecca Boyle; Reviewer Adam Heard. Did you see the moon slip silently in front of the sun in last April’s eclipse? Our closest celestial neighbor has played a starring role in how we came to be, and who we are. Ancient humans used the moon to harness time, and many worshiped it as a deity. As a source of knowledge and wonder, the moon is anything but dull. ~March 24 James, by Percival Everett. Reviewer, Will Speers. James, the narrator of this brilliant novel, may seem familiar to those who know Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. But this new James is a fully-imagined, majestic human being. The world he inhabits threatens him at every turn. Books Sandwiched In is supported by The Friends of the S.H.Wentworth Library. The program meets Mondays at noon in the library Community Room and on Zoom. Children’s Christmas Party For many years the Sandwich Women’s Club has hosted a Christmas Party complete with Santa and Mrs. Claus, where all children receive presents that include hats, socks, and mittens knitted or donated by members of our community. Last year over 100 Sandwich children received hats, mittens and other gifts, and there is a similar number this year, so once again we need your help! What we really need this year are boys socks and children’s waterproof gloves or mittens. We seem to have plenty of hats and girls’ socks. The Central School is always in need of socks and waterproof gloves and mittens so anything not taken will be donated to them. Sizes range from infant to 6th grade. Some of the older kids definitely wear adult socks and mittens. We will have boxes at the LIBRARY and TOWN HALL for you to drop off your contributions, by December 18th. This is required for documentation to receive reimbursement from the government. The Moultonboro site chooses the menu and prepares it; food is delivered to Sandwich for serving. In Sandwich, coffee is ready at 11:30. Desserts are usually set out by then; there is a good possibility one of our volunteers will arrive with a still-warm homemade sweet bread (banana and pumpkin come to mind). Fresh bouquets at each table. Tempting, isn't it? P.S. The program is always in need of drivers to deliver meals to those in need. If you know someone who could benefit from home delivery in Sandwich, please call the Moultonboro site at 603-476-5110. Paperwork is a cinch to complete to get the ball rolling.
