Sandwich Events Calendar

This Week, April 30 ~ May 6

In response to the Coronavirus pandemic, most events and group activities have been canceled. If you are unsure, give a call.  A list of Town, business and organizations' responses to the current situation can be found on the new page called Sandwich Responds. Some of the events that are now taking place online are listed there. And there is more information on the page called Food & Supplies.

Diane Johnson writes: April has been a very long month with lots of adjustments and uncertainty. We have all been doing our best to follow advice and to make adjustments in our daily lives to keep COVID 19 away. After six weeks of social distancing, working online, and staying home except for the rare brief trip for essential purposes, we were all hoping that come May life would return to a more "normal" rhythm. Sadly, this virus will be with us quite a bit longer and precautions will continue for an unknown period of time.

Anyone planning any type of gathering, especially a large one, has some tough decisions to make for the health and well being of all. As many of you have already heard, the 2020 Sandwich Fair has been cancelled. The decision, though wise, was certainly very difficult. Spring and summer events, camps, trips and plans are in limbo. The realization that social distancing will very likely be with us into the fall is distressing and depressing. The ripple effects are far-reaching. So many people and businesses here depend on a good summer and fall to financially and emotionally carry them through the winter.

Worry won't help so we will carry on and do our best to take care of ourselves and others. This week Google and read or listen the Prayer of St. Francis. Keep making a positive difference and keep looking for the good.

This website has a tab called Sandwich Responds which has information about local businesses and the response they and the town are making in this most uncertain time. And there is more information on the page called Food & Supplies. This website also has contact information for member businesses so you can contact them with any questions.

If you cannot find the information  you need, you may call or text me (Diane Johnson) at 603-284-7168 or email me at sandwichnews@hotmail.com. I may not immediately have the answer; but I can often steer you towards a person or place that will.

Folks in Sandwich—like people most everywhere—will find creative ways to take care of each other and we will get through this time of uncertainty. For children, parents, and grandparents this may be especially challenging because routines of school, work and physical interactions have changed so dramatically.  May you and your family be well.

This calendar usually updates on Thursday morning. A special thank-you to Diane Johnson whose work is the basis of this Events Calendar. If there is something you think should be listed, please email your information to Diane Johnson, unless it's happening right away, in which case email Janina Lamb. The best laid plans of mice and men do change sometimes; so if you're coming from a distance, it's a good idea to call ahead.

For a compendium of current items of interest for Sandwich residents and visitors, please visit This, That & the Other.

Grateful thanks to Allan DiBiase, Jude Davis, and others, whose photographs illuminate this website with the beauty of Sandwich.

In the Round is meeting via ZOOM
In the Round is a Sunday morning discussion group that regularly meets at the Benz Center (community center) on Heard Road (off of Grove Street) each week from 8:45am-10:00am. The topic changes each week as suggested by a member of the assembled group. Topics are as varied as are the opinions and observations voiced. Most of the discussions are exploratory in nature, and are respectful of others in the group. The numbers in the group vary from week to week depending on people's personal schedules, and fluctuates between six and fifteen. They  welcome all interested comers with expertise or questions.

In the Round is meeting via ZOOM.  Information on joining us on Sunday morning at 8:45 am will be added.

Community Church of Sandwich
For the next several weeks, the church buildings will be closed to the public due to concerns over COVID19. However, the church is made up of people who need worship and prayer.  Staying at home, treating this as a time of Sabbath and caring for and checking on your neighbors may be the most faithful choice, and one that very well might save lives.  I hope we all consider this loving response, as we prepare our hearts for the generosity and our minds for creativity that will be needed in the aftermath.

The church is not the building; it is the people, and we are still here for everyone. Please feel free to call the church at 603-284-6151. Worship will be available at the following links:

Books
Peggy Longley, Friends of the Library Book Committee Chair writes: For those who are cleaning out family cabins or just picking a few books from their shelf, we very much appreciate you keeping the Wentworth Library's annual book sale in mind. A 'gentle' reminder that we cannot accept encyclopedias, National Geographics, Reader's Digests, old texts (>er than 15 years old) or moldy or unclean books. They do not sell and we end up paying to have some of them tossed at the dump. Thanks so much to you, our reading community!
