In this timely and epic novel, a Palestinian and an Israeli lose young daughters to terrorists. Based on a true story, the grieving fathers become friends and peace advocates. A Look Back Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Grab a warm drink, settle down in your favorite reading spot and enjoy! For more, visit https://www.sandwichhistorical.org/miscellany-and-mystery.html January 15, 1931 ~A return basketball game Sandwich vs. Center Ossipee was played at Ossipee last Saturday evening. The game was out of the ordinary in several respects, being classed as one of the fastest and at times furious, but when resulting in a tie, the home team asked for an overtime period, which was gentlemanly and graciously granted by the Sandwich team. At the end of the overtime period the score still remained a tie. The Ossipee team, still unsatisfied, demanded another period which was refused by the visiting team. The Ossipee team then refused to pay the guarantee. Possibly this may be the way basketball is conducted in Ossipee but at Sandwich it would not be tolerated and we doubt that the majority of the Ossipee people consider this a true sportsmanlike spirit. In sports, as well as business, we like the game played square. ~Ice houses in Sandwich are being filled with some very fine ice from Little’s pond. Charles Cram has charge of the cutting and Harry Smith is doing the drawing of the ice. Something Wild Farm Here is an excerpt from Something Wild’s January Blog entry: When this farm hangs its last Christmas wreath, it sleeps ‘til sugar season. We live in a culture of calendar years and New Year’s resolutions, but on planet Earth things go to sleep when it snows and they wake up when it melts. Oh, the work never stops. I still have to give the sheep hay, check their water, feed the chickens, collect their eggs, boop their little beaks and tell them I love them. I’m even gathering up the pluckiness to venture into the wind and install spouts for the maple tubing. Something I could have done in October, but so goes it, when you’re as wild as I am sometimes. The hard work never stops. Located at 430 North Sandwich Road. Pasture raised eggs, Maple Syrup, handmade candles, and more. Contact Richard at [email protected], and check out their website, somethingwildfarm.com. Booty Family Farm We are a certified organic farm located at 610 Mount Israel Road and have been in operation for over 40 years Stop by any time or call/text Steve at 860-227-0397. Thanks for supporting local, Steve Bartlett and the Booty Family Farm. Waxing Moon Gardens Annual vegetables are really where we put our focus and it feels like last year we really got a good understanding of where we fit in. Our carrots have been a favorite ever since we started, but we didn’t quite realize just how much people love arugula and broccolini as well. Tomatoes and zucchini have always moved quickly, still we were a little surprised when we looked back and saw how much people really took home. Our CSA is live on our website https://www.waxingmoongardens.com/onlinestore/csa-store. Waxing Moon Gardens is located at 222 Whiteface Intervale, North Sandwich. Sandwich Creamery 2 Maple Ridge Road, Sandwich. Self-serve, locally made ice cream and cheese. As for some of the cheese you will be seeing next year, one has already made a brief appearance, but will now be seen with more consistency: the “Olde English” cheddar. What makes the Olde English so distinct is the fact that we have allowed for a rind to grow. This year we will be moving the Olde English into our older round molds and cloth binding them, closer to the traditional style of its making. This will allow for a richer, more consistent growth of the rind and better flavor. Open from 9 am until 9 pm daily. Papa Beans Ice Cream Currently stocked in our freezer: Ice Cream Pies, Ice Cream Cakes, Quarts - Sweet Cream (better than vanilla), Maple, Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Chip, Pumpkin, Cinnamon, Chocolate chip Cookie Dough, Mint Chip. Call the Town Clerk's office at 603-284-7113 with any questions. Alison Gage, Sandwich Town Clerk/Tax Collector Selectmen’s Notes Notes from the January 13 meeting: The Selectmen are aware of neighboring communities that have shifted from an on-call fire department model to full-time staff to ensure response for calls. A key focus of the Board’s 2025 budget discussions has been the inclusion of a part-time permanent position (Assistant Chief) for our fire department. This proposed addition would supplement the existing full-time Fire Chief position, which was established in 2015 as the sole full-time role within the department. By introducing this new part-time position, the Selectmen aim to better support the department's capacity including emergency response while also providing coverage for the Chief and better serving the community. In both the work session and regular meeting, the Board spent a great deal of time discussing an employee wage system for implementation in the 2025 budget. This fall, the Board received a report from Municipal Resources Inc. with recommendations for an employee wage system; the Board has spent multiple meetings reviewing recommendations to understand cost impact and feasibility for implementing such system. The Board seeks to provide equitable wages in a systematic manner to ensure fairness and sustainability for the town budget. The Board will reconvene on Wednesday, Jan. 22nd at 3:30 PM to continue discussions. The Board reviewed and approved several items including: A grant agreement modification to allow for purchase of two portable speed radar signs (25% cost to the Town). We appreciate our Police Chief’s pursuit of grant opportunities! A sheltering agreement with Lakes Region Humane Society for stray animals. The Board discussed multiple topics in other business including: NH regulations for bingo per RSA Chapter 287-E. Planning for the 2024 town report. Town reports will be available the week of March 3rd. A notice will be posted on our website when they are available for pickup! Several facility improvements including a portable wash station for the transfer station and time-based switches to reduce electricity consumption during off hours at the transfer station. Discussions are ongoing. The Board received a preliminary equalization ratio. A study is conducted annually to compare property assessments to market sales.
