We are nearing the end of July, and that means Sandwich Old Home Week is right around the corner. Old Home Week in Sandwich began in 1899, and this year marks the 126th celebration of this special week. For 2024, the Old Home Week events begin on Saturday, August 3, and run through Sunday, August 11. Old Home Week is the highlight of the summer in Sandwich, and a great time to visit our historic town. Be sure to pick up a copy of next week’s Meredith News, where the Sandwich News Column will highlight all the great events taking place during the special week. Wentworth Library There’s a lot happening for families and kids at the library this summer including the annual Summer Reading Program. This summer’s theme is “Adventure Begins At Your Library!” This week: 7/26 Friday morning at 10:30 is preschool storytime led by Hannah & Kourtney. 7/27 Saturday is a kids' Read-A-Thon from 10am - noon. Hannah and Kourtney will be reading stories from 10:30-11:30 for family storytime. Independent readers (9+) and families can join in at any time during the morning and stay as time allows. We'll have snacks at noon to share with readers that finish out the morning. 7/27 Saturday and Monday 7/29 are both drop-off days for the "Stuffie Sleepover" that is happening Monday night. Kids are invited to bring a stuffie to the library for a slumber party! Pick up is Tuesday, July 30. Each stuffie will bring home a memory book of photos from their library adventures to share. ~Summer Reading Raffle: Through August 10. Community Yard Sale The Community Church of Sandwich will be hosting a community yard sale at the Hodge Building on the Sandwich Fairgrounds as part of Old Home Week and our "Awareness Moment" Event (held at 12 Church Street, Baptist Meetinghouse). This is a fundraiser for our "Awareness Moment on Mental Health". All proceeds benefit two local mental health organizations that serve our community: Northern Human Services and NAMI. As the title implies, Penn calls upon her talents as an upcycling artist to bring to our attention the proliferation of microplastics in the environment and in our bodies. The exhibit helps us to better understand our use of plastics in our lives and the environment. Next up, beginning August 3rd, the Gallery will be featuring Dayna Talbot: Black White and Then Some—Multimedia pieces made from a vast array of materials. Scholarship Deadline Approaches If you are a Sandwich resident and recent high school graduate working on your first undergraduate degree (full time) or full time at a tech school, you are eligible to receive the Sandwich Woman’s Club Book and Supply Money Scholarship. Students have until August 1, 2024 to write a note to Sandwich Woman's Club, PO Box 485, Center Sandwich, NH 03227. You may also email [email protected]. In the note you should introduce yourself and include your name and contact information, your goals for the future and your plan to reach those goals. Contact info needs to include the following: Name, home address, and where to send book and supply money (physical), email or phone in case we need to contact you. Students may request Book and Supply Money each year (no more than 4 years) of their undergraduate career. Checks are written to the students by the end of September and do not interfere with other financial aid awards. Sandwich Woman’s Club Meeting The next meeting of the Sandwich Woman's Club will be on Thursday, July 25th, at the Benz center. (18 Heard Road, Sandwich) We are trying out a new format... so the meeting will start at 5:00, with the presentation at 5:15. Meeting will conclude at 6:15, with a brief executive meeting afterwards. Artisans on the Green The Sandwich Home Industries is pleased to present their annual Artists on the Green on Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 10:00-4:00 on the Quimby Green and in front of the gallery in Center Sandwich. With over thirty-five artisans displaying and selling their work, we will welcome many returning artists back and several new craftsmen. The show features painters and printmakers, jewelry, fiber arts, wood turning, and pottery, to name a few. The Sandwich Women’s Club will host their annual luncheon and raffle. We will fill the air with live music throughout the day, so come to Center Sandwich and enjoy the day! Residents and taxpayers may bring up to 10 gallons or 50 pounds of household hazardous waste to one of our regional collection sites. Collection sites closest to Sandwich: Moultonborough Highway Garage, 68 Hwy Garage Rd., Moultonborough, August 3; Meredith Department of Public Works Garage, 17 Jenness Hill Road, Meredith, July 27. Sandwich Transfer Station 2023-2024 facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station (and swimming facilities). Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box. Transfer Station use is strictly prohibited for vehicles without stickers/passes (even for longtime residents!). Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors! Harvest Church of the Lakes Region Harvest Church invites you to join them at 80 Bean Road in Moultonborough, Sundays at 10:00 am for contemporary worship and Biblical teaching. Meetings are Sunday, in person at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road. Doors open at 8:30, discussion begins at 8:45. The discussion generally runs until 10am, or a bit longer. The topic is always thought provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome. North Sandwich Friends (Quaker) Meeting North Sandwich Friends Meeting is open for in-person worship every Sunday from 10 – 11 a.m. in the 1881 historic Meeting House. The Meeting House is located at 354 Quaker Whiteface Road in North Sandwich, just north of the Durgin covered bridge. Community Church of Sandwich Summer church services have moved to the Baptist Meeting House at 6 Church Street. Service at 10 am, fellowship follows.
