Sandwich Notch Walking Tour

Saturday, August 23 beginning at 10:00 am, Sandwich Historical Society director Jim Mykland will lead a walk and talk in the Notch. Registration is required. Email [email protected] for information.
Sandwich Notch has always held an air of mystery for residents and visitors alike. Who lived in these remote hill farms? How did they live and socialize? And what happened to them? From a high of twenty or so families in the 1820’s, by the turn of the twentieth century there were only a few residents still living here. Jim will take participants on a tour of the Notch and discuss the people and the history of those who lived in this remote corner of town. Enjoy stops at Beede’s Falls and Cow Cave, Pulpit Rock, the Devil’s Footprints, the state’s oldest billboard, the site of the Beebe River Logging Railroad, and the Moses Hall homestead (outside only). Depending on road conditions and the wishes of the tour, we may motor down to Upper Hall Pond.

A Look Back

Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Below is an excerpt. For more, visit sandwichhistorical.org/miscellany-and-mystery.html. Grab your favorite iced beverage, settle down in your favorite reading spot, and enjoy!
~August 10, 1899: The venerable Elisha Marston continues to be one of the youngest of old men. He lacks only one month of a full 98 years. Tuesday a.m. he rode four miles to call upon Mrs. Mary D. Peavey, of Boston, now summering at Moultonboro, aged 104 years, 3 months. It was a great pleasure to these aged people to meet again and talk of the years when the 19th century was young.
~Whiteface – Stephen Fogg met with quite an accident one day last week, getting thrown from a load of slabs which he was drawing. He fell between the horses and the loaded team passed over him, but did no more serious injury than some bad bruises and a bad shaking up. Dr. Bryar was called and it is now hoped that Mr. Fogg may fully recover, which is remarkable considering his advanced age and the great shock.
