It's high time for gardeners out there to get busy. Please come to our gardening event, Thursday, March 20, at 6 PM at the Samuel H. Wentworth Library Meeting Room. John Moulton of Moulton Farms is going to talk about how to make home gardens more climate resilient. It is now possible to grow vegetables that didn't thrive in NH, like sweet potatoes. We have a greater selection of tomato, peppers, eggplants, etc than we did in the past. Fall plantings can be much more exciting as later frost dates become common. And, as always, we will talk about soil. Brought to you by the Friends of the Library. HealthCare Nepal Presentation On Tuesday, April 1, Jack Starmer will bring an update on the work in Nepal. The Friends of the Library would like to invite you to come hear Jack’s presentation at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, at 6 PM. Everest Basecamp is where the seeds were planted for 27 years of work in healthcare and education in Nepal, the poorest country in South Asia where 25% of the population lives below the poverty line. Writes Jack Starmer, “I’m honored to have been invited by the Friends of the Library to present a follow-up to my talk 2 years ago, this time focusing on what led to our work there, with an update on our current activities. Slides, video, and your questions.” Jack's first presentation about this wonderful project in 2021 was one of first post-COVID events. It's high time for an update. Books-Sandwiched-In Attention all readers! Here's the lineup of books for your winter reading. Thank you, book reviewers! The Books Sandwiched In committee hopes you'll enjoy these books, and can join the discussions Mondays at noon in the library Community Room. ~March 24 The best-selling novel JAMES, by Percival Everett, will be the focus of Books Sandwiched In on March 24th. The narrative is both harrowing and ferociously funny. James, the narrator of this brilliant novel, may seem familiar to those who know Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. But this new James is a fully-imagined, majestic human being. Will Speers will review the book and lead the discussion. Please join us for this last book review of the season. Books Sandwiched In is supported by The Friends of the S.H.Wentworth Library. The program meets Mondays at noon in the library Community Room and on Zoom. A Look Back Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). You can read more at https://www.sandwichhistorical.org/miscellany-and-mystery.html. Grab your favorite Irish beverage, settle down in your favorite reading spot, and enjoy! March 30, 1939: ~Whiteface - We still have plenty of snow in the woods and fields. Roads are bare in most places. Sunday the snow seemed to settle and the walls are showing. ~Crows and blue jays are calling, birds are singing their spring songs. We keep a bird feed box the years ‘round and grain on the ground and have different birds come to it. Blue jays 17 counted at one time on the box and ground; jennie wrens, nuthatches woodpeckers, crows, chickadees, sap suckers and several others. A hen hawk came and got grain. A large crane flew over the house. We still have one red squirrel that comes just before a storm. Some of the chickadees will eat out of our hands. ~Several have started tapping their orchards. There doesn’t appear to be any frost in the ground. Nice warm spring-time weather. ~Quimby School Notes - On Thursday evening, the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams motored to Ossipee to play the Ossipee high school teams. The boys and girls put up a great fight but lost. The girls’ score was 33-9 while the boys’ score was 46-9. However Quimby School maintained its good sportsmanship and improved its playing both of which satisfied the school. North Sandwich Friends North Sandwich Friends Meeting invites friends and neighbors to join their weekly Meeting for Worship from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Sunday at the North Sandwich Meetinghouse (354 Quaker Whiteface Rd., N Sandwich, NH 03259). Quakers, or “Friends,” have their roots in 17th century England. We have no explicit creed, nor does Quaker practice reflect a hierarchy among individuals. Believing that there is that of God in every person, Quakers welcome all who seek to join us in common spirit. Friends seek to live lives guided by six “testimonies”: Integrity, Simplicity, Peace, Equality, Community and Stewardship. Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other. In the Round In the Round takes place Sundays at 8:45 – 10:30 am at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road, Sandwich. In the Round, a community discussion group for the past 25 years, meets weekly in Sandwich. The topic is always thought-provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome.
