The town election sample ballots are out! You can find them at the town website, sandwichnh.org, and click on Departments, then Town Clerk’s Office, and Elections. On March 12, Sandwich residents will have an opportunity to choose school board members, consider the planning board’s proposals for helping with housing issues while keeping the historic charm of the town, and elect various town positions such as moderator, selectmen, and trustees. Now is a great time to familiarize yourself with the ballot before the elections on March 12.

Samuel H. Wentworth Library

If you’re an early bird who likes to get your ‘around town’ visits done before noon, take note: Hours are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 12:00 – 5:30, Thursday and Friday, 10:00 – 5:00, and Saturday 10:00 – 12:30. Did you know you can check out a pass to the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center at the library? The pass provides free admission for four people. You can also get discounted admission to the Currier Art Museum in Manchester with a pass from our library.

Books Sandwiched In
Below find the books and dates as well as reviewers selected for the 2024 season of Books-Sandwiched-In. Books-Sandwiched-In is a program of reviews offered at the library by the Friends of the Library (Samuel H Wentworth Library). It has been offered since some time in the early 1980’s every winter without fail. The committee chooses books and then finds community members willing to do a review and then lead a discussion of the book reviewed. The next Books-Sandwiched-In will be February 26, when Jane Harrington will review Empress of the Nile. You've heard about Cleopatra and Nefertiti. But do you know about the brilliant French archaeologist who saved Egypt's most famous temples from being destroyed? Some called her the Empress of the Nile, and author Lynne Olson tells her story in a fascinating biography. 6. Get warm on a cold February day with a trip down the Nile!

Sandwich Historical Society
A Look Back – Director Jim Mykland has pulled together some interesting entries from the Sandwich Reporter (1883-1944). Grab a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy!
February 1, 1917: The Sandwich Local Telephone Company was formed in a small way about fifteen years ago and now covers Sandwich, the greater part of Moultonboro and part of Tamworth with its lines, 23 in number, and a central office in Center Sandwich where they are connected with the long distance. The line is owned and managed by local people and for fifteen dollars a year (About $384.00 today. SHS ed.) free local service has been furnished to all renting phones. Arrangements have just been made to build a new joint line with the New England Tel. Co. from Moultonboro to Center Sandwich so that the new electric light company operating in Moultonboro can have one side of the highway for those wires soon to run to Center Sandwich where they will be welcomed by all.

International Night Dinners

Advice to the Players Open Mic
Advice to the Players sponsors Open Mic Night the second Tuesday of each month at 7 pm, at the Samuel Wentworth Library, 35 Main Street, Center Sandwich. Next Open Mic is Tuesday March 12. "Whoever you are, no matter how lonely"- we're looking for wordsmiths, song singers, piccolo players, that special little spark in your eyes when you juggle bowling pins and crack nasty your mama jokes. Advice to the Players 2024 Auditions
Sandwich’s own Shakespeare company, Advice to the Players, is holding auditions for their 2024 summer season. Auditions will be on March 24th, 2 – 4 pm at the Sandwich Town Hall Theatre, 8 Maple Street, Sandwich. This audition will focus on casting for our 2024 Season, both our summer season and fall production. Auditions are held in the Town Hall Theater located on the second floor. Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods
Open to the public during daylight hours year round for hiking, bird watching, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There are approximately 10 miles of groomed trails throughout Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods on nearly 200 acres. The White Mountain National Forest abuts CSVW on the north and west.

Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods is open to the public year-round from dawn to dusk free of charge and depends on individual donations and grants for financial support. Located at 740 Mt. Israel Road in Sandwich.

Music Jam
Hello, beginner to intermediate musicians. This is a reminder that we gather every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm at the Sandwich town hall for a free, fun-filled music jam. We play traditional, Celtic, oldtime, folk, and Americana tunes at a slow to moderate tempo. Bring your hobby out and start playing with others! It's fun and inclusive. Right now, we have fiddles, penny whistle, flute, guitars, mandolin, acoustic bass, piano, concertina, and an autoharp!! Sheet music available. Plenty of parking, and an elevator lift if needed. Friends and Fiber
If music isn’t your thing, maybe yarn is! Every Wednesday evening, 6:00 – 8:30 pm, Library Community Room: Friends and Fiber Group: All abilities and ages of fiber enthusiasts (and those wanting to learn or just visit) are welcome to attend. Come with your knitting, crocheting, spinning, felting, rug hooking, embroidery, sewing or other fiber arts-related or hand-held project to work on. There is no charge and the group is casual and welcoming. While there is no formal instruction, if you have a question about your project, there is usually someone in attendance who can provide assistance. Experience is that the group is likely to gather on the off weeks as well as everyone enjoys the company and sharing of ideas. Corner House
The bar addition at the Corner House is well under way, and the upstairs pub renovations are nearing completion. Owner Sam Kachmar writes, “come on down to the Cornerhouse and let us wash away your winter blues with $5 drafts every Sunday from 2 to 5 pm starting Sunday, February 11th. It's the perfect antidote to cabin fever, guaranteed to have you feeling sunnier than a sunflower field in July (minus the pollen, hopefully).”

Foothills Café and Curio
Foothills Café is now open seven days a week.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8am to 3 pm, with lunch being served until 2 pm. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8 am until 9 pm, serving breakfast, lunch, and then dinner. And Sundays, brunch from 10 am – 3 pm, with music from noon to 2:00.

Fairgrounds Nordic Ski Trails
The Sandwich Parks and Recreation Department wishes to thank the Sandwich Fair Association for their support in making the fairgrounds available for the Nordic Ski Trails. The trail system has access points from Quimby Field, the South gate of the Fairgrounds (Squam Lake rd.), and by the main Fair office. The trail system goes throughout the fairgrounds, Fair parking areas, town leech field, and Quimby Field.
The community is encouraged to use the trails. However, this trail system is also used by the Inter-Lakes Nordic ski team on several afternoons a week. It is possible the trails will be busy on a weekday afternoon, but by no means closed, during these practices.
Parks and Rec Director Ole Anderson asks that anyone who uses the trails for non-skiing purposes would respect that these are first and foremost groomed trails for skiers. Please keep your foot traffic to the edge of the groomed area. Footprints through the groomed area can severely and dangerously impact the terrain for the skiers. These trails are not for sledding, please do not sled or allow your children to sled on the trails. If you do take your dog, please pick up their poop. Not doing so is unacceptable anywhere and our groomed Nordic ski trails are no exception.

Rec Department Winter Activities
Please note, Pickleball and all activities in the SCS gym are cancelled during February vacation week, February 24 – March 3.
After vacation week, here are some ideas for getting much needed late-winter exercise: The Sandwich Parks and Rec. Department is bringing back their Senior Striders program. The Sandwich Central School gym will be open Sundays from 2 – 4 pm for indoor walking. This is for folks hoping to stretch their legs and get their steps in on less icy terrain. Doors will be unlocked automatically from 2 until 3:15 pm every Sunday. Please carry in shoes to walk in, and change in hallway, as tracking in snow and ice will make the gum floor very slippery. No ball or other activities allowed at this time; this is for adults only.
The Sandwich Central School gym will be open Saturdays from 1:00 – 3:00 pm for kids in grades 4 – 8 for basketball shoot-around or other gym activities.
Adult pickup basketball takes place on Mondays and Thursdays at 6:00 pm in the Sandwich Central School Gym. Indoor Pickleball meets at Sandwich Central School Gym on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings 5 – 7 pm.

Tamworth Community Food Center Welcomes You

The primary goal of the Tamworth Community Food Center is addressing hunger for those in need, serving the communities of Tamworth and Sandwich, NH. We are dedicated to providing fresh and nutritious food to people and families who may go without it. Sandwich Wood-share
Sandwich Woodshare is a grass-roots, all-volunteer program to procure firewood and distribute it to local residents who would otherwise be cold. This project is not intended to meet all of its clients’ heating requirements, but rather to serve as a stop-gap measure to cover urgent needs between fuel deliveries.

Historic Barn Easement Tax Incentive
Sandwich has the distinct honor of having more barns per capita in the state's historic preservation program than any other town in NH! Let's continue our lead and protect more of our over 210 ag structures by entering them into the program described below.
The Town of Sandwich is now accepting applications for qualified agricultural structures under the state's Discretionary Barn Preservation Easement Program. Also known as RSA-79d, the state law provides for up to 75% tax reduction for the barn portion of one's property assessment for ten years in exchange for the owner's agreement to maintain the structure in its historic form.
One beneficial feature of this easement is that the assessed value of the structure is fixed for the entire 10-year period. To qualify for the easement, the structure must be at least 75 years of age and viewable from a public road or waterway. The application process is quick and easy.

USDA Forest Service Ash Insecticide Comment Period
The White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) will begin a 30-day comment period for the Forest-Wide Ash Insecticide Injections in New Hampshire and Maine projects on Thursday, February 8, 2024. The Forest-Wide Ash Insecticide Injections in New Hampshire and Maine projects are located in ash stands across the forest (please see map on the project websites) in New Hampshire and Maine. The Forest Service is emphasizing electronic correspondence throughout this project. Please submit your comments through the online comment form accessed by clicking on "Comment on Project" on the right-hand side of each project website. Comments must be received by March 8, 2024.

Selectmen’s Update
It has been a busy few weeks for the Selectmen and Selectmen’s Office. Thank you to all who attended last week’s budget and loan hearings as well as those who attended this week’s Selectmen’s meeting. We appreciate the work of this year’s Budget Advisory Committee meeting, employees and members of the public who have contributed greatly to another successful budget season.
The Selectmen spent most of the work session this week discussing follow up to last week’s hearings, discussing correspondence and reviewing/completing the town’s governance questionnaire as part of its annual financial audit practice. “Audit season” (internal work with our auditors) typically occurs in early-mid February with formal financial statements completed and available to the public in late summer.
In the regular meeting, the Board acknowledged receipt of the 2023 Equalization Study. The town’s annual equalization study is used to assess real estate sales in comparison to property assessments. The town’s 2024 equalization ratio was 54.8% (for sales occurring between October 2022-September 2023); this is the lowest the ratio has been in at least 30 years. As a reminder, the Town will undergo a complete revaluation in 2024.
The Board reviewed the 2024 Town Warrant and voted on warrant article recommendations. Per RSA 32:5, particular warrant articles require a vote by the Board of Selectmen.
The Board accepted unanticipated revenue from the White Sylvania Trust. The Board greatly appreciates the White Sylvania Trust’s continued support of several town departments/initiatives. The Town is so fortunate to have access to such resources!
The Board is anticipating a higher than usual turnout at Town Meeting on March 16th (Sandwich Central School, 10 AM). We encourage folks to carpool and those who can walk a further distance for parking to do so by utilizing our public parking downtown (Baptist Meetinghouse parking lot, Town Hall, Frost Lot, Quimby Field parking lot, etc.). Lastly, the Board approved appointment of Tod Campbell to the Energy Committee. We appreciate our volunteers and encourage all residents to consider participation on a town board/committee (or multiple!).
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 26th.

Town Hiring Camp Assistant Director
The Town of Sandwich will be posting an employment opportunity in the coming weeks for the 5 Days of Sandwich Assistant Director position. The Assistant Director assists in planning and implementing the 5 Days of Sandwich day camp program. The program serves children ages 7-13+ and runs for three weeks, Monday-Friday in July. Anyone interested in learning more is encouraged to reach out to the Selectmen's Office with questions. 2023-2024 facility stickers are required for use of the Transfer Station (and swimming facilities). Stickers are available for purchase at Town Hall, by mail or by drop box. Transfer Station use is strictly prohibited for vehicles without stickers/passes (even for longtime residents!).
Sandwich Transfer Station hours are Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. Please arrive at the Transfer Station at least 15 minutes before closing to allow for unloading and closure for the day. Kevin and John appreciate being able to close on time. Reminder: if you are recycling larger cardboard, please be sure it is cut to a maximum size of 4' x 4'. Larger pieces jam up our compactors!

Harvest Church of the Lakes Region
Harvest Church invites you to join them at 80 Bean Road in Moultonborough, Sundays at 10:00 am for contemporary worship and Biblical teaching. Harvest’s mission is to Love God, Love Others, and Go into All the World. Harvest Church has several meetings during the week as well: a men’s Bible Study on Mondays in Sandwich, a women’s Bible Study on Monday mornings in Moultonborough, and a home church meeting on Wednesdays in Sandwich. In the Round
In the Round, a community discussion group for the past 24 years, meets weekly in Sandwich. Meetings are Sunday, in person at the Benz Center, 18 Heard Road. Doors open at 8:30, discussion begins at 8:45. The discussion generally runs until 10am, or a bit longer. The topic is always thought provoking and related to what people are thinking about these days. In the Round welcomes all points of view, reasonably and respectfully considered. Anyone who wishes to join in that spirit of dialog is invited. Various viewpoints are welcomed. Everyone is welcome.

North Sandwich Friends (Quaker) Meeting
North Sandwich Friends Meeting is open for in-person worship every Sunday from 10 – 11 a.m. in the 1881 historic Meeting House. The Meeting House is located at 354 Quaker Whiteface Road in North Sandwich, just north of the Durgin covered bridge.
