Cold nights and a bright moon welcome the new year in Sandwich. Atop the layer of ice, nearly daily dustings of snow glow white as the moon traverses the frigid night sky. Put on your ice spikes while you feed and water the animals! Then try out your snow shoes and explore ‘the colder countries round the door,’ in the words of Robert Louis Stevenson.

Here are some fun and interesting events coming up in the next few weeks around Sandwich. You can read more about them below.

Jan. 8 – International Night Dinner at Benz Center
Jan. 12 – Books Sandwiched In at Library

Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods is open to cross country skiers and snowshoers from dawn to dusk every day. Trails are usually groomed so come make your way through the sparkling sanctuary forest. Glide out into the bright sunshine of the fields that overlook Teacup Lake and take in the view. Bundle up the family and the dogs and hit the trails! Note, River Trail is Snowshoe Only.  Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods located at 740 Mt. Israel Road in lovely Sandwich, New Hampshire. Spend the whole day or just a couple of hours at CSVW. Trails are open every day from dawn until dusk free of charge with plenty of parking. Please sign in at the VISITOR’S KIOSK where you will find trail maps and other information. Enjoy!

Sandwich Ski Trail System

A note from Ole Anderson, director of Sandwich Parks and Recreation: The Nordic ski trails in the center are open for use. We want to thank the Sandwich Fair Association for their support for these trails.  There are some bare spots, and lots of icy spots.  I would like to request some considerations when using these trails.  You are all more than welcome, and encouraged, to use the trails at any point.  This trail system is used by SCS Nordic program 1:15-2:20 on Tuesdays, the Sandwich Parks and Rec Nordic Program on Saturday’s, and also used by the Inter-Lakes Nordic ski team on several afternoons a week. It is possible the trails will be busy on a weekday afternoon, but by no means closed, during these Inter-Lakes practices.
The trails will be Closed for ski races on Wed 1/7 from 9:00-6pm  (make-up closure date Thurs 1/8).  Closed also Mon 2/16 All Day for Middle School Championship Race
I would like to ask anyone who uses the trails for non-skiing purposes to respect that these are first and foremost groomed trails for skiers.  If you feel this is the best place to take a stroll, whether alone, in a group, or with a dog, please keep your foot traffic to the edge of the groomed area.  Footprints through the groomed area can severely and dangerously impact the terrain for the skiers.  Please keep foot traffic to the outermost portion of the groomed area.  These trails are not for sledding, please do not sled or allow your children to sled on the trails.  If you do take your dog, please pick up their poop.  Not doing so is unacceptable anywhere and our groomed Nordic ski trails are no exception.  Porta-Potties are not trash cans, if you wouldn’t put it in your toilet, don’t put it in porta-potty.
I appreciate your cooperation and look forward to seeing you out on the trails!  Many thanks to Steve Olafsen for trail grooming assistance!
If you have any questions, program or event ideas, or would like to volunteer please contact Ole at [email protected].

A Look Back

Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944).  Relax in your favorite reading spot and enjoy reading a few minutes of Sandwich history. You can read more at sandwichhistorical.org/miscellany-and-mystery.html.
January 10, 1884:
~Last Thursday night, Chas. Sanborn lost one of his span of white horses, supposed to have been caused by slipping on the ice and wrenching it.
~At Geo. A. Robinson’s, out of a family of seven, there are four cases of Diphtheria, one of Mumps and one of Pneumonia.
~This weather seems to be bad for freezing ears, especially Sunday evenings. We would advise some of our storekeepers to lay in a stock of ear protectors.
~From Letter #13 – On the northern declivity of White Ledge (Diamond Ledge – SHS ed.) which slopes away to the Bearcamp Valley and the base of Mount Israel, winds an ancient road, once a common highway, but now, and for many years past, almost deserted. (This would be Dale Road today - SHS ed.) On this road is an ancient dwelling house, on which the hand of time has fallen heavily, and though built originally after the usual manner of farm houses of a century ago, yet neglect and desertion give to it the particular impress of antiquity. This house is the birth place of John Colby. The storms howl in at the open doors; the full moon looking over the summit of Mount Israel shines through the “rents of ruin” and only dreariness and desolation look from its lonely chambers. It has been abandoned for many years. (John Colby, although unschooled, went on to show a vast intellect and became a noted preacher and minister in the Sandwich area.) He died in 1817 at age thirty years, having pressed into his short life the work of a century.  (Later in the Letter) Many years ago there was an exhibition of wild animals in Sandwich, and Stickney, a somewhat eccentric man whom many will remember, and Cyrus Beede were standing together as the animals went past; when one, a formidable animal, perhaps the wild Urus, attracted their attention. After looking steadily for a few moments Stickney spoke “See! Uncle Cyrus! Don’t he look like the very Satan!” Cyrus replied “Thee doubtless can judge about that much better than I.”

Ungrazed grass and clover wait for them, still green beneath the icy crust, just a few hoof scrapes and nose nuzzles away. The astral deer nibble their frozen salads and sit beneath Ursa Major.” You can find more of Richard’s writing at somethingwildfarm.com/blog. Something Wild is located in North Sandwich.

Master Plan Writers Wanted

From the Sandwich Master Plan Committee:
Sandwich stepped up in a big way for the Master Plan survey. We received 695 responses, an exceptional level of participation for a town our size. This gives us a strong foundation of community input. Now we move into the next phase: turning that input into well-organized sections of the updated Master Plan.
The Master Plan Committee is looking for volunteer writers and contributors to help develop these chapters. This is, at its core, a writing project — but you do not need to be a professional writer to participate. We welcome residents from all backgrounds who can help summarize information, organize ideas, and clearly communicate what the community has said.
What Volunteers Will Do
·       Draft one section or chapter of the Master Plan (topics assigned with your input).
·       Use the relevant SurveyMonkey results provided.
·       Identify additional data your section may need; the Committee will help locate it.
·       Follow a shared structure and schedule so sections are consistent.
·       Collaborate with our editor for guidance and refinement.
Helpful Qualifications
·       Ability to write clearly and concisely.
·       Comfort organizing information or working from data summaries.
·       Good follow-through on timelines.
·       Interest in local issues, even if you’re not an expert.
·       Willingness to revise your draft based on editor and Committee feedback.
·       A collaborative spirit and appreciation for Sandwich’s long-term planning needs.
What You Don’t Need
·       Professional writing or planning experience.
·       Technical expertise in your topic area.
·       Prior knowledge of the full Master Plan structure — it will evolve.
If you’re interested or have questions, please email [email protected]  with a brief note about your background and topic areas you might feel comfortable exploring.

North Sandwich Friends Meeting invites friends and neighbors to join their weekly Meeting for Worship from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Sunday at the North Sandwich Meetinghouse (354 Quaker Whiteface Rd., N Sandwich, NH 03259).
Meeting for Worship is a time of quiet listening to the inner voice of spirit, God, the Light within –whatever term one uses—in community with others. We sit largely in silence for an hour; friends who are deeply moved to share an insight may rise and do so. Most Sundays, a very brief reading is offered reflecting Quaker values or history, which may provide a common focus for reflection. After the meeting, friends share individual reflections and announcements with each other.
