The buzz around town is…. The hummingbirds have returned! Folks are scrubbing their feeders and putting them out, and enjoying watching our fast-flying friends.

Bike Clinic


The wonderful volunteers from Bearcamp Bikes are returning to the library to help you get your bikes running flawlessly and ready for another season of great riding! Saturday, May 3 from 10 till noon at the Library. They offer spring tune-ups, patches for flats &/or adjustments- all free. Everything you need to get riding immediately. Pumps for filling tires will be available. Bring a helmet to pedal in the parking lot if you want to test out your ride. Visit the Children's Center Spring Clean Up and Gear Swap the same day and make a morning of it in downtown Sandwich!


Scavenger Hunt


Saturday, May 10, 10:30 am, The Samuel H. Wentworth Library Youth Programming presents: Story time and outdoor scavenger hunt. Registration appreciated but not required – just drop in and join Ms. Kortney for some creative fun and snacks. Email [email protected] for more information.


Science Center Passes

Library History Talk


The final spring program for the Friends of the Samuel H. Wentworth Library will be held on May 1, starting at 6 PM in the Meeting Room at 35 Main Street, Center Sandwich, 03227. “A Light in the Darkness, A Sandwich Story,” will be presented by Jim Myland, Director, Sandwich Historical Society.
We all know that our library is one of the great cultural centers of our town.
Jim's focus for the evening will be the importance of the ‘Free Library’ movement in nineteenth century America and the history of the Samuel H. Wentworth Library and its importance as a center of learning, culture and education in Sandwich over the years. As with all his talks, there will be stories of past Sandwich personalities and events, historic photos to share, and news as reported in past editions of the Sandwich Reporter. Light refreshments will be served.


Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods


Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods is located at 740 Mt Israel Road in picturesque Sandwich, New Hampshire. There is plenty of free parking and room to prepare yourself for a lovely day on the trails.

May Contradance


The Sandwich Jam musicians are hosting another Family/ Community contradance on Saturday May 3, 6:30 to 8:30pm at Sandwich town hall. This is our second fundraiser for the town hall piano. Eric came to tune "Patti Piano" a few weeks ago and he was able to bring her voice partway to pitch. This is because it had been sooooo... long since she had been tuned, maybe at least 10 years. One more tuning by this professional is required to get her "up to snuff". 
This family dance is both kid-centric and easy for adults, too. No experience needed. If you're looking for an inexpensive fun family activity, all kids under 12 are free. Suggested donation is $4 per person. Dances will be taught and listeners are welcome, too. This is a wonderful New England tradition that is enjoying a revival especially among the young 'uns. And, it's live music by local musicians! Win/win!

Banjo Gathering

Music Jam


Hello, beginner to intermediate musicians. This is a reminder that we gather every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm at the Sandwich town hall for a free, fun-filled music jam. We play traditional, Celtic, oldtime, folk, and Americana tunes at a slow to moderate tempo. Bring your hobby out and start playing with others! It’s fun and inclusive. Right now, we have fiddles, penny whistle, flute, guitars, mandolin, acoustic bass, piano, concertina, and an autoharp!! Sheet music available. Plenty of parking, and an elevator lift if needed. Friends and Fiber


If music isn’t your thing, maybe yarn is! Every Wednesday evening, 6:00 – 8:30 pm, Library Community Room: Friends and Fiber Group: All abilities and ages of fiber enthusiasts (and those wanting to learn or just visit) are welcome to attend. Come with your knitting, crocheting, spinning, felting, rug hooking, embroidery, sewing or other fiber arts-related or hand-held project to work on. There is no charge and the group is casual and welcoming. While there is no formal instruction, if you have a question about your project, there is usually someone in attendance who can provide assistance. Experience is that the group is likely to gather on the off weeks as well as everyone enjoys the company and sharing of ideas. Children’s Center Cleanup and Outdoor Gear Swap


The Sandwich Children's Center (SCC) will be hosting a spring cleanup day and children's outdoor gear swap on Saturday, May 3rd, from 9am-12pm. This event is open to local community members and center families alike! Participants will help clean up the playground, and there will be a children's flower planting activity. Light refreshments provided.
Come and check out the items available at their children's outdoor gear swap, which is taking place during the playground cleanup event. These items will include bikes and trikes, scooters, helmets, beach and sand toys, sports gear, etc. Bring home some "new to you" items for your child to use this summer! Donations to SCC for items are encouraged, but not required. If you would like to donate items to this swap, SCC will be accepting drop-offs at SCC on Thursday, May 1st, between 8am-5pm. 
Stop by the SCC located at 54 Maple Street, Sandwich, May 3rd to support the Sandwich Children's Center, which serves many of the children and families in Sandwich and surrounding communities. 


Sandwich Farmers Market This Summer


The Sandwich Farmers Market will have a fresh new feel this summer! Mark your calendars! The market will take place Wednesdays, 3pm – 6pm at the Village Green in Sandwich. 2025 Season Dates are weekly starting June 4th through September 10th. Tamworth Community Food Center Welcomes You


If you or someone you know is in a position where access to food would be of help, please call the number provided. There are resources. The primary goal of the Tamworth Community Food Center is addressing hunger for those in need, serving the communities of Tamworth and Sandwich, NH. Our organization’s volunteers are trained and well-informed, knowing the value of awareness, action, and the effects of hunger. We are dedicated to providing fresh and nutritious food to people and families who may go without it. Our volunteers are devoted to understanding the significance and impact of community outreach. Donations from individuals, local organizations, businesses, and the towns provide stability and support, addressing the essentials of our citizens via sustainable solutions. It is our goal to tackle both short and long-term needs.

Community Food Center Update


The Community FoodCenter, (CFC) is a food pantry that serves families in Tamworth and Sandwich, reaching 85 households in 2024. It began at St. Andrew's-in-the-Valley on Whittier Road in Tamworth in the early 1980s and continues its service there. CFC gained 501(c)(3) status in 2008.
Our mission is to ensure that all residents of Tamworth and Sandwich have access to nutritious food, a mission that we can only achieve with your support.
A basic outline of services provided:
~Year-round food assistance plus added food and/or grocery store gift certificates at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
~Clients select the foods their family needs from our grocery list.
~Open to our clients every other Wednesday, 11 am to 3 pm. All of this happens with a 100% volunteer crew.
We rely on both cash and in-kind donations. Cash donations come from many generous individuals, organizations, and faith groups in the area, as well as from the towns of Tamworth and Sandwich. Thankfully, these resources have been stable. In-kind donations of food and other items come from the New Hampshire Food Bank (NHFB), the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and local businesses. They represent over half of the food and personal care items we distribute to our clients.
In 2024, we saw a 10% drop in in-kind donations from NHFB and USDA, while our caseload grew by 14%. This change has strained our resources and ability to meet the increasing demand. Recently, we learned that an additional $2500 of USDA funding is at risk. This funding is crucial for us. In the growing seasons of 2022 through 2024, these funds allowed CFC to purchase food from local farmers, which our clients sincerely appreciate. Due to these and other substantial cutbacks at USDA, we are reaching out directly to the communities we serve for donations to support our mission.

Senior Meals


Join the fun at our Wednesday lunch here in Sandwich! Sandwich senior meals take place on Wednesdays at noon at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Center Sandwich. Additionally, Moultonboro senior meals are held Monday through Thursday at the Moultonboro Community Center (formerly the Lions Club) at 139 Old Route 109. All are welcome.
Free will donations are most welcome.
The Moultonboro site chooses the menu and prepares it; food is delivered to Sandwich for serving.
Coffee is ready at 11:30. Desserts are usually set out by then; Call the Moultonboro site at 603-476-5110 for takeout orders or to sign up for home delivery.


Fire Permits Required


Fire Permits are required for all outside burning. With a Fire Permit you may burn brush up to 5 inches in diameter between 5pm and 9am. No debris or painted or treated wood and no pressure treated lumber. 
Fire Permits may be obtained at the Fire Station at 23 Wentworth Hill Road or at Town Hall during regular business hours or from the Warden. If you desire a seasonal permit for cooking or campfires, contact the Forest Fire Warden Jim Mykland at 603-387-7104.






Sandwich Transfer Station


Facility stickers are available at the town hall for 2025-2026. Facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station. Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box.
Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!


NexTrex Soft Plastic Recycling


The Sandwich Recycling Project's soft plastic recycling collection continues at the transfer station. This effort collects plastic which is sent to the Trex Company, where they turn it into composite furniture and decking. Sandwich has been involved with this program for three years now.
To participate, you just need to bring your clean and dry soft plastic contributions, and place them in the white NexTrex box across from the trash and regular recycling dumpsters. Thanks to Kevin and John for their support at the transfer station, and to Marin and Dwight Emery for retrieving and processing filled Trex containers with me.

In the meantime, some folks are dropping off plastic items we can’t recycle:
    • frozen food bags (ie that held frozen vegetables or fruits)
    • Pet food, pet treat and birdseed bags of any size
    • Garden soils including mulch, topsoil, manure and silage bags
    • six pack rings
    • bags with netting in them (i.e. some orange/clementine bags, potato bags
    • Bags and/or shrink wrap for deli meats, meat, chicken, fish and cheese items.
Also, bread bags should be cleaned of crumbs; fruit, nut, and cereal bags should be cleaned of residue. Turning them inside out or cutting them in half makes cleaning them a lot easier.
If you don't see your item on the acceptable/not acceptable list, try stretching it; if it stretches before it tears, it is acceptable; if it immediately tears, it is not acceptable.

North Sandwich Friends


North Sandwich Friends Meeting invites friends and neighbors to join their weekly Meeting for Worship from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Sunday at the North Sandwich Meetinghouse (354 Quaker Whiteface Rd., N Sandwich, NH 03259).
Quakers, or “Friends,” have their roots in 17th century England. We have no explicit creed, nor does Quaker practice reflect a hierarchy among individuals. Believing that there is that of God in every person, Quakers welcome all who seek to join us in common spirit. Friends seek to live lives guided by six “testimonies”: Integrity, Simplicity, Peace, Equality, Community and Stewardship.
Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.

In the Round, a community discussion group for the past 25 years, meets weekly in Sandwich. The topic is always thought-provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome.
