We are nearing the end of July, and that means Sandwich Old Home Week is right around the corner. Old Home Week in Sandwich began in 1899, and this year marks the 126th celebration of this special week. For 2024, the Old Home Week events begin on Saturday, August 3, and run through Sunday, August 11. Old Home Week is the highlight of the summer in Sandwich, and a great time to visit our historic town. Be sure to pick up a copy of next week’s Meredith News, where the Sandwich News Column will highlight all the great events taking place during the special week. If you have been thinking of visiting our beautiful, historic town, I highly recommend Old Home Week!

Samuel H. Wentworth Library

There’s a lot happening for families and kids at the library this summer including the annual Summer Reading Program. This summer’s theme is “Adventure Begins At Your Library!”
This week:
7/26 Friday morning at 10:30 is preschool storytime led by Hannah & Kourtney.
7/27 Saturday is a kids' Read-A-Thon from 10am - noon. Hannah and Kourtney will be reading stories from 10:30-11:30 for family storytime. Independent readers (9+) and families can join in at any time during the morning and stay as time allows. We'll have snacks at noon to share with readers that finish out the morning.
7/27 Saturday and Monday 7/29 are both drop-off days for the "Stuffie Sleepover" that is happening Monday night. Kids are invited to bring a stuffie to the library for a slumber party! Pick up is Tuesday, July 30. Each stuffie will bring home a memory book of photos from their library adventures to share.
~Summer Reading Raffle: Through August 10. Visit the library each week, check out books and enter your name to win. The more you read, write, or draw, the more opportunities to enter. All ages are encouraged to participate.
~Super Summer Reading Program Finale: Saturday, August 10, 10-noon. We’ll celebrate a summer of exploration and literacy in the Sandwich Fairgrounds, with games, the Summer Reading Program raffle drawing, crafts, and more.
~Fisher Cats Games: By reading 5 books this summer, you will win 2 free tickets to see a Fisher Cats baseball game.

Sandwich Historical Society

Please come enjoy this summer’s exhibit, “The Photograph and Memory,” featuring over 80 images from our collection, tracing the evolution of photography as it records and shapes our culture. "The Photograph and Memory" exhibition, at the Sandwich Historical Society. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday: 10am-4pm; FREE! See your town through the ages come alive once again, through your viewing. Over 80 images!
Our beautiful Gift Shop will also be open highlighting new and familiar products as well as some wonderful layout changes. More new products arriving in July! Something for everyone – and a great way to support the Society!

Community Yard Sale

The Community Church of Sandwich will be hosting a community yard sale at the Hodge Building on the Sandwich Fairgrounds as part of Old Home Week and our "Awareness Moment" Event (held at 12 Church Street, Baptist Meetinghouse).  This is a fundraiser for our "Awareness Moment on Mental Health".  All proceeds benefit two local mental health organizations that serve our community:  Northern Human Services and NAMI.
Thursday, August 8, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the Hodge Building, Sandwich Fairgrounds;  Set-up/Breakdown:  8:30 AM / 4:00 PM, Cost:  $20 per table / non-refundable / cash or check:   payable to Community Church of Sandwich with YARD SALE on the memo line. Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery

Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery is currently hosting works of Tracy Penn, with her new installation entitled “Ubiquitous”. As the title implies, Penn calls upon her talents as an upcycling artist to bring to our attention the proliferation of microplastics in the environment and in our bodies. The exhibit helps us to better understand our use of plastics in our lives and the environment. Next up, beginning August 3rd, the Gallery will be featuring Dayna Talbot: Black White and Then Some—Multimedia pieces made from a vast array of materials. Scholarship Deadline Approaches

If you are a Sandwich resident and recent high school graduate working on your first undergraduate degree (full time) or full time at a tech school, you are eligible to receive the Sandwich Woman’s Club Book and Supply Money Scholarship. Students have until August 1, 2024 to write a note to Sandwich Woman's Club, PO Box 485, Center Sandwich, NH 03227. You may also email [email protected].
In the note you should introduce yourself and include your name and contact information, your goals for the future and your plan to reach those goals.
Contact info needs to include the following: Name, home address, and where to send book and supply money (physical), email or phone in case we need to contact you. Students may request Book and Supply Money each year (no more than 4 years) of their undergraduate career. Checks are written to the students by the end of September and do not interfere with other financial aid awards.


Sandwich Woman’s Club Meeting

The next meeting of the Sandwich Woman's Club will be on Thursday, July 25th, at the Benz center. (18 Heard Road, Sandwich)  We are trying out a new format... so the meeting will start at 5:00, with the presentation at 5:15.  Meeting will conclude at 6:15, with a brief executive meeting afterwards.
Snacks are welcome.

Advice To The Players is a unique company of theater professionals, enthusiastic community members and energetic teens that has been performing Shakespeare and offering workshops in New Hampshire's Lakes and Mountains Region since 1999.


Artisans on the Green
The Sandwich Home Industries is pleased to present their annual Artists on the Green on Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 10:00-4:00 on the Quimby Green and in front of the gallery in Center Sandwich. With over thirty-five artisans displaying and selling their work, we will welcome many returning artists back and several new craftsmen. The show features painters and printmakers, jewelry, fiber arts, wood turning, and pottery, to name a few. The Sandwich Women’s Club will host their annual luncheon and raffle. We will fill the air with live music throughout the day, so come to Center Sandwich and enjoy the day!


Center Sandwich Fine Craft Gallery

The Center Sandwich Fine Craft Gallery, 32 Main Street, Sandwich, is now open 7 days a week, until mid-October. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 12 ‘til 5. Many new exciting craftsmen have been added to the gallery this year. Come check them out! In addition , they are offering several classes in the final days of July and the month of August. There is still time to register for two exciting classes- Stenciled Floor Clothes on July 25th and 26th- make one stenciled design floor cloth and a second Diamond Floor Cloth in this two-day class, or learn the art of Batik and Shibori Dyeing on July 29th and 31st. in another two classes. Woman’s Club Raffle

The Sandwich Woman's Club Old Home Week Raffle is rapidly approaching, and our members have been very busy collecting lots of fun, useful or eclectic items. But, ya know, it really isn't about winning something, it's about providing Book & Supply money for our college students AND, perhaps more importantly, reminding our students that they have a community behind them, wishing them success.
Please consider buying tickets. They are $1 each or 6 for $5. Tickets will be on sale at the Sandwich Farmers’ Market Saturdays 10-12. Tickets can also be purchased from members of the Sandwich Woman's Club.
Items you might win include:
Services provided by local businesses, tickets to local concerts and plays, local museum passes, a goat hike, 2 nights of camping, a storytelling event, many beautiful handmade works of art, gift cards to local restaurants, stores, farms and shops, and more! The drawing will be on August 8th at the Artisans on the Green, at 1:00 pm.


Sandwich Children’s Center Hiring

Sandwich Children's Center is currently seeking a dedicated and experienced School Age Coordinator to join our team. This position is part-time, working from Tuesday to Thursday, with hours from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement engaging and age-appropriate activities for school-age children.
- Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of children during program hours.
- Foster a positive and inclusive environment for children to learn and grow.
- Collaborate with other staff members and parents to create a supportive and nurturing community.
- Maintain open and effective communication with parents/guardians regarding children's progress and any concerns.

Music Jam

Hello, beginner to intermediate musicians. This is a reminder that we gather every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm at the Sandwich town hall for a free, fun-filled music jam. We play traditional, Celtic, oldtime, folk, and Americana tunes at a slow to moderate tempo. Bring your hobby out and start playing with others! It’s fun and inclusive. Right now, we have fiddles, penny whistle, flute, guitars, mandolin, acoustic bass, piano, concertina, and an autoharp!! Sheet music available. Plenty of parking, and an elevator lift if needed. Friends and Fiber

If music isn’t your thing, maybe yarn is! Every Wednesday evening, 6:00 – 8:30 pm, Library Community Room: Friends and Fiber Group: All abilities and ages of fiber enthusiasts (and those wanting to learn or just visit) are welcome to attend. Come with your knitting, crocheting, spinning, felting, rug hooking, embroidery, sewing or other fiber arts-related or hand-held project to work on. There is no charge and the group is casual and welcoming. While there is no formal instruction, if you have a question about your project, there is usually someone in attendance who can provide assistance. Experience is that the group is likely to gather on the off weeks as well as everyone enjoys the company and sharing of ideas. Live Owl Program

Marcia and Mark Wilson, owl experts, will introduce you to live owls UP CLOSE as they share their knowledge and insights. This entertaining and educational presentation begins with Mark’s interactive slide program featuring some of his finest owl photography. After much anticipation, Marcia brings the owls out one by one. Each bird is safely perched on her glove as she walks into the audience, providing intimate views of these secretive birds of prey.

Tamworth Community Food Center Welcomes You

If you or someone you know is in a position where access to food would be of help, please call the number provided. There are resources. The primary goal of the Tamworth Community Food Center is addressing hunger for those in need, serving the communities of Tamworth and Sandwich, NH. Senior Meals

Sandwich senior meals are held at 12:00 noon every Wednesday at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Center Sandwich. Moultonboro senior meals are held Monday through Thursday at the Moultonboro Community Center (formerly Old Lions Club) at 139 Old Route 109. 
All are welcome at both locations. Coffee is ready at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, at 11:30!
Come early and stay later to have more time to enjoy the company of others!

Sandwich Farmers’ Market

The Sandwich Farmers’ Market will be set up at the village green in front of Sandwich Home Industries, Center Sandwich from 10 till noon each Saturday throughout the summer. Vegetables, eggs, meats, syrup, jams, pies, and locally made crafts! Chestnut Meadow Farm, Mountain Breeze Farm, and the Artisan Center of North Sandwich are among the local farmers and producers you will meet there.


Artisan Center of North Sandwich

The Artisan Center of North Sandwich, located in the former Wayside Farm sales building, is chock full of creations from local artisans: Jewelry, pottery, unique gifts such as Ukrainian Eggs and Carolina Snowflakes, rope and cloth baskets, and of course Wayside Farm’s Great Northern Berries Jam.
Open 9-5 daily by self-checkout. In July and August, one of our artisans will be on hand all day Friday and Saturday afternoons. Fridays will feature a wonderful array of classes you can take to create something of your own or to gift to a friend or relative. Classes are limited to 6 people per class and take place on Fridays at 9:30 and 1:30. Each class is approximately 2 hours in length. The cost includes materials and take-home supplies, payable by cash, check, Venmo, or PayPal. Here is one upcoming class:
Japanese Temari Balls are exchanged with friends as a good luck and well wishes gift. Perle cotton is wrapped around a Styrofoam ball covered in soft yarn and thread. Wendy Shambaugh will lead attendees in the process following a traditional design. All the supplies will be provided: ball, yarn, thread, Perle cotton, needle, and several designs to try on your own at home.

Chestnut Meadow Farm

We will be taking part in the Sandwich Farmers’ Market every Saturday throughout the summer from 10 till noon on the village green in Sandwich. The lettuce is doing great this year! Plus, we have fresh garlic, cucumbers, summer squashes, and an assortment of other veggies. Chestnut Meadow is located at 146 Wentworth Hill Road, (Route 109) Sandwich. Booty Family Farm

Papa Beans Ice Cream

Many flavors to choose from with all our ice cream base made using Hatchland Farm’s milk and cream from North Haverhill, NH. Since we are a small batch homemade ice cream maker, each batch is unique in flavor and texture. Some of our flavor's bases have different amounts of milk, cream, sugar, egg yolks and other stabilizers than others. Orange creamsicle is back and we have added some with chocolate chips. Household Hazardous Waste Collection Dates

Keep our Lakes Region clean and beautiful. Residents and taxpayers may bring up to 10 gallons or 50 pounds of household hazardous waste to one of our regional collection sites. Collection sites closest to Sandwich:

Meredith Department of Public Works Garage, 17 Jenness Hill Road, Meredith, July 27.
Tuftonboro Transfer Station, 20 Sargent’s Crossing off Rt. 171, September 26.

Sandwich Transfer Station

2023-2024 facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station (and swimming facilities). Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box. Transfer Station use is strictly prohibited for vehicles without stickers/passes (even for longtime residents!).
Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!


Harvest Church of the Lakes Region

Harvest Church invites you to join them at 80 Bean Road in Moultonborough, Sundays at 10:00 am for contemporary worship and Biblical teaching. Harvest’s mission is to Love God, Love Others, and Go into All the World. Harvest Church has several meetings during the week as well: a men’s Bible Study on Mondays in Sandwich, a women’s Bible Study on Monday afternoons in Center Harbor, and a home church meeting on Thursdays in Sandwich. In the Round

In the Round, a community discussion group for the past 24 years, meets weekly in Sandwich. Meetings are Sunday, in person at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road. Doors open at 8:30, discussion begins at 8:45. The discussion generally runs until 10am, or a bit longer. The topic is always thought provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome.


North Sandwich Friends (Quaker) Meeting

North Sandwich Friends Meeting is open for in-person worship every Sunday from 10 – 11 a.m. in the 1881 historic Meeting House. The Meeting House is located at 354 Quaker Whiteface Road in North Sandwich, just north of the Durgin covered bridge.
