In the town of Sandwich, June is when the world is vibrant, fresh, and full of life. Robins and sparrows offer their cheerful song from the first light of morning on into the day. Colorful flowers grace summer gardens, and trees stretch their leaf-adorned branches toward the sky, green against blue. The Sandwich Range features a lush carpet in green tones, from the deep, forest green of pines and hemlocks, to the bright near emerald greens of maples and oaks. Sandwich Historical Society This summer’s exhibition at the Sandwich Historical Society is titled, The Photograph and Memory. In the 19th century, the advent of photography had an extraordinary impact on peoples’ ability to create images of friends, family and environments. It was a universally utilized medium for recording history. From daguerreotypes to digital, this summer, the Sandwich Historical Society will be examining the history of photography using examples from our extensive photography collection. The opening day of the exhibit will be June 29, 2024. Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883 – 1944). Below is a sampling. Read more on the Sandwich Historical Society website. June 7, 1934: ~North Sandwich - Two old farmers got together at the store and it was horse and cow. One horse was so good he would run a mowing machine in the winter time. ~The Women’s Club now has five active members who are pool players and are leading the men at times. ~C(harles). R. Fellows is making a visit to the old place on the hill. It is true that he did sell this farm to Miss Benz, but the one thing that he did not sell was the key to the places where valuable relics as arrowheads, spears and tomahawks left buried by the Indians of long ago. There has been much digging of trenches and underground work going on at this place by workmen but not one word can we get from any of the men as to what they may have found in research work. Mr. Fellows is now getting on to 86 years, eats well, drinks well, walks, talks and drives his Ford which is paid for, tells stories that come to him from his long life on the farm. Just what Mr. Fellows will do with this key is not known. Can anyone living gift this secret or will he keep it to himself. Mr. Fellows is not interested in buried cities recovered neither is he interested in finding and digging out any of these things once used by the Indians. He thinks that the best thing to do is to stay away from underground places just as long you can. Local Actor Stars in Barrymore’s Ghost On June 15th, BARRYMORE'S GHOST will make an appearance at The Barnstormers Theatre, 104 Main Street in Tamworth. This performance will benefit Interlakes Community Caregivers, a non-profit that provides transportation and errand services to the elderly and shut-ins in the towns of Sandwich, Center Harbor, Moultonborough, and Meredith. The show provides a funny yet poignant portrait of John Barrymore, the youngest brother of Lionel and Ethel Barrymore. In the early 20th century, John was the most famous of the siblings, becoming a star of Broadway, silent films, and the "talkies." However, his constant drinking and womanizing ultimately caught up with him, and he died of cirrhosis at the age of 60 in 1942. It is a rollicking production, which is entertaining and fascinating. Hank Offinger of Sandwich will be playing the part of John. You can get your tickets at https://barnstormers.showare.com Advice To the Players News Advice to the Players, Sandwich’s own Shakespeare theatre company, wishes to thank everyone who donated during their Bard's Birthday fundraiser.
