Diane Johnson writes: Winter weather started early for us here in Sandwich. Thus far, it has been snowy (and sometimes rainy) and we have had some uncomfortably cold days. This week it is nice to have some sun and warmer weather to melt a bit of ice and warm up our spirits.

Live Music at the Village Green Café

The Village Green Café will be offering an eclectic collection of acoustic traditional, classical and original music by local performers for background listening generally from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Sundays. We hope to showcase aspiring young soloists and small ensembles looking for performance experience as well as veteran players willing to share their talents. Initial organizer for the effort and occasional performer will be English concertina player, Jim Norman, a long time participant in the New York celtic music and dance scene.  Interested musicians can contact him at jim_norman@Verizon.net or 646-594-9923.

And Newspapers!
The Village Green Café is now carrying newspapers. They will have the Sunday New York Times, The Sunday Boston Globe, and The Sunday Herald. The cafe will also be carrying these daily papers: USA today, NY Times, and the Boston Globe.  More to come. See all news lovers on Sunday! The Cafe is open Monday to Friday 6 am-4 pm and on weekends from 8-4. The cafe is now selling Sandwich Coffee Roasters by the bag for take-out.  Come and support this local business. Ann Richards has continued her fund raising for climate change and has dropped off the latest knitted goods. Come and see her climate babies for sale at the cafe!

Sandwich Town Use Stickers
New Sandwich use stickers for the beaches and transfer station for 2019/2020 are now available in the Selectmen's Office. The orange stickers have expired and need to be updated.

Library Project
The Library Trustees write: You will notice that plastic has been put up behind the circulation desk at the library. It's not that covering books has become secret, or the staff wants to eat their lunch in a private dining room. We're doing restoration work and making the staff work room a little larger and more efficient. The drop ceiling will be removed and a new barrel vaulted ceiling will be installed complimenting the main room of the library. Cabinets and shelving will be made more accessible and convenient and countertop space more prevalent for the many aspects of preparing books and DVDs for our patrons.  Please bear with us as we go through this four to five week construction project.  Samuel H. 200 Years of Tappan Chairs
Adam Nudd-Homeyer writes: Happy New Year, Everyone! And with it, we are excited to announce the beginning of Tappan Chairs' bicentennial celebrations, marking our 200th year of chair-making right here in Sandwich! We have a number of exciting and special things planned for this year, but throughout all of them the core theme is that this year is as much a celebration of the support that so many people in town have given the business over its centuries, keeping it alive and nurturing its growth. And as part of this, this is our time to return the favor however we can...

In keeping with that we have two announcements to kick things off, right from the start! 1) In celebrating and symbolizing the "History, Heritage, and Future" of our business in our community, and those stakeholders who have kept it going and we hope will help keep it going for many more generations, we will be donating 10% of every retail sale this year to a fund to be split between three of our local non-profits...the Sandwich Children's Center, Sandwich Home Industries, and Sandwich Historical Society! 2) The "quick telling" of our seven-generation tale of makers gives short shrift to many critical, skilled, and hugely important participants in the business over its lifetime, who themselves have spent time as employees, project collaborators, or helpful Samaritans! In preparation for a larger publication and exhibit this year, we would invite any and all who have tales of their work with the business to write us, tell us your story and memories, and share photos if you have them! There is a bigger story to tell here, and this is the year to tell it!

Finally, there is much more to come...there are a number of other ideas we have for this year, not the least of which are other giving programs for some of our other wonderful non-profits is town. If you have ideas, send them our way, as well! Happy New Year, and here's to 2019! Adam

Camp Hale News
Jerrell Cox writes: Hi Friends and Neighbors, Happy New year to you from everyone at Camp Hale!  I am happy to share that phase 1 renovations are progressing at camp and we are on track to finish this phase of the project for the start of the 2019 season. Last year, we welcomed our first campers from Sandwich and we hope to serve more local children in 2019. If you know of a family that could benefit from Camp Hale, please send them my way. And lastly, thank you to the many Sandwich folks who are supporting Camp Hale as volunteers and donors, and helping us build solid local partnerships. If you would like to get involved, or if you have any questions, please be in touch. Get Your Coffee and Newspapers
The Village Green Cafe is now carrying newspapers.  They will have the Sunday New York Times, The Sunday Boston Globe, and The Sunday Herald. Nordic Ski Trails Open
The Nordic ski trails in the center are open for use, starting at Quimby Field. I would like to request some consideration when using these trails. You are all more than welcome, and encouraged, to use the trails at any point.  This trail system is also used by the Inter-Lakes Nordic ski team on several afternoons a week. It is possible the trails will be busy on a weekday afternoon, but by no means closed, during these practices.

I would like to ask anyone who uses the trails for non-skiing purposes to respect that these are first and foremost groomed trails for skiers.  If you feel this is the best place to take a stroll, whether alone, in a group, or with a dog, please keep your foot traffic to the edge of the groomed area.  Footprints through the groomed area can severely and dangerously impact the terrain for the skiers.  Please keep foot traffic to the outermost portion of the groomed area.  If you do take your dog, please pick up their poop.  Not doing so is unacceptable anywhere and our groomed Nordic ski trails are no exception. I appreciate your cooperation and look forward to seeing you out on the trails! If you have any questions, program or event ideas, or would like to volunteer please contact me. Zoning Ordinance Changes Proposed
The Sandwich Planning Board has proposed five amendments to the Sandwich Zoning Ordinance for presentation on the 2019 Town Warrant. These include substantial changes to the Town’s camping ordinance, Article VII. Copies of the proposed changes are available at Town Hall, on the Town website, and at the Samuel Wentworth Library.

Art Gallery for Sale!
In late 2004, we were told that Surroundings was shutting down because Jessie and Steve Barrett were moving out of state.  Wendy and I decided to make a big change in our lives and bought the gallery which we have operated since 2005. While we are not moving from the area, our current needs and priorities are putting us in a similar situation. We would love to talk with anybody interested in carrying on the tradition of fine art that Surroundings has offered over almost 40 years.  If nobody is found, our intention is to close the gallery in 2019.  You can call us at 603-476-5942 or email off board to dsutton68@gmail.com to discuss.  Please pass this information along to somebody you know who may be interested. Thanks for your support over the past 14 years. Don & Wendy Sutton

Those who visit Sandwich, NH, often find themselves planning to return. Some even return here to live. What makes Sandwich such a prized destination? An invigorating atmosphere, friendly people and quiet streets. Clear waters and scenic views in the White Mountains. Plenty to see and do embedded in the vibrant spirit of an historic New England town. I am grateful to be part of this exceptional community.
