What you may be seeing in the water From the Squam Lakes Association: You may have noticed small, fuzzy, snowflake-like spheres floating in the water. This is Gloeotrichia echinulata (Gloeo), a species of cyanobacteria. Recent samples from community members and staff show counts between 500–2,500 cells/mL, with DES confirming similar levels. While these numbers are far below the recreational advisory threshold of 70,000 cells/mL, Gloeo can still be visible to the naked eye. Before swimming, boating, or letting pets in, check water conditions. Gloeo looks like tiny yellow-green specks below the surface. Light, scattered colonies generally indicate lower risk, while dense clouds or surface scums are a sign to stay out. Because wind and waves can shift colonies quickly, conditions may vary between shorelines and throughout the day. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.
