October 4, 1883: ~About 1776, according to the best authority, there were in Sandwich, about forty-six voters. The sense of the voters was taken on the question of American Independence. The number giving their adherence to the American cause was proportionately large, being all but eight. Three names are given of soldiers of the old French and Indian Wars living in Sandwich at that time; Benjamin Atkinson, Richard Bryant and Eliphalet Maxfield. Twenty-three soldiers of the war of the Revolution, either went from Sandwich or settled in this town after the war. They are Theodore Atkinson, Samuel Thompson, John Watson, John Kent, Andrew McGaffey, Weymouth Wallace, Stephen Ethridge, Nathaniel Eliphalet Smith, Aaron Quimby, Daniel Moulton, Thomas Burleigh, Andrew Neally, Josiah Bean, Simon Mason, Ebeneezer Cook, Stephen Webster who was, although we omitted to so state, also a soldier of the old French and Indian war and purchased his freedom from Indian captivity by running the gauntlet of Indian fire, John Beede, Simeon Smith, Elias Smith, Samual Moulton and Jeremy Hilton. Andrew McGaffey was wounded at Bunker Hill. So was also Weymouth Wallace, of whom it is reported, when the bullet of the enemy went crashing through his wrist, the shock caused the gun to fall from his hands, but though his ammunition was exhausted, and the charge of the enemy was sharp, close and incessant, he withstood the galling fire till he recovered his gun. ~Since writing the above we learn that Daniel Collins, Wm. Fergurson, William Page who was said to have been a deserter, and thereby failed to obtain a pension, and Moses Page were also soldiers of the revolution. Eliphalet Smith escaped British captivity, by receiving the kicks and buffets of his pursuing enemies while assuming the repose and position of the dead, and so counterfeited death as to escape the vigilance of his enemies. ~As near as we can learn, the first birth in town was Hunkin Hilton, son of Ien and Abigail Hilton, he was born on April 29, 1769. Mrs. Hilton, being the first white woman to come into the town, for which she received a new calico dress from the town of Exeter, from whence she came. North Sandwich Friends North Sandwich Friends Meeting invites friends and neighbors to join their weekly Meeting for Worship from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Sunday at the North Sandwich Meetinghouse (354 Quaker Whiteface Rd., N Sandwich, NH 03259). Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other. In the Round Discontinued After meeting weekly for the past 17 years, In the Round has come to a close. The group was formed in 2008 by Sheila Brown, wife of interim minister David Morgan, so that people could explore meaningful topics and issues of mutual interest in a context outside of church and religion. It first met at Mocha Rising, where The Foothills Cafe is now, at the eccentric time of 8:45 Sunday morning to allow a 9:45 break for those who wished to go to Church at 10 - continuing on as particulars allowed. On Sheila's departure, rather than closing, the group chose to continue meeting, becoming intentionally leaderless. Each week, the following week’s topic would often flow from unaddressed aspects of the previous topic, and one of the attendees would arise to research and run the next discussion. Through the ensuing 17 years, ItR met more than 800 times addressing a wide variety of topics among many and varied participants, mostly from Sandwich but also with some farther flung neighbors and visitors. Most recently the group met at the Benz Center on Sunday Mornings. In the Round has provided a form of intellectual and spiritual community that is part of what makes Sandwich Sandwich. In the words of Tom Thiel, one of the regulars, “All things must pass. We are grateful for this spontaneous meeting of minds over all these many years.”
