By Stephanie Goddard,
In the skies above the Sandwich range, layers of gray and white in various shades and textures make a lovely canvas for the art of November. Sandwich’s pines, balsams, and hemlocks now stand out, green amid brown. The woods become inviting, as you can see through the bare trees into the forest. Here’s a few of the fun and interesting events coming up in the next couple weeks in and around Sandwich: (you can read more about them below!) November 7 – Creativity Club at Library November 7 – Sandwich Woman’s Club November 7 – Wonalancet Star Gazing November 8 – Chris Peters at Cornerhouse November 9 – Geology Walk and Talk November 12 & 15 – Oil painting Class November 16 – Coyote Talk Samuel H. Wentworth Library is located at 35 Main Street, PO Box 146 Center Sandwich, NH 03227 phone: (603) 284-6665; email: [email protected]. Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 12:00 – 5:30, Thursday and Friday, 10:00 – 5:00, and Saturday 10:00 – 12:30. Coyote Talk Becoming Wolf: The Eastern Coyote in New England – On Saturday, November 16 at 10:30 am, the Samuel Wentworth Library presents Christ Schadler, wild canid ecologist, who will help us to understand more about the eastern coyote. An eastern coyote is defined as much by its western coyote ancestry as by the DNA contribution from the Eastern wolf. Coyotes in the northeast vary physically and behaviorally from its smaller western relative – while still carrying their incredible adaptability. This program delves into the ecology and behavior of this creature, its indefatigability and how it is the human who must adapt to live with the coyote. On the horizon, however, is a native carnivore which fled the northeast during wolf removal and now may be trying to return: The eastern wolf. A look-alike to the coyote, it has been killed mistakenly for its similarity of appearance to the coyote. We’ll talk about how the wolf and coyote might negotiate a truce in the northeast and how we might do the same. Reservations not required but an email letting us know your plan to attend is both helpful and very welcome. [email protected] Sandwich Woman’s Club For those of you who may not be familiar with the Sandwich Woman's Club, we have been around since 1928 with a mission to do good for the community. Two of our biggest projects each year are the Community Christmas Tree (a Christmas party for the children) & providing some Book & Supply money for our college & tech school students. These are both really feel good projects that bring joy & help to our youth. In addition, it provides a sense of being part of a caring community. These activities are funded largely by the Woman's Club Luncheon on the Green during Artisans on the Green & the Old Home Week Raffle. We are currently in need of women to join us & help us continue these activities. We meet only 4 times a year. It's a great way to support our youth, as well as meeting other women in our community. Please come & check us out, perhaps you would like to join in the fun. Our next meeting is Thur, 11/7, at 5:30 at the Benz Ctr. This meeting we will be planning the Community Christmas Tree (not to be confused with the Tree Lighting in early Dec), when each child receives a small gift AND meets with & has their picture taken with Santa & Mrs. Claus. Such a fun event, seeing the joy & excitement on these young faces! Stories Behind the Stars On Thursday, November 7 at 7 PM, join Chocorua Lake Conservancy and longtime teacher, storyteller, and outdoor enthusiast Matt Krug for Stories Behind the Stars in Wonalancet, NH, an evening of stories and star gazing. For millennia people have used the night sky as a compass, a calendar, and a canvas to express their cultural ideology. Stories Behind the Stars combines myths from around the world, science, and imagination to introduce the audience to the night sky. We will discuss how to locate and recognize many of the major fall constellations, and how to navigate by the stars. Using our eyes we will meet villains, heroes, and lovers. If we get lucky, we might even spot a Taurid meteor shower fireball! Bring your curiosity, a sense of wonder, and dress for the nighttime temps. You’ll receive directions to the location in Wonalancet when you register. Register at https://chocorualake.secure.nonprofitsoapbox.com/2024-08-27-stories-stars . Matt Krug has been introducing audiences to the night sky for more decades than he would care to admit. When not teaching or performing, he can be found making “To Do” lists at his home in Fryeburg, Maine. A Look Back Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Grab your favorite fall beverage and enjoy! Here is a sampling. Visit https://www.sandwichhistorical.org/miscellany-and-mystery.html for more! November 8, 1894: ~Last Monday was a cold, disagreeable day with considerable rain and a little snow mixed in. A good day for electioneering. ~On Election Day, Herman H. Quimby, was elected State Representative from Sandwich. ~The Wonalancet House in Birch Intervale has some guests yet; but the snow which will soon cover our hills will probably encourage most city people to return to their homes. ~There is talk of an electric railroad from West Ossipee to Tamworth Village. It would not be a a very hard job to build one from Centre Sandwich to West Ossipee, and would seem to be of great advantage in developing our town as a summer resort. When the system is so fully perfected that freight can be carried advantageously the writer is of the opinion that we as a town would receive sufficient benefit to warrant us sharing the expense of building and equipping such a road. Rural Cemetery Fall Closing The trustees of the Rural Cemetery will be cleaning the grounds in preparation for closing the cemetery for the winter. Waxing Moon Gardens News from Waxing Moon: ~Despite maybe biting off a bit more than we were able to chew this season it was, as always, our best season yet!
