Sandwich Home Industries Artist Lecture Sandwich Home Industries is pleased to kick off its 2025 Winter Artist Lecture Series, Sunday, January 12, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Benz Center in Center Sandwich. Our first visiting artist is Mary Graham from Center Tuftonboro. Mary has been painting and drawing wild places since their earliest childhood, and she has lived for the past forty years in New Hampshire amid the mountains she loves. Born and raised in New York City, she attended the Tisch School of the Arts and NYU and earned a living as a stage and customer designer and scenic artist for ballet, opera, regional theatre, and Broadway shows. Mary’s paintings are primarily concerned with light and atmosphere, influenced by the aesthetics of the American tonalists and the mountains and rivers tradition of ancient Chinese poets. A long attraction to Japanese woodblock prints led Mary to a workshop with Matt Brown of Lyme, NH. Matt is a juried League of New Hampshire Craftsman known for his woodblock prints of New Hampshire Scenes. Mary fell in love with the craftsmanship and handprinted qualities of this technique. Her prints complement her painting practice, drawing inspiration from the same subject matter yet demanding a unique perspective and approach. May will share her story, history, and process and have examples of her paintings and woodblock prints to see and purchase. We hope you will join us for this interesting and informative lecture. Grab a warm drink, settle down in your favorite reading spot and enjoy! For more, visit https://www.sandwichhistorical.org/miscellany-and-mystery.html January 9, 1896: ~Asahel Wallace, one of our large and successful farmers is quite ill, and now confined to his room. Last Sunday, ten of his eleven children visited him at the old homestead, and greatly delighted the father’s heart. That the father, mother and eleven children, the youngest fourteen years old, should all be living is something remarkable. Waxing Moon Gardens As the shift to longer days begins we can’t help but start to think about all the beautiful summer abundance from the garden. Daydreaming of what could be in the summer sun helps warm us by the fire while we plan for the year ahead. Last year it really felt like the gardens came into fruition. While there is still time before everything starts to come into full maturity we started to get drips of what will be. The asparagus gave us barely enough to share for a couple of farmers markets. In our hedgerows between garden plots the apple trees and rhubarb started to share their sunshine. The abundance of perennials is truly a gift of nature and we’re excited to begin enjoying their fruits. Our CSA is live on our website https://www.waxingmoongardens.com/onlinestore/csa-store. Waxing Moon Gardens is located at 222 Whiteface Intervale, North Sandwich. Sandwich Creamery 2 Maple Ridge Road, Sandwich. Self-serve, locally made ice cream and cheese. As for some of the cheese you will be seeing next year, one has already made a brief appearance, but will now be seen with more consistency: the “Olde English” cheddar. What makes the Olde English so distinct is the fact that we have allowed for a rind to grow. This year we will be moving the Olde English into our older round molds and cloth binding them, closer to the traditional style of its making. This will allow for a richer, more consistent growth of the rind and better flavor. Open from 9 am until 9 pm daily. The trustees had hoped to share better news; however, the steeple had to be taken down this fall due to extensive rot in the support timbers and in the base of the steeple just above the bell. It was deemed a serious safety issue and immediate removal was recommended. The base of the steeple has been capped and secured for winter/spring to protect it from further damage. The problem had developed over a long period of time with no visible evidence of any deterioration in the support timbers until we started our preservation and restoration project on that section of the steeple this past spring. It was a blessing our contractor, Tony Hibbard (New England Church Restorations) made the discovery before serious damage occurred. Rest assured; our steeple will be restored to its former grace next year. We will continue to keep you posted on our progress. At present, the trustees are developing a fundraising plan for this unexpected development in our ongoing Bell Tower Preservation and Restoration Project.
