Tuesday morning saw a nearly full ‘Snow Moon’ setting at sunrise, the large yellow orb sinking as to slumber behind Sandwich Notch. Israel and Whiteface, and all the other peaks of the range seem to almost shimmer with the coating of snow among the trees and rocks. Even if you aren’t a fan of winter, the beauty is one thing we can be thankful for here in Sandwich.

International Nights

The Doris L. Benz Community Center is again hosting three International Nights this January, February & March. We’ve got a marvelous travel lineup: a trip down under to New Zealand, then East to Azerbaijan, Georgia & Armenia, and finally a taste of Europe with Sicily. 
Tickets include a 3-course dinner and the presentation. The menu is inspired by the cuisine of the country. As usual, it’s BYO. Cost is $35/person. All events start at 5:30 pm with doors opening at 5 pm. Details for tickets are below.

February 13, 1908: 
~Much excitement was caused last week in the west part of town by the house of Leslie Magoon catching fire. The chimney burned out and set the roof of the house on fire. Through the quick and hard work of the neighbors the flames were soon under control. Not much damage was done. (Leslie Magoon lived on Smithville Road just past the Dinsmore Pond Road intersection. SHS ed.)
~Since February came in winter has put in an appearance in dead earnest, plenty of snow and cold weather. The thermometers have run as low as 33 below zero.
 ~There was quite an interesting article in the Boston Daily Globe of Monday, Feb. 10, in relation to the only American girl who can claim a king for a husband, and spoke of the sister of this Ex-Queen of Portugal. The writer in the Globe said the sister of the queen married and settled near Boston. And is still alive. The writer of this article is informed that the sister referred to, if not a resident of Sandwich, passes much of her time here with near relatives and is an unostentatious lady. We will not call the name, but understand that the facts, as stated, are undoubtedly true.


Wonalancet Stargazing
The Chocorua Lake Conservancy is hosting “Stars and Stories,” on Tuesday, February 25, from 7:00 PM till 8:30 PM. Come learn about the constellations in the winter night sky and some of the stories we tell about them, in Wonalancet with storyteller and teacher Matrt Krug: Visit https://www.chocorualake.org/events/2025/2/25/stories-stars to register.


Sled Dog Fun Day

The Tamworth Outing Club, North Country Mushers, and Chinook Owners Assc. Present the 2025 Sled Dog Fun Day racing and exhibition at the Chinook Trail Farm fields across from Wonalancet Chapel on 113A. Sunday, February 16 from 8 am till noon. Large teams arrive at 8 am, racing starts at 9. Dogs will make the 12-mile race and will be out of sight for some time until they come back into the field to finish the race. Chinook Owners Assoc. begins dog showcasing at 10 am. Show up early to catch all of the action. (Please leave your own dogs at home.)


Ski Trails in Fairgrounds
From the Sandwich Parks and Recreation Director, Ole Anderson: The Nordic ski trails in the center are open for use. We want to thank the Sandwich Fair Association for their support for these trails. You are all more than welcome, and encouraged, to use the trails at any point. This trail system is used by SCS Nordic program 1:15-2:20 on Tuesdays, the Sandwich Parks and Rec Nordic Program on Saturdays, and also used by the Inter-Lakes Nordic ski team on several afternoons a week. It is possible the trails will be busy on a weekday afternoon, but by no means closed, during these Inter-lakes practices. 
The trails will be entirely closed for Ski races Monday 2/17 all day.
These are first and foremost groomed trails for skiers. Please keep your foot traffic to the edge of the groomed area. Footprints through the groomed area can severely and dangerously impact the terrain for the skiers. These trails are not for sledding, please do not sled or allow your children to sled on the trails. If you do take your dog, please pick up their poop. Not doing so is unacceptable anywhere and our groomed Nordic ski trails are no exception.

State Championship Ski Race

This year the Middle School Championship race will be held in downtown Sandwich on Monday, February 17th. This is a huge community event celebrating Nordic skiing in the state of NH and we hope that you all can make it!
As part of the event, Inter Lakes Nordic provides a “Nordic Cafe" for all racers and families who come to the event (about 500+people). Most participants don’t bring their own food because we have historically provided so many delicious options. This is the only fundraiser for our HS and MS teams, with funds raised going directly to purchasing/reducing the costs of hats, jackets and skis among other things.
There are a few ways that we need support at this event: donations of food for the Nordic Cafe, volunteers at the Nordic Cafe, and volunteers for the running of the event. You will be trained for any volunteer positions! If you’d like to help out, please get in touch with Rachel Bartlett via email ([email protected]), text or phone 207-212-8350).


Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods

Gear up and get ready for some beautiful XC skiing and snowshoeing at Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods!
Trustees and Members have been out on the pristine, wintry landscape at the sanctuary and reports are that the snowy forest is gorgeous! Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods is located at 740 Mt Israel Road in picturesque Sandwich, New Hampshire.  There is plenty of free parking and room to prepare yourself for a lovely February day on the trails.

January Weather Summary

Rod W., one of our weather watchers here in Sandwich reports on January’s wintery weather: The average high temperature for the month was 26.5° and the
low 11.8°. This is 0.3° above average. The mildest day was 38° on the 19th of the month and the coldest -10° on the 22nd. The snowfall total was 16.2” which is 10” below normal. Total precipitation was only 1.43” which is 2.51” below normal.
The highest wind gust observed was 48 mph on the 8th of the month.

Foothills Café and Curio

Upcoming special events at the Foothills:
For Valentine's Day Dinner, February 14th, the Foothills is offering a 3-course prix fixe along with limited ala carte options. Flexible enough that there will be something for everyone. Reservations are recommended.
Off The Dock Players Production of Sharr White’s, The Other Place. This will be a deep and unique theater experience. The Foothills is offering a Dinner Theater option on Friday, Feb 28 and Saturday Mar 1. Dinner theater includes a 3-course prix fixe meal before the show and your ticket to the show for $58.  The show will run on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights for 2 weeks—2/20, 2/21 and 2/22, then 2/27, 2/28 and 3/1. The Dinner Theater option is only on 2/28 and 3/1, but you can also just see the show on those nights too. All tickets and ticket options can be purchased on the Off The Dock Players Website

Off the Dock Players presents ‘The Other Place’

Local theater group Off The Dock Players has been busy rehearsing a new play which will open production on Thursday, February 20, 2025 at 7pm at the Town Hall in Sandwich. Subsequent shows are 2/21, and 2/22, and the following week on 2/27, 2/28, and 3/1, all at 7pm.
The Other Place by Sharr White: A mystery unravels as contradictory evidence, blurred truth, and fragmented memories collide in a cottage on the windswept shores of Cape Cod.  Main character Juliana Smithton's journey unfolds as she confronts a reality that becomes impossible to ignore. 
Join us for the provocative and poignant production starring Rebecca Cole, Abe Garon, Marena Harris, Parker Hansen, and Ashley Bullard; directed by Marena Harris and Nancy Blaine.

Valentine’s Dance

Announcing the “We ❤️ Sandwich” fund-raiser contradance at Sandwich Town Hall. Valentine's Day, Friday February 14th; 6:30 to 8pm. This is an all-ages contradance, sponsored by the Sandwich Jam, to raise money for the town hall’s upright piano, tuning and repairs if needed. And if you don’t dance, come out to hear live traditional music and watch your neighbors weave and flow to New England dance tunes! Donation $4 per person, children under 10 are free. Famed caller Jacqueline Laufman is leading the merriment; all dances are simple and will be explained. Children are welcome to attend with an adult.

Music Jam

Hello, beginner to intermediate musicians. This is a reminder that we gather every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm at the Sandwich town hall for a free, fun-filled music jam. We play traditional, Celtic, oldtime, folk, and Americana tunes at a slow to moderate tempo. Bring your hobby out and start playing with others! It’s fun and inclusive. Right now, we have fiddles, penny whistle, flute, guitars, mandolin, acoustic bass, piano, concertina, and an autoharp!! Sheet music available. Plenty of parking, and an elevator lift if needed. Friends and Fiber

If music isn’t your thing, maybe yarn is! Every Wednesday evening, 6:00 – 8:30 pm, Library Community Room: Friends and Fiber Group: All abilities and ages of fiber enthusiasts (and those wanting to learn or just visit) are welcome to attend. Come with your knitting, crocheting, spinning, felting, rug hooking, embroidery, sewing or other fiber arts-related or hand-held project to work on. There is no charge and the group is casual and welcoming. While there is no formal instruction, if you have a question about your project, there is usually someone in attendance who can provide assistance. Experience is that the group is likely to gather on the off weeks as well as everyone enjoys the company and sharing of ideas. This is hands-on, heart-fulfilling work that connects you to the very start of the flower season. If you love springtime, being outside, and don’t mind getting a little dirty, this job is for you!
Tasks will include harvesting tulips, processing flowers, a flexible schedule, and fast-paced environment. Dates: end of April to end of May (Mother Nature calls the shots, so exact timing TBD) Help out 2-3 days a week with flexible 4-6 hour shifts.

Tamworth Community Food Center Welcomes You

The primary goal of the Tamworth Community Food Center is addressing hunger for those in need, serving the communities of Tamworth and Sandwich, NH. Our organization’s volunteers are trained and well-informed, knowing the value of awareness, action, and the effects of hunger. We are dedicated to providing fresh and nutritious food to people and families who may go without it. Our volunteers are devoted to understanding the significance and impact of community outreach. Donations from individuals, local organizations, businesses, and the towns provide stability and support, addressing the essentials of our citizens via sustainable solutions. It is our goal to tackle both short and long-term needs.

Senior Meals

Join the fun at our Wednesday lunch here in Sandwich! Sandwich senior meals take place on Wednesdays at noon at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Center Sandwich. Additionally, Moultonboro senior meals are held Monday through Thursday at the Moultonboro Community Center (formerly Old Lions Club) at 139 Old Route 109. All are welcome. Coffee will be ready at 11:30!
For those 60 years and older, meals are supported through local, state, and federal governments. Free will donations are most welcome.
The Moultonboro site chooses the menu and prepares it; food is delivered to Sandwich for serving.
Coffee is ready at 11:30. Desserts are usually set out by then; there is a good possibility one of our volunteers will arrive with a still-warm homemade sweet bread (banana and pumpkin come to mind). Fresh bouquets at each table.


Barn Preservation Tax Reduction

The New Hampshire law RSA79d is intended to preserve the scenic beauty of our rural agricultural heritage by providing tax incentives to owners of agricultural structures in exchange for their promise to maintain the structures. The requirements to qualify for such an arrangement are simple:  The barn’s age must equal or exceed 75 years and it must be viewable from a public road or waterway. If approved, the property tax on the structure is reduced by 75% for a period of ten years. The easement is renewable.
Sandwich has 210 barns, most of which meet the RSA79d qualifications, and we now have more barns enrolled in this preservation program than any other town in NH! Visit the following website for tips on protecting and maintaining your historic barn or learning more about other opportunities for financial assistance in assessing your old house or barn:  https://www.nhpreservation.org/nhpa-old-house-and-barn-resources
If you are interested in applying for the preservation easement, stop by our town hall and pick up a copy of the ‘barn preservation package’. You have until tax day in April to submit your application.  


Land Conservation Talk

Have you ever wondered what’s involved in putting your land into conservation and what the benefits might be? The Sandwich Conservation Commission invites you learn about the diverse options available for land conservation at a panel discussion to be held on Tuesday, February 25 at 7 p.m. at the Doris L. Benz Community Center, 18 Heard Road in Sandwich, N.H.
Representatives from two local Land Trusts who have worked with residents in the Lakes Region for decades will be on hand to offer their advice and answer your questions. A landowner who recently obtained an easement on his property will also offer his perspective on the process.
When: Tuesday, February 25 @ 7 p.m.

Rotary Club Exchange Student Program

Do you have a child or know of a child who is interested in learning a new language and meeting new people? The Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for more than 8,000 students world-wide who participate each year. It is a total cultural emersion program.  Participants describe their experience not as a year in their lifetime but a lifetime in a year. By sharing their own culture and embracing a new one, an exchange student helps foster global understanding—and learn a great deal about themselves and their home country in the process. An exchange student lives in another country for a full school year, living with 2-3 families in the town where they attend the local school. 
To apply for this program, a student must: 1) be 15 to 18.5 years of age by August 1st of the year they are traveling, 2) be in the upper 3rd of their class standing, and 3) attend Inter-Lakes High School. The cost of the program typically runs from about $3800 to $5400, which includes application fees, insurance, passport, visa fees, and airline tickets. Host clubs provide a monthly stipend. Additional costs include Rotary sponsored trips, if a student chooses to attend. Students typically participate during their Junior or “gap” year, but may also participate during their Senior year, if they wish. Scholarships are available for highly qualified applicants, based on financial need.
Freshmen and Juniors, who wish to participate during their Junior or “gap” year, respectively, or Sophomores who wish to participate during their Senior year, during the 2026-27 academic school year, should let their interests be known to the Meredith Rotary club by April 30th, 2025.

Sandwich Transfer Station

New facility stickers are available at the town hall for 2025-2026. Facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station. Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box.
Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!


2025 Proposed Budget Hearing

The Selectmen of the Town of Sandwich held a Public Hearing to review the 2025 proposed budget on Monday, February 10th, 2025 at 5:30 P.M at Sandwich Town Hall. If necessary, a second Public Hearing on the proposed 2025 budget will take place on Tuesday, February 18th, 2025 at 5:30 P.M. at the Sandwich Town Hall. The proposed budget will be available at www.sandwichnh.org under Forms & Documents no later than Wednesday, February 5th, 2024.


Town Elections

Sandwich’s Town Election (1st Session), takes place on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at the Town Hall. Polls open from 10am to 7pm.
The Town Meeting (2nd Session), will be on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, beginning at 6pm, at the Sandwich Central School.

In the Round

In the Round takes place Sundays at 8:45 – 10:30 am at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Sandwich.
In the Round, a community discussion group for the past 25 years, meets weekly in Sandwich. The topic is always thought-provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome.
