SANDWICH NEWS COLUMN SUBMITTED MAY 13, 2025, FOR MAY 15, 2025 ISSUE, By Stephanie Goddard, [email protected], 603-455-0324

May is a beautiful month in Sandwich! The Garden Gnomes have been busy sprinkling color throughout town in the form of lovely flowers. Lilacs are on the cusp of sending their sweet aromas through town. Grass is lush and green, growing quicker than we can mow it. Even dandelions look bright and cheerful after a week of rain and then some sunshine. Spring is such a welcome sight.

A Look Back

Sandwich Historical Society director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Here is one excerpt: for more, visit sandwichhistorical.org and click on miscellany and mystery.
May 17, 1894: R.W. Hanson has been doing quite a job upon the roads in the Frank Fellows (Mt Israel Road) neighborhood and evidently intends to have our roads in this vicinity compare favorably with those in other parts of town.
~South Tamworth - Two teams collided on the way home from East Sandwich temperance meeting last Sunday evening, one person was thrown out and several considerably frightened. Additional comment might be made, but what good would it do? Something might also be said about a “traveling saloon” and the propriety of setting it up in business. Has not the time come for those who are permanent residents of these communities to do something besides hold temperance and lodge meetings? (Oh, the irony of the temperance folks getting wiped out by a “traveling saloon”. SHS ed.)
~The Cold River Lodge (Of the International Order of Good Templars SHS ed.) will go in a body to North Sandwich Friday afternoon and evening, to attend the dedication of the “brick church” as “Mountain View” lodge room. Large delegations from several neighboring lodges are expected. The Good Templars of North Sandwich are to be congratulated on so fine a hall, obtained so soon, and at so small expense. (The I.O.G.T. was a temperance organization. They evidently had bought the brick church, which was located across from today’s veterinary clinic, to use as a club room. In later years, this church was dismantled and the bricks recycled for use in the South Tamworth Industries factory. SHS ed.)

Waxing Moon Gardens

Waxing Moon’s latest newsletter is out: Here is an excerpt:
April started off a little on the slow side, but very quickly got busy. We’ve successfully seeded close to one third of our field space! The goal was to plant more, but we ran out of cover crop seed and had to reorder. Once it arrives we’ll be able to finish our seeding goals quickly. Having so much of the farm planted early has helped to keep our soil covered and in place through the rain, and will hopefully help with our weed pressure this spring. In addition to the cover crops we’ve planted several rounds of greens and roots, including lettuce, spinach, carrots, radish and more. We also got our sweet snap peas in and they are coming up beautifully. What a delectable treat those are. Later April had some nice warmth at the end so things are growing quickly despite the gray start of May. Although we are appreciative of the rain, it has slowed us down a bit and we are looking forward to some sunshine next week! You can sign up to receive news and updates about what’s growing on the farm at https://www.waxingmoongardens.com.

Reuse and Recycle Plastic Planting Pots

The Sandwich Recycling Group offers a couple of ideas to prevent plastic planting pots from going into land fill:
· Reuse - Save some for yourself -Ideas:
-Plant seeds of choice & zone rather than buying seedlings (in plastic). It’s fun to plan what seeds to plant with friends, & share seedlings).
-Local orgs. have fundraisers in the spring to thin & separate perennials & need (especially mod. & large size) pots to transplant into.
-Check with small nurseries that you buy your plants from, whether they take back their (or other) pots. for reuse.
· Recycle - Don't throw them in the recycling or trash dumpster.
-Rinse soil from pots, dry & bring to the transfer station & ask where to put
them. They will be brought to Lowes in Gilford or Tilton Garden Centers which
is a closed- loop recycling system to make new pots, which reduces the need for
virgin plastic while producing fewer carbon emissions.
-If you're headed to Tilton or Gilford (not Conway) bring your pots to the above
nurseries.
Remember, Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair are always better but closed-loop recycling is an important step along with these other actions to keep all plastic out of land-fill!

North Sandwich Friends

North Sandwich Friends Meeting invites friends and neighbors to join their weekly Meeting for Worship from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Sunday at the North Sandwich Meetinghouse (354 Quaker Whiteface Rd., N Sandwich, NH 03259).
Quakers, or “Friends,” have their roots in 17th century England. We have no explicit creed, nor does Quaker practice reflect a hierarchy among individuals. Believing that there is that of God in every person, Quakers welcome all who seek to join us in common spirit. Friends seek to live lives guided by six “testimonies”: Integrity, Simplicity, Peace, Equality, Community and Stewardship.
Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.

In the Round

In the Round takes place Sundays at 8:45 – 10:30 am at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Sandwich.
In the Round, a community discussion group for the past 25 years, meets weekly in Sandwich. The topic is always thought-provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome.
