Under the light of the bright, “Hunter” supermoon, a large black bear makes his rounds at Sandwich backyard chicken coops. Chicken owners, including myself at Chestnut Meadow Farm, grieve the loss of our birds and in my case, our egg business, as we decide how to proceed. What can be done? Electric fence helps, but not entirely. How do we balance living at the edge of wilderness, and the desire for local agriculture in our community? A hearty discussion among friends and neighbors ensues, some in favor of controlled hunting and some in favor of the bears. This discourse, though heated at times, is still more ‘bearable’ than the political disputes that also arise in Sandwich during this season. Here’s a few of the fun and interesting events coming up in the next couple weeks in and around Sandwich: (you can read more about them below!) October 24 – Fair program at Library October 24 – Paint Night at Sandwich Home Industries October 25 – Doug Hazard at Cornerhouse October 26 – Autumn Wreath Craft at Library October 26 – NH House Candidate at Benz Center October 27 – Shakespeare on Tap at Cornerhouse October 27 – Pumpkin Wall October 31-Nov. 1 – Mosaic Glass Class, Field Fine Art October 31 – Trick-or-treating in the village November 2 – Wildlife Sanctuary annual meeting Fair Skillet and Keg Toss Results Two fun events at the Sandwich Fair, are the Skillet Toss and the Keg Toss. Here are the results as shared by event chairmen Trecia, Jeff, Shannon, John Ty, and DeNae. As most, we were concerned the weather forecast for Monday would impact the number of entries for the Skillet and Keg Toss. While the entries were almost exactly half the record we set last year of 127 Skillet Toss participants, we still had a hearty crowd! For the Skillet Toss we had many women from right here in Sandwich, the surrounding towns and as far away as Denver CO. But the Grand Champion toss of 52 feet 1 inch belonged to Martha Dennerly of Northfield. Her winning toss in her class, prior to the championship round, measured a monster 53 feet 10 inches! The Keg Toss saw 38 participants this year with the winning toss of 33 feet 4 inches being thrown by Fisher Bourbeau of Danbury. Fisher is a super nice guy that just happens to be a 4 time Grand Champion. But he enters a new class next year so the competition is on! The crowd cheered on locals Ross Offinger and Dick Breed who won their respective classes and we hope to see them back for what will be the 10th annual Keg Toss competition! Please plan to grab a friend and join us again next year for good-natured fun and a little friendly competition! Samuel H. Thank you for supporting this program. As we get ready to fire up our woodstoves for the coming season, here are a couple of reminders about Woodshare protocols: You must have a voucher to take firewood from our storage depot at the transfer station. We lost a lot of our inventory last season to folks who took wood without documentation. Although Woodshare clients aren't means-tested, the program is primarily designed to fill supply gaps for those folks who may fall short of the resources needed to keep warm. We're an all-volunteer working group that relies on wood donations to fuel our operation and we're not set up to give firewood away to those who can normally afford to buy their own. If you need wood, stop by the town hall and ask for a voucher. Please keep in mind that we rely on wood donations (log length, rounds or split wood) to maintain our inventory. Kindly contact the Woodshare Coordinator if you'd like to drop off wood at our depot. If you don't have the means to deliver your wood donation to our depot, please contact us for a pick-up. That said, we're all set on wood supplies for the coming season. Let us know if you'd like to join the list of volunteers who help process and/or deliver firewood. We can always use more hands! Right now we're in search of folks who can lend us a log splitter for our upcoming fall work sessions..... And a word about pallets: You don't need permission to drop off - or pick up - any pallets stored at our depot. For drop-offs, the pallets should be in perfect shape (no missing parts or rotten wood). Sandwich Transfer Station 2023-2024 facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station (and swimming facilities). Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box. Transfer Station use is strictly prohibited for vehicles without stickers/passes (even for longtime residents!).
