The Friends of the Samuel H. Wentworth Library Holiday Book sale continues! The tables will remain up and shoppers can self-checkout during open library hours until 12/24. There are lots of great quality books, puzzles, movies and gifts. Some new and very gift-worthy, some gently used. A wonderful selection of books for kids and many holiday titles. One-of-a-kind gifts that are great for the youngest gift givers who may need to stretch their limited "piggy bank balances" as they shop for family members! If that's not enough...there are also comfy chairs to sit in for a spell and “product test” a few titles, or to rest your feet in between visiting all the wonderful Christmas in the Village locations. Find the Holiday Book Sale in the Community Room, lower level of the library, 35 Main Street..

A Christmas Carol

Sandwich local, Chris Boldt, will be back at the library again this December for a dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Join us Friday, December 12 at 6:00 pm for this free event. The reading will run approximately 90 minutes (with no intermission). The library will close early at 4:00pm on the 12th and reopen at 5:30 for seating. Space is limited so please email the library or call (603)-284-6665 to reserve your seat!

Not that Thanksgiving and Christmas in the Village have come and gone, it is time to announce the roster for Books Sandwiched In. Please join the Friends of the Samuel H. Annual Town Christmas Party

For almost 90 years the Sandwich Woman’s Club has been helping to welcome the Christmas season for the children of Sandwich, and this year is no exception!
On Sunday, December 14 at 1:00 Santa plans to make an appearance at the Town Hall just for this event! He will have gifts for all the children and has asked Franz Nicolay to take the children’s pictures with him. The Woman’s Club will be baking cookies for the party, and we’ll again have hats, gloves, mittens and socks provided by Woman’s Club members for kids to take home.
And this year there will be something new: a special appearance by pied piper and storyteller Papa Joe Gaudet, who will entertain the kids with a short interactive performance. The Traveling Storyteller/Performer Papa Joe is one of those characters you expect to see wandering through the pages of an old children’s picture book. And when you see him telling a tale, long beard wagging, the explosion of expression, the range of voices, the depth of emotions; you’ll know some of the reasons he is so loved by his listeners.

Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods

CSVW trails are beautiful! If you love cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in a pristine winter forest then CSVW is perfect for you! Bring your adventurous spirit to the sanctuary this weekend and break trail in the fresh snow. CSVW is located at 740 Mt Israel Road in Sandwich, New Hampshire.
Spend the whole day or just a couple of hours at CSVW. Trails are open every day from dawn until dusk free of charge with plenty of parking. Please sign in at the VISITOR’S KIOSK where you will find trail maps and other information. Enjoy!
A Look Back

Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Below is one excerpt. Relax in your favorite reading spot and enjoy reading a few minutes of Sandwich history. Visit sandwichhistorical.org and click on miscellany and mystery to read more.
December 10, 1891:
~North Sandwich – A young daughter of Hiram Corliss was bitten by a horse last week.
~Leveret Felch is reported to have bought of R.B. Durgin the mill and home where Mr. Durgin lives. We wish Mr. Felch prosperity in his new enterprise.
~Mrs. Sherman Quimby is one of those who makes it pay to keep hens. Eleven hens in ten months commencing Jan.1, 1891, yielded between seventeen and eighteen hundred eggs. Valued at twenty-seven dollars and thirty-two cents. Cleared $9.10 over and above all expenses, and has 14 nice pullets on hand which have lain since the first of last month 200 eggs. This is nearly one dollar per head clear profit and the plant enlarged to sixteen pullets and two cocks. What investment on the farm could show as good returns. The secret, of course, is the attention bestowed upon them. In this as in all other things the best results are only obtained by the greatest of efforts.

Christmas Movie Night

The Inter Lakes High School Class of 2028 will be hosting a Christmas movie and cookie party for elementary school students on Saturday December 13th. 5:30-7:30 at the ILMHS Auditorium. The cost is $15/student or $20/family. Wear your Christmas pjs and watch the Grinch!

Twelfth Night

Advice to the Players, Sandwich’s Shakespeare Theater group, presents their last show of the 2025 season, Twelfth Night, on December 13 at 4:00 pm. This holiday reading, mingled with their ‘Shakes on Tap’ style performance, is hosted by their partner Castle in the Clouds. The presentation will be brought to life by a cast of familiar Advice to the Players’ faces. Join along to laugh, swoon, and celebrate! A cover charge of $15.00 will apply for food and beverage service during the program. Seating limited, so register to secure your spot, and arrive at 4:00 to get those orders in. Register at https://www.castleintheclouds.org/event/shakespeare-on-tap-twelfth-night/.

Sandwich Singers Holiday Concerts

Another Christmas tradition arising from the talented Sandwich folk – the Sandwich Singers Holiday Concerts, with three dates and locations:
December 10, Melvin Village Community Church, Melvin Village
December 14, Methodist Meeting House, Center Sandwich
January 2, St. Andrew's-in-the-Valley, Tamworth

One Voice Christmas Program

This Christmas season marks the 26th annual One Voice Christmas Program in the Lakes Region. The One Voice Christmas program has become a favorite Holiday tradition! One Voice is a regional Christian performance group with members from many local churches, including a number of performers from Sandwich! This year’s program, Wonder of Wonders, features fun holiday favorites, new songs of the season, and tender Christmas reflections featuring choral music and solos, professional dance, and thought-provoking drama, with performers ranging in age from four to seventy-four! There are three opportunities to take in this amazing show at the Inter-Lakes Community Auditorium, 1 Laker Lane, Meredith:
Friday, December 19, 7:00 pm
Saturday, December 20, 3:00 pm
Sunday, December 21, 3:00 pm
No tickets required, donations are gratefully received.

TREATY

Local Actor Rebecca Cole writes: If you have seen the posters for TREATY around town and wonder what it was…here goes. TREATY is a Play. A play about real people. People who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 for creating and help to ratify the TPNW—Treaty on the Prohibition Nuclear Weapons…
This wonderful, funny, provocative, true play is traveling the world and it is landing in our town for the Solstice. December 19, 20, 21st. 2 actors from NYC, 1 from Rhode Island (via Africa) and Me. This is truly a labor of love and an inspiring call to action for real Peace on Earth.
I have loved working on this play. It weaves a fascinating true story through a maize of international obstacles and diplomacy. Each time the play is performed it pivots and weaves local issues with thoughtful world wide challenges. It tells the story of a new nuclear weapons treaty – one that’s trying to give the power to eliminate nuclear weapons to the states, and people, who don’t possess them. I’ve never done or seen a show like it. I promise you a wonderful night or afternoon. It is appropriate for 16 year olds and 96 year olds and everyone in between. It will give your family inspiring and hopeful things to talk about over the holidays, for sure! The Foothills is offering a Dinner Theater Package on Friday and Saturday Night as well as our usual Brunch before the Sunday Matinee.

Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.
