Bit of a January thaw in Sandwich, which we all hope will remove the remains of the ice on our driveways leftover from the earlier ice storm. After that, a powdery layer of snow will be perfect for the cross-country trails at the fairgrounds and a snowshoe trek through the woods.

Sandwich Ski Trail System

A note from Ole Anderson, director of Sandwich Parks and Recreation: The Nordic ski trails in the center are open for use. We want to thank the Sandwich Fair Association for their support for these trails. There are some bare spots, and lots of icy spots. I would like to request some considerations when using these trails. You are all more than welcome, and encouraged, to use the trails at any point. This trail system is used by SCS Nordic program 1:15-2:20 on Tuesdays, the Sandwich Parks and Rec Nordic Program on Saturday’s, and also used by the Inter-Lakes Nordic ski team on several afternoons a week. It is possible the trails will be busy on a weekday afternoon, but by no means closed, during these Inter-Lakes practices.
Closed Mon 2/16 All Day for Middle School Championship Race
I would like to ask anyone who uses the trails for non-skiing purposes to respect that these are first and foremost groomed trails for skiers. If you feel this is the best place to take a stroll, whether alone, in a group, or with a dog, please keep your foot traffic to the edge of the groomed area. Footprints through the groomed area can severely and dangerously impact the terrain for the skiers. Please keep foot traffic to the outermost portion of the groomed area. These trails are not for sledding, please do not sled or allow your children to sled on the trails. If you do take your dog, please pick up their poop. Not doing so is unacceptable anywhere and our groomed Nordic ski trails are no exception. Porta-Potties are not trash cans, if you wouldn’t put it in your toilet, don’t put it in porta-potty.
I appreciate your cooperation and look forward to seeing you out on the trails! Many thanks to Steve Olafsen for trail grooming assistance!
If you have any questions, program or event ideas, or would like to volunteer please contact Ole at [email protected].

Waxing Moon Gardens

From Waxing Moon’s January Newsletter:
In little over a week the sun will be setting at 5pm which is always welcome after the final few dark weeks of the year. The return of daylight always ignites excitement and helps motivate us to begin the in-depth planning process for the season to come. After taking a month away from all things farm related, we can say that we’re looking forward to planning out all the delicious food we’re going to grow. Now that we have several seasons under our belts we’re starting to see patterns in what we grow well and where we still struggle, and are going to do our best to plan accordingly. Hopefully a few tweaks here and there will help things run more smoothly next summer!
We’d love to hear from you! If there is something you think we should try and grow let us know!
You can sign up to receive news and updates about what’s growing on the farm at https://www.waxingmoongardens.com.
Waxing Moon Gardens is located at 222 Whiteface Intervale, North Sandwich.

Something Wild Farm

Richard Masta of Something Wild Farm writes: “My favorite joy as a farmer is showing folks the birds on pasture. From my casual egg customers who want a glimpse at the operation to my 9-year-old city-boy nephew who needs to step in poop once or twice a year to feel like a human, we need to hear the Egg Song. We need to see the birds bounce and float and two-step across this curved and beautiful Earth. As farmer folk hero Joel Salatin says, he loves to make the earthworms dance. We make our critters dance, and we dance along. And I shimmied and shaked that short ride home to the farm as the chicks sang strong cheepy songs from their little box.” You can find more of Richard’s writing at somethingwildfarm.com/blog. Something Wild is located in North Sandwich.

Civics Refresh

Another hopeful outcome of these classes is to encourage and teach respectful, constructive conversation. Civics Refresh classes will work with conversation guidelines to encourage active listening and wise speech. Civics Refresh will focus on civics and the rights and responsibilities citizens practice to build and maintain a strong, well-run government. Political opinions and policies are not the focus of these classes. The purpose is to encourage non-partisan dialogue while reviewing how governments are structured and function, highlighting the role and responsibilities of a considerate, knowledgeable citizenry. Civics Refresh will take place on the third Wednesday of the month, beginning January 21. It will be held at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Master Plan Writers Wanted

From the Sandwich Master Plan Committee:
Sandwich stepped up in a big way for the Master Plan survey. We received 695 responses, an exceptional level of participation for a town our size. This gives us a strong foundation of community input. Now we move into the next phase: turning that input into well-organized sections of the updated Master Plan.
The Master Plan Committee is looking for volunteer writers and contributors to help develop these chapters. This is, at its core, a writing project — but you do not need to be a professional writer to participate. We welcome residents from all backgrounds who can help summarize information, organize ideas, and clearly communicate what the community has said.
What Volunteers Will Do
· Draft one section or chapter of the Master Plan (topics assigned with your input).
· Use the relevant SurveyMonkey results provided.
· Identify additional data your section may need; the Committee will help locate it.
· Follow a shared structure and schedule so sections are consistent.
· Collaborate with our editor for guidance and refinement.
Helpful Qualifications
· Ability to write clearly and concisely.
· Comfort organizing information or working from data summaries.
· Good follow-through on timelines.
· Interest in local issues, even if you’re not an expert.
· Willingness to revise your draft based on editor and Committee feedback.
· A collaborative spirit and appreciation for Sandwich’s long-term planning needs.
What You Don’t Need
· Professional writing or planning experience.
· Technical expertise in your topic area.
· Prior knowledge of the full Master Plan structure — it will evolve.
If you’re interested or have questions, please email [email protected] with a brief note about your background and topic areas you might feel comfortable exploring.

Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.
