A Look Back Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Here is an excerpt, which is appropriate since Sandwich had high winds Monday and Tuesday this week! For more, visit sandwichhistorical.org/miscellany-and-mystery.html. ~November 15, 1883: Last Monday night and Tuesday morning we were visited by the most terrific wind for years, doing much damage to buildings and timber. W.M. Weed having nearly half of his fine timber lot at the North blown down, and many other timber lots suffered in the same way. Many buildings were unroofed and barns, sheds blown down. Leander Pierce’s new house is almost a total wreck. Mr. Felch at the West part of town had his barn blown down, killing a cow. J.E. Hilton’s Kelly barn was also blown down, doing much damage to his carts, racks and farming tools housed in it. The large covered bridge in West Ossipee was moved about 18 inches making it impassable for teams. The Summit House at Mount Kearsarge in Conway built some thirty years ago was entirely demolished. About two o’clock Tuesday morning a gust lifted the top of Mr. Locke’s woodshed carrying it against Mr. D.H. Hill’s house with such force as threatened to break in the house and leaving boards ten feet or more in length in a tree there. The noise was terrible and the family were much frightened.
