September 28, 1899: ~Henry Abbott has returned from a visit to his brother, George W. Abbott of Sioux Falls, S.D.. Mr. Abbott returns impressed with the vastness of the West, everything done upon such a vast scale. …among other entertainments was a ten days hunting trip with a large party – some twenty men and ten horses –and they found an abundance of game. The Sioux Falls Daily Press included in the list of game returned; 222 prairie chickens, 60 ducks, 187 Indian ducks, 270 fish, 404 salamanders, a new kind of game bird, large number of prairie gulls, jacksnipes, rails, jack rabbits, cotton tail, one skunk, muskrats and one tramp. The tramp was included in the list of the game. ~A party consisting of Orrin Vittum, Edmund Vittum, Alonzo Wilson, of Salem, N.H., and Joseph Bailey of Danville, N.H., the last named being eighty years of age, made the ascent of Mt. Whiteface a few days since. They climbed up in three hours from the brick house, which was pretty good walking for a man his age. They made the trip down in two hours. Mr. Bailey has climbed in the Rocky Mountains, but claimed that the view from Whiteface was one of the most picturesque that he has met with in his travels. ~Henry Estes shot a nice deer in Sandwich Notch, last Saturday. Deer are very plenty this year. Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods This is a beautiful time to hit the trails at Chapman Sanctuary and Visny woods as the seasons begin to change. Leaves on the trees are losing some of their green and starting to hint at their autumn colors. Apples are ripening just as berries are disappearing. Some vegetation is already defoliating, while mushrooms, fungi and mosses are having their moment in nature. As beautiful as any flower, these thrive all over the CSVW trails. Still there are plenty of native perennials blooming for the pollinators who are extra determined right now. Many birds have already begun the business of preparing for migration and some have already flown. Other species are busy taking advantage of the available seeds and nuts that are abundant on the sanctuary acreage. Leftover caterpillar nests and the remaining insects and fat frogs in the area are a great source of nutrition for birds and animals. A visit to CSVW is always a great way to enjoy the early autumn months. The trails are a cool and quiet place for hikers, birdwatchers, and all nature enthusiasts. Located at 740 Mt Israel Road in Center Sandwich, New Hampshire. CSVW is open FREE to the public every day from dawn until dusk with plenty of FREE parking. North Sandwich Friends North Sandwich Friends Meeting invites friends and neighbors to join their weekly Meeting for Worship from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Sunday at the North Sandwich Meetinghouse (354 Quaker Whiteface Rd., N Sandwich, NH 03259). Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other. In the Round Discontinued After meeting weekly for the past 17 years, In the Round has come to a close. The group was formed in 2008 by Sheila Brown, wife of interim minister David Morgan, so that people could explore meaningful topics and issues of mutual interest in a context outside of church and religion. It first met at Mocha Rising, where The Foothills Cafe is now, at the eccentric time of 8:45 Sunday morning to allow a 9:45 break for those who wished to go to Church at 10 - continuing on as particulars allowed. On Sheila's departure, rather than closing, the group chose to continue meeting, becoming intentionally leaderless. Each week, the following week’s topic would often flow from unaddressed aspects of the previous topic, and one of the attendees would arise to research and run the next discussion. Through the ensuing 17 years, ItR met more than 800 times addressing a wide variety of topics among many and varied participants, mostly from Sandwich but also with some farther flung neighbors and visitors. Most recently the group met at the Benz Center on Sunday Mornings. In the Round has provided a form of intellectual and spiritual community that is part of what makes Sandwich Sandwich. In the words of Tom Thiel, one of the regulars, “All things must pass. We are grateful for this spontaneous meeting of minds over all these many years.”
